The amount of arrogance and epeen through not even 3 pages of this topic is staggering. It's no wonder why FPS players have such a bad rap among the gaming community overall. We all like the same type of game, but if you prefer CoD over BF, or DUST over Halo, or X over Y, someone will cuss you out or tear you down over it and say you're not a "true" FPS player.
A "Real" or "Core" FPS? Are you kidding me?
Guess what? ANY multi-player game in which you have a first person view and shoot various types of projectile weapons is a "true" FPS. It doesn't matter if it has RPG mechanics like Dust or even Borderlands.
In Madden, every character has stats that determine how fast he'll run/whatever. These stats have an impact on the game and force the players of the game to adjust their strategies and tactics accordingly That doesn't make Madden any less of a "true" football simulation game. (The same goes for any modern sports game).
The opposite is also true. Just because Fallout 3 has a first person view (with guns) does not make it any less of an RPG.
Case in point: RPG elements (Stats and skill progressions) do NOT determine the game genre. DUST has RPG elements in it, these elements have a drastic impact on who has an advantage in certain situations on the battlefield. None of these elements make DUST any less of a FPS.
If you don't like DUST, it's because you don't like the TYPE of FPS that it is (Which is fine, everyone has opinions). But don't put yourself on a pedestal and say you dislike it because it isn't a "true" or "Core" shooter. That's just pure arrogance. |

Nothing like having someone read only the first three lines of your post and only respond to that without reading the rest. *sigh*
Seriously, anyone who says "all FPS after certain game Y are utter easy ****." are completely missing the point. Are FPS games easier to get into today? A lot easier? Of course, it's called good game design! (Someone already posted the link to "Extra Credits: Balancing for Skill. Watch that if you still don't understand)
A game Genre is determined by the Mechanics of the game. Not the difficulty, not the skill level required to play at a high level, not if it has RPG elements, etc.
The people who make the games realize that easier to pick up and play = more $$$. Games that are easy to pick up and play without getting crushed in your first 3 games = even more $$$. And most game designers and ALL publishers (hint hint especially Activision, EA, and Microsoft) LOVE more money. It's not rocket science. But if the main mechanic is pointing a gun and shooting at someone from first person view... then it is a 'true" FPS. That's all it takes.
To say that people who started with CoD, MW, BLOPS, BF3, or Bc2 would get crushed in games that came before is stupid. Umm, of course they would get crushed! They've learned the basics of the genre by playing an easier game. Congratz 15-20 year FPS veteran! Want a cookie? Glad you had the determination to learn FPS mechanincs in harder games. Glad that experience gives you an advantage over the average player of today. That still doesn't make those earlier games any more of a "true" FPS then any other. It just makes them require more skill to play at a high level.
Fighting games are the same way. People who got into the genre during the arcade years typically have a lot more skill and experience than those who first started playing with Street fighter 4 on a console. The vets don't complain that SF4 is a lot easier to pick up and play for casuals than those earlier games (which it is). They don't claim to be "True" or "core" FG players. They say they are "Vets" and that's it.
Why is the FPS community so different? Why all the epeen from learning to play the genre at a high level from harder games? None of the other major game genre communities seem to have such an arrogance about them (to the extent that so many FPS players do). And this is why FPS players have a bad rap. That and the Tea bagging. |
