The search button is your friend. There's been a lot of speculation, and threads, about this.

You do realise that CCP *do* have an eye on the future? They couldn't use the carbon engine because the PS3 specs are too **** for it. It's doubtful that they'll switch to it, though, the dev team will have had a huge amount of experience with Unreal by then. More likely that they'll switch onto the Unreal 4.

By the way, if you'd actually followed any threads recently, you'll have seen that I've mentioned there were rumors they were developing in Unreal 4 and porting across into Unreal 3...

I'm a PC gamer, so I understand that PC's are inherently better, spec-wise. However, there is that thing that PC devs have to cater to many different brands and architectures of hardware. For example, the difference between 32 and 64 bit architecture. I'm sure you appreciate that. The PS3 has uniform architecture, and hardware, across every single iteration of the console. All the newer models have just made it lighter and less power-hungry. In essence, the developer has much less to consider, which is why consoles are easier to develop for than the PC.

On the other hand, the PC will always dominate in the enthusiast part of the gaming market, especially because building your own custom machine holds a great deal of appeal for a lot of people.

 Carbon's the in-house CCP-developed engine. Looks smexy.

However, it was too hardware-intensive for PS3, so that was scrapped.

Sparadok, the PS4 won't be backwards compatible. Can't play PS3 or PS2 games on it. Link

PS4 has about 2 TFLOPs of processing power as opposed to 400 on the PS3. Might be able to run on the carbon engine, but I'd imagine a lot of development time would have to go in to make it similar to the DUST we're playing. Not in the flaws, I mean the actual game.
