In a couple conquest battles Subdreddit has fought the other team not only reached their side of the facility before we got to the SI, but they actually got to *our* side of it. We were using speed fits, and couldn't figure out how they were so much faster without using LAVs or dropships.
Then I remembered something. All through beta one of our members always loaded into a match from the barge far faster than we did, which was because he had a solid state drive. An extra 10 seconds of running with a speed fit would be enough on a cargo hub SI to reach the facility and lock it down with uplinks everywhere before the team not using solid state drives can do anything.
This should be investigated more. I don't think it's right that you can get an advantage by buying extra hardware, any more than by using a modded controller. Would it be possible to have conquest battles start with a delay before spawn points are active, so that everyone spawns at the same time? |

Totally agree. Is not the very reason 99% of shooters have a "Game starts in 30 seconds" counter at the start? Can we get something like that? |

I agree, I think the playing field should definitely be level in that regard - it's a very unfair advantage to have. |

All the textures stream from the HD since the PS3 doesn't have enough memory to preload the map and assets. So naturally an SSD is faster.
I've also read that the PS3 only supports SATA 1 - 1.5gbs transfer rate. No point getting a fancy 3gb/6gb one.
I recently got a brand new 12gb PS3 model. It doesn't completely eliminate FPS issues (PC has its own problems as well atm) but it does run decently better and load faster. |

If this is really the case, this needs to be looked into.
As most of the other posters have said, this is why many games have a countdown before you can actually fight in a match, and it appears Dust is in need of one as well. |

We have tested this, it most certainly IS the case. SSD gets you spawned in considerably faster than the stock 5400 RPM HDD in the PS3. A 5-10 second headstart is not at all uncommon. |

In this case we definitely need to annoy CCP enough for them to find a way to fix it. |

I got thinking about this more, and the delay is probably more so from the time between spawning in and when you can start to move, from the delay in loading textures / geometry. A delay in spawn point activation probably wouldn't help. It would have to be something like everyone spawns in unable to move until 30 seconds has passed. |

I bought a PS3 to play Dust for $90 which was having some "hard drive problems". I was able to get it working with just a good cleaning and it lasted about 45 days. Now the hard drive just crapped out today and I'm going to slap a SSD or hybrid in it. Heading to the store now... |

Yeah this is why all shooters have a countdown during the phase where the map is actually loading up. Fix this, CCP. |

I am 99% sure that this is the case. The people I've played with that have these solid state drives (a modded PS3 just as much as a modded controller is, IMO) always get a headstart on those of us without them.
Spawning to the MCC first off, with the doors opening at the same time would be ideal. From that point on it can run as normal, even though it WOULD mean that those with modded gear are getting a bit of an advantage. |

I'm curious what the performance is like on their end. Latency wouldn't be an issue with LAN-based testing, but the basic hardware and framerate issues should be exactly the same, right?
It's unlikely anyone in a dev-house would use an SSD for something as iterative as build testing because of the absurd number of writes you'd get on the drive (I would think).
So, the setup is similar. Why wouldn't they have already seen these performance issues? |

So, the setup is similar. Why wouldn't they have already seen these performance issues? But then again, that may be a problem as well. If newer tech comes out (in this case SSDs and being able to put them in your PS3), people changing their hard drives will naturally see a speed increase. However, on CCP's end, they will never see this in internal testing with in-house PS3's because they don't have SSD's.
In any case, the only real advantage that I have seen so far with SSD's in Dust is basically loading textures faster. The biggest time this becomes an issue is at the start of the game, but as for any other time in battle, it's not giving a considerable advantage from what I can tell from gameplay videos. |

That also works if you use a modded HDD which is ways cheaper. A 30 seconds timer is really needed here. To make it more realistic everyone could just start on the MCCs and after 30 seconds the doors could open. So they cannot leave earlier. |
