Sounds like you're incredibly naive. nVidia sponsors games (The way it's meant to be played) and gets the game optimized for their hardware, meaning that ATI/AMD lose out on performance on those games. The opposite is also true. This is a not-so-subtle form of espionage, albeit legal.
IGN and Gamestop have been accused of hyping games before they were released, of being paid reviewers for godawful games. It's rife in the gaming industry, and doesn't need to be done by a gaming website, it can be done for very little expenses, considering that making an account on any gaming website is free, and commenting is also free, meaning you can discourage any new players coming to the game for very little expense, and little to no risk of being caught. |

Yes, it happens. However, no one really bases how to spend their money on a metacritic rating. The reasons most people look at reviews are as follows:
To get an in-depth, "honest" look at game mechanics and features
For real gameplay videos, to get a feel for the graphics
To understand the sort of target audience the game is aimed at
I didn't buy Skyrim, Borderlands, etc based off its metacritic score, and to date, I still haven't played Portal. In the gaming community, the best seller is word-of-mouth. If your friends are playing it, you'll likely play it too, and if you see that people enjoy playing the game, you will at least give it a try.
Most marketing and PR companies understand this, which is why industrial espionage in this manner is a very distinct possibility, but has also been recorded as happening. |
