I haven't played a whole lot of fps games but those I have played were quite different from what I've experienced here.
The TTK in other games I've played was much... MUCH higher allowing people time to respond to being fired on and actually aim and such.
With this game though the aiming and movement is just so twitchy I can't understand how people are aiming so well and especially how they always seem to be scoring head shots that take me down in half a second.
I've even started using a mouse to try improving my control but at every range still I'm being instantly zeroed in on by people and mowed down. I can't figure how people are able to lock on so well at long and close range and land their hits in such succession while I'm left spraying bullets into the air around them. |

I feel for you Mike, I too struggle to hit the side of a barn door at times. Its all about practice I guess. The key for me is staying with squads and working as a team = longer TTL
I still love the game even though I am pretty much garbage at it right now. |

Well, there seems to be some control and aiming issues, so once those are ironed out, that should make aiming easier. As for how others are able to headshot you instantly, it's a matter of practice and muscle memory. One other thing to consider is that your opponents may be using higher grade weapons and mods, so that could be another reason why you're getting taken down quickly.
What this means for you is that you should keep at it. You might be getting slaughtered now, but over time your reflexes will improve, and you'll also have better weapons and dropsuits to help keep you alive longer and kill others quicker.
Just out of sheer curiosity, what are some of the FPSs you have played in the past? |

It really isn't that twitchy in Dust, and frankly the controls just suck. I've played tons of shooters over the years and the aiming (and moving in space, for that matter) just isn't that precise.
What I've found, mid-range engagements on opponents I get the drop on are the best: even a militia rifle can make short work of almost anyone in that case. Side-arm for good measure as you continue to advance while pumping them full of lead. |

I'm with OP on this one. I started playing FPS with Halo 2 and sucked horribly at them. Have been playing lots of FPS games since (some on PC, but the tactics and responses are mostly the same, just less precise) and have greatly improved at them. In Borderlands 2, probably my main FPS, I'm actually pretty freaking good.
I can pop headshots at range like nobody's business and give you a facefull of buckshot as well.
But in DUST, something just feels horribly "off". I attribute PART of this to the fact that I'm using starter equipment (getting SP up takes some serious effort). I have noticed improvements in my gameplay over the past 2 weeks that I really "Started" playing. But there are some situations where I just have to look at the TV, throw my hands up, and ask, "Really?! Really, now?!"
If I'm hacking something, and someone rushes up behind me totally concealed from my radar, and shoots me in the back, I can't even turn around to pretend I felt the shot. Heck I can barely even take a step to the left or right. There will be times where I'm in a brief firefight (I'm talking >2sec exchange of bullets) and I'll notice my armor is now at like 13%. That quickly?! Are these assault suits made out of paper or WHAT?
I think overall the game needs a better balance between weapon damage and suit HP. We don't have to talk huge changes here, small changes can go a loooong way.
One gripe I have as well is with the aiming system. I had to turn my sensitivity really low because the controls are too twitchy while shooting from the hip. But as soon as I'm zoomed in it's like my gun is suddenly a sniper at 10x scope or something? It'd take me over 2 minutes to do a full circle while aiming down the gun, I swear.
I don't like that at all. |

it really is just a matter of familiarity with the game's controls and such. the best thing for it is too tinker with the sensitivity until it feels smooth. moving while your hacking will keep you alive either to jump off (literally) and engage or finish the hack. |

learning that all the settings for kb/m, controller, and move all affect each other. Adjust the settings on all, try to narrow things down. This shouldn't need to be done in a fps, but at least with alot of trial and error Ive gotten my mouse movement distance to equate equally to my crosshair movement make sense to me. |

When CCP released this build, there was a bug which made the KB/M control terrible. I believe they have been releasing small patches to fix it, but the total fix will probably be on the 14th.

With this game though the aiming and movement is just so twitchy I can't understand how people are aiming so well and especially how they always seem to be scoring head shots that take me down in half a second. The TTK in this game is longer than most decent FPS games. The movement is also clunkier, and is also slow. Controls are not as responsive as they need to be. Part of this is the low FPS. I usually get between 15 to 20 FPS, and many other FPS games, especially on PC, hit 40 to 60.

The information below is probably outdated on weapons, since all of them have changed, but you should be able to get the general idea of things, and pull out some useful information from them. This thread may help you.
This thread is about mice. It may be useful too.
Unfortunately, the game is in flux right now, so you're not going to get a good feel for anything before CCP changes it. I suggest practicing for maybe an hour or two when you can, then go and play alts or something. PSN accounts are free, and each can have an alt who gets passive SP. They will let you test things out so you do not have to waste all of your main's SP.
When this build came out, CCP removed a number of items and gave the players the ISK value of them. Many of the high SP characters who could spec into proto got hundreds of millions of ISK, and a few were refunded over one billion ISK. The combination of SP available for proto gear and the ISK to support losing it over many games means that you probably cannot run the starter fits well anymore. Sadly, if you skill into anything, you will probably regret it on the 14th if CCP does not refund everyone's SP.
No one can give you a good answer or direct path about how to get better. Right now, the TAC AR is the only AR that CCP did not make unusable, so everyone is using it. It used to be unusable last build, but CCP tuned down the kick, as it was far too high. Someone at CCP decided to make the Caldari Logistics suit the best or second best suit in the game, and it is perfect if you would like to use a tac AR. If you have the SP to get proto cal logi and proto tac AR, you can have fun killing people for two days. CCP has a way of making weapons unusable if they think they are too good. They essentially remove them from the game, but you can still look at them or poke them on the market if you want to.
edit: strafe while you aim and shoot if you are not already. |

It's really just a matter of the game. Each game i going to play out daifferant. I carry lot of habits from my other games. I just tarted up with this so I still have to get myself wireded the right way to play. I wouldn't put too much worry into it yet. Wait till the 14th and see what happens the production version rolls out. They could have a few fixes for that. Plus gear always plays a factor too. |

Cover is a given but I think avoiding hip fire is part of my problem.
Zooming to aim has always been second nature for me but targets here tend to be way more spastic and random in their movement. Zooming slows down your aim speed and for me at least multiplies the difficulty of hitting a target that's strafing back and forth.
I started relying more on hip fire unless a target is at the limit of my range and I've had some success. |

Hey OP...
I read your post yesterday prior to playing the game and was very curious about how the game would play out.
Here's my finding after like 4 matches...
Controls are stiff... they aren't fluid. After looking at the maps, I decided I would try sniping first... and wow... what a grind it is to snipe lol...
I ONLY play FPS... Started with Wolfenstein back on my pentium 1 and now playing this... I've seen and played it all...
When I was aiming with the sniper rifle, it's not fluid. I would have my sights down and if the guy was just left/right of my crosshair and I slightly twitch to get on target, it would move past him.... couldn't get a perfect line up on nothing....
So I switched to an assault rifle... I must say it plays like most FPS'... it's good. recoil feels familiar, aiming feels familiar, and handling feels familiar. Only thing is that maybe the muzzle flash is a little harsh... it kind of blinds the screen a bit.
The other thing is I can't figure out if I like the graphics or not.... The terrain feels nice, but the enemy is kind of hard to see... it's almost like there's too much on the screen at any given time and it takes away from how fluid the game is... also the characters on screen I feel move too fast... it's hard to stay on target...
I think practice will get me there... I was doing alright by the last game...
If you are new to FPS' though... it may be tough... |

This might sound dumb but
There are skills to improve aiming and the sway of scoping as well as the setting the sensitivity settings.
I have yet had much issue aiming with my controler more so with a sniper or turret. Of course i also wait a lil and aim slightly before an enemy as they move.
And i'm not that fps savvy I mostly played hao 1 2 3 bioshock 1 2. I mostly try to aim for the head, my only issue is running and shooting due to the movements though.
I hope this info helps ^_^

gotta really fiddle with the sensitivity, at 50% it was waaaaaay to low and at 100% it's waaaaay to high (do 4 360 spins at the slightest flinch lol). |

Sniper rifles are way off at the moment from my experience. They used to be much, much better. Seems likes it's mainly a rendering issue at it seems to be the enemy that's stuttering not the rifle.
