Seriously, take a page from Skyrim. In Skyrim, you could be a Two Hand Broadsword Healer, or a Heavy Armor Pickpocket, or a Fast Talking Necromancer Alchemist. Or all of the above with enough time and training. No classes. Build your own experience, do what you want.
I think DUST would benefit from that mentality. Let us tinker with our own dropsuits, not try and fit into bucketed classes.
Keep the three frames: Light, Medium, Heavy. Keep the four racials: A, C, G, M. That's 12 suits total.
Give each suit it's own specific CPU, it's own specific PG, a specific bonus for Frame, and a specific bonus for Race.
Heavies only can wield heavy equip plus a sidearm, decrease to speed and stealth. Medium gets a light and a sidearm, base speed base stealth. Light frame get a light weapon only but increase to speed and stealth. Like it is now, you MUST equip a gun in order for the suit to be valid.
Then let us go nuts. As long as we come in below the CPU/PG, let us equip whatever we want.
5 different grenades but no equip? Sure. 4 different equipment pieces but no grenades or sidearm? Sure. 7 shield extenders and no low slots? Sure. 7 kinetic catalyzers and no high slots? Sure.
If the modules, weapons, and equipment were balanced with each other, this level of control would not break the game. It would make it more fun. Pick out 200 lego bricks, and build whatever, but it needs to be 200 max. Everyone will make something different with the same pieces. We would get more classes than CCP could ever hope to program. And they could focus on new maps, and new game modes to challenge our builds, instead of new exciting classes that will just be used counter to indication (looking at you, Logissaults). |

So are you saying do away with the slot layout? I agree every race should have every type of suit but I don't agree with letting you put on 7 shield extenders. |

Solid ideas, just not for this game. |

I like the idea but you have to remember that skyrim isn't a competitive game. I feel like smart people could make game breakingly good builds and this would ultimately and counterintuitively destroy the diversity of the game. |

OP I really like your idea but what you are proposing should be reserved for tech 3 dropsuits.
Give us the option for something like this but make the ISK cost and SP requirements huge.

Yeah I agree with everyone else, the divided slot layout allows for a little more diversity in gameplay. If you did away with slot layout, people would theorycraft the 'best' build and you would end up with about 2-3 different cookie cutter builds and calling it a day.
Its not a bad idea, but its not gonna happen here. |

i agree practically its not likely to happen, unless there is a huge swell in the player base. But the slot layouts as they exist are broken for several classes. And CCP will never stop rebalancing them, because no matter what they INTENDED for the Caldari Logi to be, players turned it into something completely different. What are they supposed to do about it now? Nerf and deal with the backlash? Keep handing out respecs? Let it be and have half the game spec CA Logi for the obvious advantage?
Mark my words, its going to be the same with Commandos. 4 different suits that can equip 2 light weapons each? One of them is going to be too strong right out of the gate.
So unless they are planning to discourage using Logi suits for non-medic roles somehow, they could just let us build our own medics and our own assaults and our own hybrids. |

I actually like this take on it. Completely adaptable suits, after 20mil or 30mil investment of SP. Tech 1 and Tech 2 suits are factory standard, let newbros learn different layouts through practice.
I'm just personally irked at the whole second respec in 2 weeks thing. This wouldnt need to happen if balance were the onus of the players and not broken builds. |

Not generally applicable in multiplayer. Issue is too many things to balance, if some combination has even a 5% edge that will be jumped on.
In FFXI they had a main job sub job system. You could be a level 60 Warrior with all the abilities of a level 30 ninja or black mage, or etc.
However as you played n higher level groups (pretty much any groups) you'd get passed over if you didn't have the right subjob (probably 2 acceptable out of possible 12 or so? been a while).
In the same way in WoW with some or other update reduced skill options because many people weren't bothering with them in the builds. Also same thing with them removing the weaponry skill. People will niche into what works the best, guides will be built, 90% of players will stick to the guides, and then the variety is just illusionary |

I was thinking about something along these lines, too. Like every tier of suit gets X number of slots that can be distributed by the player as highs, lows, or equipment. The problem is that not all slot types are created equal and we'd just end up seeing a lot of very similar builds.
It sure would have been easier for CCP to balance, though. They've got their work cut out for 'em. |

IT would be great to build our own crap... but no for this game. There needs to be control for now. In the future when New Eden can build and sell our equipment we will see some great new things I imagine.
Look to the future, you may see more of what you want there. |

There is a weapon coming out tomorrow that slays shields. There is a grenade called a flux that also whips out shields. Pick one then pick your other weapon to take out armor.
Problem solved. |
