Basically, the loading screens when you start up the game, when you're deploying for a battle and (I think) the end of match battle report are all displayed in fullscreen. However, while you're in the mercenary quarters, the war barge and during a battle, the game has these black borders on the top and bottom of the screen which are highly distracting.
You can see it in Jenza's video here from fanfest.
The thing is, there's other DUST footage of the Uprising build that doesn't have these black bars on the top and bottom of the screen right here. You can tell it doesn't have the black bars because the little camera 'brackets' in the corners just about touch the black bars in Jenza's video, but they're more centered in the B-roll footage.
If it's not a bug than can you please tell us why it was done? I personally would like to see a fullscreen over sharper textures and such. The only way to fix it is to switch your tv to a 16:10 aspect ratio, which cuts off the sides of the screen, which is obviously not ideal, from a player perspective and that fact the you have stuff being rendered that doesn't get seen. |

It improves the framerate. Battlefield 3 is another console game that does this.
The alternative is to render low and scale it up to 720p, which is definitely what was going on in Chromosome. |

But like I linked above, there's a video of Uprising that doesn't have these black bars yet still seems to run as smooth as the Uprising we have. |

You can easily see the difference here, on the left is Uprising without any black borders and on the right is Uprising with black borders. If you look closely, all of the HUD is in line between both images, so there's no distortion or scale issues. |

When i downloaded uprising there was no black bars, it was full screen. Then last night while playing.......boom black bars. The screen flickered and the bars just appeared. It is a bug. Codex didnt have them, chromosome didnt have them, the e3 build didn't have them. It has nothing to do with improving frame rate at all. It's a bug |

They could have been playing on dev units or on a different build where FPS wasn't as much of an issue. |

True, but as tribal wyvern was saying, if they just appeared during a battle that's surely a glitch? Also why go to fullscreen at the end of the match while it has the battlefield rendered? I mean sure that part doesn't need good performance, but it seems a bit inconsistent for the black bars to appear and reappear.
To be honest all I want to know is if it's intentional or not, I'm hoping CCP could say for sure. |

This has to be a bug I was playing on a different console with full screen. Swapped consoles and now black bars.
This is both systems hooked to the same TV same HDMI cable and same display settings. This bug just hit me tonight at 9:40 pm est. |

Hey guys.
The black borders are not a bug. As mentioned by JX1, they are a way to improve performance, and allow the game to be rendered at 100% resolution. Before Uprising we were rendering the game at 85% resolution, which made textures and other aspects of the game blurry. The evolution you guys saw with the terrains, is being made on the large, medium and small components (the buildings and other static meshes on the terrains), so please expect flickering and aliased textures getting dramatically improved over the next few months.
Anyways, how much of the black border you see depends heavily on the type of television you are using, due to them having a plastic border that covers a part of the screen and not all TV's are the same. This is why console games, and DVD movies have safe areas for text and other important elements. If you have your PS3 hooked up to a computer monitor, you will see the full size black bars, since those do not have the overlapping borders that the TV's have.
We are constantly improving the rendering engine and over time we will be able to reduce the black borders. For now, we need them.
Hope this clears things up.

Now that is strange. I'll ask CCP Photon to respond (he's our rendering architect).

This is almost certainly going to be down to each person's display settings. HDTVs usually have an 'overscan' function that can come under all sorts of names and will cut off the very edges of content and blow them up slightly to fill the screen. This feature is mainly for TV and doesn't really apply to 1:1 media like consoles, but many of you will have this enabled and not even know it.
I tested the new build with overscan off and it almost, but not quite, covers up the black bars. There's still a tiny bit of black left at the top and bottom of the screen. You're not gaining any extra display information though, just stretching what's already there. |

Hi, I'm CCP Photon - rendering architect on Dust 514.
CCP Praetorian did a very good job describing why we chose to go with the black bars - he also mentioned that we do aim to further increase performance and visual quality, and would also aim to remove or reduce the black bars.
Currently, our rendeirng pipeline is set up to always render the black bars in 3D scenes and so they should always be present in any 3D scene - however, the black bars will be more or less visbile depending on the output resolution and the TV and TV setup.
It's good to get players feedback on the graphical changes we made for the Uprising release, and this feedback has been noted.

Also worth noting, different TVs will respond differently to the "screen size" setting.
If you scale it up, you lose visibility on the edges of the screen, but reduce the black bars. Scale it back and you'll get larger bars, but less peripheral vision.
Either way, I'm not a fan of the FOV reduction for Uprising (probably also a performance issue), but there's already a thread about that. |

Hah well that explains why it looked more prominent on my monitor. I hope you guys are able to reduce them in the future, they're quite distracting. Of course performance is king, but I'd prefer a fullscreen view and less jaggies over nicer textures and effects, though I remember how the post fanfest build was and Uprising is a phenomenal improvement.
Anyway one thing that still puzzles me is this:
CCP Photon wrote:Currently, our rendeirng pipeline is set up to always render the black bars in 3D scenes and so they should always be present in any 3D scene.
The black bars definitely disappear when you get the win/lose end of match battlefield overview, the part where the camera either shows the MCC blow up or just shows a snapshot of the battlefield, which is a 3D scene.
