The Eryx is definately better than the Python as far as usability is concerned, but it handles like a pig. I put a Jovian prop mod on to improve handling, but it's still a real slow moving bus. You just don't have the time to get out of dodge once you start taking hits most of the time, and that's even if you run the moment you notice the first shot. An afterburner is a requirement, but then that requires a high slot which reduces your passive defense.
I've been playing around in Domination with an Eryx equiped with the top of the line active scanner, two Azeotropic Shield extenders, one Light Clarity Ward Shield booster in the highs, and a Jovian prop mod and a Local Power Diagnostics mod in the lows.
I hover over the objective, activate the scanner, and wait for gunners to spawn. It worked out well on the open city map the one time I got it, but that may have been due to our team stomping the other. Skim Junction was more challenging due to having to hover inside the tall walls. The slow accelleration of the Eryx even with the Jovian mod meant that somone with a FG had a good chance of taking me out before I could escape. Swarms weren't so much of a threat if it was one player, but if two or three got into the act I didn't get away.
I suppose I could have increased my survivability by hovering at the height of the city walls, but then the scanner would have been usesless due to its radial nature. Gunners are also more accurate if you get them closer to their targets, and the low level hover let me position accurately over the objective for spawners to jump out.
The one time I tried it out on Line Harvest I was nearly taken out by a FG on the table top before I could do anything. I ran and recalled it.
Overall, I think that was the most effective use of a DS as far as helping my team goes. Providing a spawn point, gun platform, and enemy position report all in one package is about as logistical as you can get.
The problem is it wasn't practical given the losses I suffered, up to two ships in a match at times. I could have increased my survivability if I swapped out the scanner for an AB, but then I lose one third of utility of the ship.
Has anyone else played around with fits in Domination? |

And I've gotten burned badly with some useless bluedots in an eryx, idiot gunners shot a blaster installation and that thing ripped through me. Have to recommend putting joves on a ADS though, makes the python go so fast. And I might spec into LLAV's after the respec, give myself a cheaper way of helping my team than flying a pi+Ķata.
Yeah, blue dot gunners are "hit or miss". I try to never expose myself to enemy turrets with a blue dot in my ship just for that reason. My main purpose of bringing the Eryx was to have a mobile spawn point directly over the objective but it wasn't taken advantage of nearly as often as I would have hoped. I blame the cluster spawn mechanism because people probably want to spawn with the blob for saftey.
I'll try the Joves on the ADS while I still have it. I loved the agile responsiveness of Precursor and that might just duplicate it. |
