Exactly what title says. How many of the FPS players still here? And before mmo players start throwing "cod" around.. pause for a bit.
COD IS NOT THE GAME THAT DEFINES YOU AS A CORE FPS. EVERY FPS PLAYER KNOWS THAT. A lot fps here came from socom, mag, planet side 2, tribes, even BF. (not 3)
This game has become a break for me from my FPS. I can slow down here. When the next great FPS comes out, I'll probably leave to conquer, and then return. Rinse and repeat.

I pretty much only played Madden and Call of Duty extensively before I started playing Dust. I was into the whole Madden competitive scene from Madden 08 to Madden 10, then made the switch to Call of Duty. Spending over $100 a year for the same stuff over and over got old quick, so I gave Dust another shot after not giving it a chance in closed beta. |

This game isn't an FPS. Its an RPG, FPS requires human input to get a kill, this game uses a poorly programmed skill tree that determines damage, health, range, speed, and accuracy. All we do is aim and fire, the computer determines the battle. If you have higher skill points invested you win.
FPS, if your reflexes are better and you can maintain control you win. |

Been playing FPS since Doom95 and still regularly play Quake II Arena and SOCOM with friends. The current changes actually want me to stay more than ever. Most of us FPS OGs that have grown up with the best of the best the FPS genre had to offer have been watching the casual decline in quality of games over the decades. Everything has gone into more of a twitch direction thanks to CoD and Battlefield. Personally, I still like the original Halo over the crap that's been coming out now that Bungee isn't at the helm. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to play MAG at the height of its popularity, but from what friends and corp mates have told me, I would have loved it. Dust 514 is different, very different from most of the current gen FPS. But in a breath of fresh air good way and the less twitch more strafe elements compiled with stats being more important in Uprisng makes me want to stay more. There's a steep learning curve and element of challenge between SP skill and player skill that makes it shine over the rest. Engagements aren't just determined by who can left click or press R1 the fastest, but who can maintain their aim and track their target the most. This new direction taken in Uprising has exposed a lot of twitch players for having a weak gun game. They've been spoiled by casual FPS for so long that they don't know how to recover and just quit. In a way, Dust 514 has raised the bar for what an FPS should be like while throwing in character building and customization to fit ones playstyle. Twitchers can fit themselves to gank and those with better gun game can fit to tank. So in a way it's more balanced to different skillets for different type of FPS players while bringing in the MMORPG crowd who are better stat mongers. I've been here and I'm going to continue to be here and I hope many of you do the same. Dust 514 has a lot of potential and we need more variety in the FPS genra than what Activision spits out every year. |

Oh sure, so your technical ability (ability provided solely by a technological advantage) to turn around faster than that of a person using a DS3 gives you more "skill". Give me a break. Skill is the ability to excel within certain parameters. So you can't turn as fast as you used to? Boo frickity hoo. Show me you're still an "awesome player" when you can only turn at the same rate as someone with a DS3. That's skill. |

Your giving yourself away buddy by saying "casual" and socom in same paragraph. EVERY FPS has some twitch action to it. tho others more then most. It's called "thinking on the fly" or "quick reaction". Those are skills. Its the reason why protos that were never great fps players go down against advance suits like me. Cause we are able to do those "COOL MOVES" that bring in the wins. How would you feel if the flood gates got opened and MANY OF THE CORE FPS PLAYERS THAT OPENED THE DUST BETA AND HAD SP COOKING CAME BACK WITH ADVANCE SUITS? That's what many casual fps and mmo lovers don't want. cause to them, this is there FPS. EVEN IF BY FPS STANDARDS ITS CRAPPY. |

Dust brings different skillets on an equal battlefield. It's called balancing or skill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EitZRLt2G3w Your gun game was still able to outclass that proto even though he had superior tech. But if he was better fitted to specifically counter your fitting, he might have won instead. On that same token, if you had full proto and him advanced, but he was fitted to exploit your fitting's weakness, he still has a chance to win the engagement. There's a lot of counter play and meta game in Dust. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRBcjsOt0_g

What is a 'core' fps? I played Doom, Ken's Labyrinth, Wolfenstein (not RTCW), Quake, when they were new. These were some of the earlier FPS'. Does that make me a core fps player? These games like socom, mag, planetside 2, tribes, BF....these are all late-comers! But even Doom, et al, were not the earliest.
So you say every FPS "knows that". But, I really don't know what a core FPS player is, and whether or not playing COD makes you one. |

How cant you consider Cod in this at all???? COD 4 set the standard that other FPS games have been trying to emulate since it was made. What was before Cod 4?? Halo? Starwars battlefront?? Shooters didn't get big until after Cod 4 was made, and just because activision spammed the hell out the series doesn't change that.
That being said though..... I don't know how you define somebody as a "core shooter" anyway. What does that even mean? lol This thread doesn't make any sense at all when you think about it. |
