They were ungodly OP then, now they are... well, let's just say they are less than they were, just to avoid direct arguments. They HAVE been targeted by a nerf, one which removed the OP unflinching scope on all AR's and added recoil to EVERY AR, something they never had before. And just to kick it when it was down, they took around a 5 point drop in DPR.
Now you might say, "yeah that was just dropping of it's excessive OPness", but that's just it, that is a HUGE nerf. Imagine if ANY weapon got hurt THAT badly by a nerf. Prolly the only thing in this whole game that got hit harder than AR's was prolly the missile turrets.
At the beginning of Chromosome people started speccing into other things because the AR had been hit so hard, and yet AR devotee's adapted to the new specs and overcame them. Once they could use them properly again, we heard the cries of OP ringing through the hills again.
The problem isn't that AR's are OP. The problem is that almost EVERYONE uses them. If everyone used mass drivers as much as they currently use AR's, I guarantee you this would be a "nerf MD's" thread instead of a "nerf AR's" thread. It's not the weapon that is the problem, it's that many AR's plus a few specialized weapons spread in makes a good team.
They are abundant because an AR is easy to pick up when coming off of other FPS games, and the sheer number of noobs coming in and picking it up is amazingly high since there are no starter fits with specialized weapons on them to try out. When I play RPG's, I go with swords first 'cause it's what I'm used to in other games and it's always readily available from the start. When I play FPS, "oh, hey, what kinda AR's do they got for a beginner?".
Rather than nerfing things further, thereby further flattening the game, I think we'd be better served by putting special weapons on all starter fits in order to introduce new players to the game's weapons from the start. A laser on an assault starter, a MD on a logi starter, an HMG on a heavy starter & an AR on a crappy scout suit to deter use ;). Introduce the nu-tu-u weapons to them early on and we'd prolly see more diversity.
Just remember, one weapon may kill you more than any other, but when it's pretty much the only weapon being used, it's kinda hard for it not too.
This!
