I just got ahold of a 60-inch "CinemaVision" tv ( free tv \o/ ) and it can run 1080i. In the patch notes it says we're getting 1080p.
Is my current TV going to be able to run 1080p using a 1080i setup, or should I just kill myself now? Is there really any difference between the two? |

LOL YES!
Just kidding. I dunno. The only thing I care more about refresh rate. Granted, most TVs with a high refresh rate are 1080p anyway. At least, the ones I've seen were like that. |

1080i is interlaced. Most 720p TVs (which are actually 768x1366) support this but you will get a better picture by disabling it and outputting in 720p. |

First off, the patch notes say an increase in resolution. They do not say 1080p.
The general consensus is that the video feed will still be 720p, but that resolutions on textures/rendering planes etc will be improved.
As I understand it the PS3 won't run games in native 1080p, that they're all upscaled. I don't know though.
As to your question, yes there's a big difference between 1080p and 1080i. In most cases, you're better off running 720p than 1080i. 1080i means 1080 rows, but they're interlaced. This means that your video output is actually 540 rows every other frame. They are then run interlaced to give the full 1080 resolution. In doing this though, you will probably see some flickering, and your frame rate might not be as good.
The p in 1080p or 720p means progressive, and this means the entire resolution is rendered each frame. |

Ah, I had just assumed it was 1080p since that seems to be a standard nowadays.
As long as I can stop playing in 480 (TV supports 480 / 1080i), I'll be happy xD |

Was this meant to be English? If so, you fail at it. I don't have time to waste trying to decipher your blather. |

I thought PS3 did not run games at 1080p.
Hell even the PS4 is only supposed to run movies and TV at 1080p...or at least it never said it would support 1080p games...which got the game journalists all worried. |

Ok, so I did waste my time to decipher your blather.
Here's what I found :

Also, I found metal gear solid 4,which is what I assume your list of letters actually refers to. Yeah, bzzt, not only do you fail at English, you fail at knowledge because MGS4 runs at 1024x768 Which is less than 38% of 1080p.

Yup, MGS4 is upscaled. PS3 does not support 1080p. The graphics card would have cost to much to sell the system at a console pricepoint and make a profit ever. |

The old closed beta dust build use to allow me to play dust in 1080p if I unchecked all the other resolutions in my PS3 HDMI settings |
