I know there is a lot of uproar CCP is hearing over the heavy changes. I'm pretty sure the number of things that have been complained are OP, Nerfed, and so different they don't want anymore (supposedly part of the reason for the refund) is pretty much all encompassing.
What I'd hate to see is the heavy turned into a mindless killer. A class where you round a corner, press a button, and call it a day.
Granted I have my own concerns as with some of the wider cooridors for vehicle use I wonder if I may be in positions where I am forced to either cross open terrain a lot or go around (not fun on heavy) do to distances. But we'll see and my concern is partly because so much is up in the air.
What I'd hate to see though is the heavy turn into that killer. I always hate the big guy with the big gun being a big dumb animal. It brings me back to the movies where the guy with the big hammer or something is represented as being overpowered and foolish for relying on his strength, as if that precludes wisdom. Facing off against a monster of a man covered in scars means facing off against someone where each of those scars is a lesson learned.
What I mean by the above is don't let the QQers turn them into that stupid beast. Force us to play smart.
I hate hearing about all this glory hogging. Where everyone thinks they should be Kratos from GOW for whatever reason.
I have no "fond memories" of people I recently chewed up at close range due to bad luck or plotting out where they were going to pop out at when I see them running. I don't have "fond memories" of eatting a proto tryhard with my HMG because I caught him off guard and in the open. I don't even have fond memories of people that repeatedly killed me that I got vengeance on. Despite I think all of these happened this weekend.
I do have fond clear memories of a couple nights ago where I saw a squadmate shotgunner racing towards someone shooting at me. The enemy had good cover and would have lost to me still in a moment but I stuck my face out a bit extra and watched the blue dot move up, the guy disappeared, and my squadmate ran past where he was.
Last night we got hit hard by some competent people running good gear. It was one of those times where your team runs "test" gear to see if it is worth bringing out expensive stuff and an entire team of advanced/proto users come round the corner and your team starts to melt. There was a critical corner where if they shot from there some allies who were gtfoing would be exposed. I knew they would be rounding soon, so I just started opening staggered fire on the corner to slow down the enemy. I would have escaped succesfully afterwards too if I was not using a militia fit (was running behind covers rejoining the masses and took a few stray shots).
A couple weeks ago a heavy got up on the straight pipes and we were entrenched in Bravo. I was at Alpha but I knew I couldn't do enough damage from my distance to kill him and its too easy for them to duck for cover from that position even if I was. But my priority was that I knew he was going to do serious damage before anyone stopped him. So while moving from Alpha to Bravo I opened up fire on his approx. location in hopes that anyone looking my way would see me shooting at him. When I got in distance I was able to keep his head down a bit but he went to look at the other side and I went about other business where I could make more impact. I have no idea if it did anything to help but I didn't see him slaughtering on the killfeed so I like to think that maybe at least it kept people looking up, since he was the first to go up there.
My last and current favorite memory was spawning in the bowl map on standard Ambush. My team pretty much spawned inside the bowl, I had spawned with a type II heavy suit and a standard HMG. For me an MH-82 might reach that other area that everyone knows ends up being where the enemy starts and get some kills but the HMG just dings people if it even reaches. I know from experience that if we push into that spawn and slaughter the enemy that they can easily start spawning on the other side of us and just walk in and take our position (and have seen thoes "deadly assaults" do this multiple times and F the team). So rather than go flank them I just shot people I could dink or danced back and forth on the lip. I would duck down when I lost shields and come up again when I got them back (plenty of people willing to heal me). When they stopped shooting me I started firing fans of bullets into the air wildly hoping someone would take me as stupid prey. I got a few shots but not much interest. Eventually someone with a laser put me down hard and I came back as a logi, put down some hives, and did it again as logi (much more takers for shooting at me). The team won, I had crap kdr and WP but I contributed by giving someone else good WP for healing me and making sure bullets came my way rather than at someone who could nail those SOBs. Next time I hope to time how long I stay exposed for and make a game of it.
Those are the things I love about being a heavy. Keeping people contained, being a big juicy target, and keeping eyes on me.
It looks like I can do these things better with the changes potentially. I'll have to see how the gun impacts things but it helps me do my job and I'll stick with it. I may not get points for what I like to do but I can see the impact on the field when I do it right.
Let the assaults assault, let the sentinels sentinel. |
