It's a landmark I feel we all should celebrate considering this game has been out for over a year now.
BTW somebody go check RFoM, SOCOM Confrontation, Socom 4, and MAG to see if they have similar players counts.
We might be able to qualify DUST as a "Dead Game" |

This is a valid metric of success - it's not the only metric, but it is a valid metric, and ofc CCP is keenly aware of this number. I know i've been following this number everyday for a year. This number hasn't really changed in spite of the steadily growing # of created characters, approx. 2.2 million at this point.
My model for what was driving players away in Chromosome was this ranked list, biggest factor first(not 100% sure of the ranking, hopefully peeps can post their versions):
1) Awkward core mechanics and related bugs(Controller response curve, sticky terrain, sprint/lock/hack reset bug, reload animation, HMG barrel wall glitching).
2) Pubstomps(The frustration caused by the pubstomping is amplified with high gain by point # 1 above.).
3) Complexity(Leading to a feeling of paralysis and helplessnes/hopelessness, amplified by points # 1 and 2 above).
4) Graphics/audio(Not an issue for some of us, but more about new peeps expectations based on other titles - first impressions count!).
5) Need to grind. Feels like a job(Put this last because a peep would actually have to stay with the game for awhile to experience it. Compunding this is the toxic passive in-match skillpoint mechanic/AFKers).
I feel that with the release of Uprising, points 1 & 4 have beed addressed to a significant extent(more to do ofc).
Point 3 has also been addressed with the skill tree(works for me, at least). The game is and should be deep and complex, CCP can only do so much for players who refuse to engage on any level with resources availiable to players. New Eden will not be for everbody.
Point 2 is totally under CCP's power to influence. I'd say that if the matchmaking AI needs more time to achieve sentience then impose gear restrictions/sp nerfs/ladder system temporarily until the matchmaker is ready. You'd kinda want this in place by the 14th or by whenever the advertising blitz starts.
Atm Point 5 is entangled with point 2 at an almost quantum level. Noob frustration is amplifired by low player count in matches is driven by AFKing is driven by the passive in-match sp rewards the motivation for which is driven by a natural aversion to unpleasant grinding. I believe the whole motivation for including the passive in-match sp mechanic was to serve the new players, not frustrate them. But it's a complex system, so back to the drawing board. But definitely a soluble problem looking for creative input from us beta testers.
My expectation is because points 1 & 4 have received some love player numbers will start to rise steadily. When points 3 & 5 get the attention they deserve i'd anticipate a fairly impressive adoption rate.
and to get to the OP's point, we'll have 5000 before the 14th easily. |

I would reckon that WHEN DUST hits 10k players, PSN will advertise it on the front page, and it should get a few thousand more players trying it out simply because it's free.
Expect it to expand then through word-of-mouth. |

When I see the number 5,000 it seems like quite a few players. Dust's success or failure will be seen in the long run, does player count increase decrease stay the same.
Also,it is free to play. player count does not mean more money for CCP. but rather how many spend money. some will many won't.

Yeah man. People are somehow off the rails with DUST player counts as though they have any idea of what those numbers mean. Are they massive? No. But for a game with little or no advertizement, and a core, solid playerbase, and incentive to stick around, it aint bad.
COD pulls insane numbers constantly, but most other FPS dont. This isnt EVE, or another MMO where folks sit around chatting and not actively playing. People log onto other MMOs ALL DAY. In an FPS game, you have a lot more people coming in and out. So your active player base is going to be a lot lower than your real total player count.
6K isnt amazing, but its not bad compared to other FPS games, even AAA ones with lots of advertizing. Not to mention, its a console game, not PC. Planetside 2 is down to numbers a little higher than DUST. And its on the PC so bigger install base, had the a pretty big marketing campaign comparitively and is a sequel that already had a core player base. |

1. at one point during it's closed beta... MAG had 77,000 on. that's just a simple comparison. when i did basic math for the blog about planetary, using the numbers from a random server count on BF3 as the time, they had at least 5 digits in server pop and the numbers still would have been small enough to chop up the multiverse without ever having fired a shot. just some baseline stuff. it took mag a long time to get down to the 7k mark and that was the sign it was gasping.
2. i predicted a rise to about 15k with a lull back down to 7 to 5. i was wrong. never got the 15k.
3. consider this:
"Server Population >Filter By> 514 Filter By> EvE"
if there was a filter in place to see ONLY the 514 mercs... uh, well. not sure how that would change things.
but:
they really haven't spent much on promo from what i can tell.
promotion is a lot in the media bidness, sad to say. fancy cut scenes and intense edits won't do the job.
still looking forward to some good solid planetary with the hope that the momentum increases in the next few weeks and the ones who haven't started yet bandwagon it.

You probably won't see a huge influx over the next few weeks. That isn't CCP's way. They prefer slow, steady growth, and I think that's what you're going to see with Dust.
Also, again, for those who care:

Dust will never reach the numbers mag had in it's prime never. Mag was awesome and fun, you also had other things to do besides kill. Mag actually had support roles and was very diverse. My issue with dust is the gameplay mechanics.
Im sitting on $150 us to spend on dust till ccp fixes the dropships, the guns, and gameplay. I love but im not spending my money until these things are fixed. |

My take on the promotion thing is that CCP knows the game is not ready to be promoted, they've released now with the new build because they think it will get them a bump in player numbers, which they need for testing purposes.
I think once they have the core mechanics ironed out(basically aiming, the mesh and actions) plus a little more work put into the new player experience, they'll turn the marketing machine on.
At that point the trickle will turn into a flood. And if they can manage to fix aiming and the mesh early, word of mouth may make their marketing campaign redundant.

I think thats steam where cod isnt really popular to begin with on there. The ps3 gets like 300,000 - 400,000 active players daily . |

Wow, you see in to the future marvelously. What are the winning lottery numbers? Somehow, I think CCP's plans will outsmart the average 5 min analysis by some random internet kid.

Alright, number crunchers and math geniuses let's get real, because when I was reading the opening post it quite honestly amazed me. I was astonished because I realised how little analytical thinking skills some people posses. But, guys, before I get started let me throw out a little fact for you guys out there: Dust 514 has had over 5000 players for a long time already. I mean, my God, we've had over 5000 thousand players playing at the same time! Now if you think all of the game players are playing all the time, which they aren't, I suggest you take a few moments to think this further. Peace out! |

Right now dust effects factional warfare hardcore
also all dust gear is going to be built by eve players and sold on an open market very soon. |
