Basically, the loading screens when you start up the game, when you're deploying for a battle and (I think) the end of match battle report are all displayed in fullscreen. However, while you're in the mercenary quarters, the war barge and during a battle, the game has these black borders on the top and bottom of the screen which are highly distracting.
You can see it in Jenza's video here from fanfest.
The thing is, there's other DUST footage of the Uprising build that doesn't have these black bars on the top and bottom of the screen right here. You can tell it doesn't have the black bars because the little camera 'brackets' in the corners just about touch the black bars in Jenza's video, but they're more centered in the B-roll footage.
If it's not a bug than can you please tell us why it was done? I personally would like to see a fullscreen over sharper textures and such. The only way to fix it is to switch your tv to a 16:10 aspect ratio, which cuts off the sides of the screen, which is obviously not ideal, from a player perspective and that fact the you have stuff being rendered that doesn't get seen. |

The alternative is to render low and scale it up to 720p, which is definitely what was going on in Chromosome.
But like I linked above, there's a video of Uprising that doesn't have these black bars yet still seems to run as smooth as the Uprising we have. |

You can easily see the difference here, on the left is Uprising without any black borders and on the right is Uprising with black borders. If you look closely, all of the HUD is in line between both images, so there's no distortion or scale issues. |

They could have been playing on dev units or on a different build where FPS wasn't as much of an issue.
True, but as tribal wyvern was saying, if they just appeared during a battle that's surely a glitch? Also why go to fullscreen at the end of the match while it has the battlefield rendered? I mean sure that part doesn't need good performance, but it seems a bit inconsistent for the black bars to appear and reappear.
To be honest all I want to know is if it's intentional or not, I'm hoping CCP could say for sure. |

Hah well that explains why it looked more prominent on my monitor. I hope you guys are able to reduce them in the future, they're quite distracting. Of course performance is king, but I'd prefer a fullscreen view and less jaggies over nicer textures and effects, though I remember how the post fanfest build was and Uprising is a phenomenal improvement.
Anyway one thing that still puzzles me is this:
CCP Photon wrote:Currently, our rendeirng pipeline is set up to always render the black bars in 3D scenes and so they should always be present in any 3D scene.
The black bars definitely disappear when you get the win/lose end of match battlefield overview, the part where the camera either shows the MCC blow up or just shows a snapshot of the battlefield, which is a 3D scene.
