Quote: Why does EVE even have daily downtime?
Tranquility is one of the largest single-sharded Massively Multiplayer Online Games in operation. The database it runs on is 1.5 Terabytes and in order to maintain the core systems of the game, we perform daily cleanups during these downtimes. Most of these cleanups are "under the hood" kind of operations which are not noticed by the users but are needed to maintain good health of the database.
In addition to database cleanup some essential operations are also performed during downtime such as asteroid reseeding, outpost building, NPC standing updates, etc.
Lastly, during downtimes, the load balancer is also updated and fleet fight systems made dedicated (remember to use our Fleet Fight Notification form if you are having a fleetfight!).
These operations can take a long time to complete but we have been taking steps to reduce them. Today the majority of the downtime involves shutting down and starting up the cluster.

It's the one time during the 24 hours that CCP let's the hamsters rest.
Though ever since they followed the player's wishes reducing DT from almost an hour down to about 15 minutes the rate at which these poor creatures die has skyrocketed. |

They aren't making near the money that a bad FTP game does on iOS or Facebook so any tears are only in comparison to that level of income. Which they do not have and most assuredly want. |

as someone who studies game design as a hobby i have to say that this game most asuradly isnt designed to make money, no part of it seeks to earn money above all else and they have been very very reserved in how they have used aurum.
some sort of income generation system is nessesary for the game to survive and by keeping that aspect reserved they must aslo keep their dev pool quite small in compairison to a large developer.
these guys are absolutly passionate about th enew eden universe, and if eve is any example they have a vision and seek to make the game as close to it as they possably can. if your finding the game unsatisfactory its because the vision for the game that they have istnt he same as the one you have for it.
this game is awesome, sure its not a perfect representation of the vision yet, and sure not everything promised is in the game. but thats a result of them keeping a small dev pool and keeping costs low so that they can keep the aurum transactions to a completly minimal level.
every design they have made has been for a reason, and not all of them have produced the desired effects but when thats the case they change them. usually if someone is crying about something being OP or about some aspect of the game they think is unfair its because they arnt using the games resources to fix their own problem, or they just want to be an unstoppable one man army.

They create new alts to troll us. All the good trolls are employees. They have contests on how fast they can get banned banned by their fellow workers and how much rage they can induce into the forums. After that they sit around and laugh while posting extended downtimes. Finally, they wipe the tears from their eyes with $100 bills and figure out ways to open beers without using their feet because they need their hands to program a game that they know is broken and doomed. |

Every downtime is caused by a hamster trying to escape and CCP has to spent half an hour trying to find it and bring it back to work so that our servers can continue functioning. |
