Let me guess; you started writing the post a few weeks ago, you procrastinated, trying to get something down day after day, then realized they're releasing a build that fixes most of the stuff you complain about so you finally got serious about writing the rest? |

But Battlefield games still have a very great player base. 1943. Anyone play it? ******* fun as hell. Looking for more TEAM BASED. Arma 3. That realistic. TEAM FORTRESS. Not that cartoony. SOCOM, MAG. Planetside 2. Twich skill fps? TRibes, UNREAL. and can go on.. THESE GAMES STILL HAVE AN ACTIVE PLAYER BASE FAR MORE THEN 5 months. With out the "SKILL TREE" of dust. But We won't know off the bat if dust is going to keep its numbers or gain, or lose. not may6 or in two weeks. time will tell. could be it ends up like eve. And thats a good and bad thing. It all depends on advertising (people will play a game if they know it exists beforehand right??? especially if its a free download......). and how streamlined they make it. The thing that'll really make this game last a long time is if CCP can find a way that streamlines the game enough to allow newbies to get in and have fun, while also keeping it deep enough for veterans to keep themselves occupied. All of this WONT be coming tomorrow, BUT I think the build after this one is when the game is going to start looking REALLLLYYY polished. Im almost positive drones will be appearing soon along with dozens of new dropsuits/weapons and vehicles...... the future is only looking brighter and im excited for it Don't forget economy. |

I don't play fps, not a great deal of them anyway. So yeah I came into Dust with little expectations, except I liked the idea of the link between EVE (which I don't play either). The controls are similar to Mass Effect which I love so they've not bothered me. The only real thing that annoys me is the bugs (dropsuits not loading, getting stuck on hills, etc etc.). |

Wrong on all counts I'm afraid.
I started thinking about writing the post a few weeks ago right after my last DUST session when I realised that the "X" factor that it was missing was the ability to keep me addicted to playing for more than three or four rounds on the trot. I then came to work (as I mentioned before I work on a ship) and haven't had time to scratch my behind, far less write long posts about my gaming experiences for over a month. Then, earlier today I got my first half-hour free that I've had in weeks and decided to get it done. I found out about the patch from the replies on this thread.
Sorry.

Those games are examples of failure and what not to do. I would say you need to play more before you will understand how wrong you are here. Not to mention the update will deal with most of this
I'm not entirely sure how you can justify calling one of the highest grossing games franchises ever an example of failure, I'd be the first to admit that CoD is an acquired taste, and kind of like the MacDonalds of the gaming world (everyone knows it's junk and it'll make you fat, but millions of people eat there anyway) but unless you're Bill Gates I'm guessing they make more money than you!
And again, maybe it's a matter of opinion, but BF3 is an extremely well executed FPS game. If BF3 is an example of "failure and what not to do" I would be very interested to hear your examples of success and what TO do, as I have played a LOT of games of all genres and the reason I am happy to use BF3 as an example of "setting the bar" is because for me, in my humble opinion, there aren't many console-based online FPS (yes I know it's also on PC, but we are talking about console games here) that come anywhere near it.
Thanks again for replying.

+1 to the OP for making a great post with very good feedback. Unfortunately its here right before a fairly major build which adresses quite a few of your concerns, but yeah i agree you should stick around its always good to have good sources of feedback that aint pure 100% unrefined whining |

OP, don't fret man.
Your concerns are 100% accurate, and reflect the mindset of the majority of us.
Chromosome is dead and gone, and I never EVER want to go back. EVER. It drove so many of us mad, that some people were even asking for iterations of prior builds which were even worse.
Uprising looks great, and thanks to Kage for sharing it and MMORPGHispano for posting it to youtube.
Either way, stick with Dust, OP. Don't give up on it. You play EVE, and you know how much you enjoy it. I know they will get Dust right. Even if I'm done with medical school by the time they do. lol |

OP your concerns are very valid, but they will always exist as long as you continue to compare Dust to BF3, COD and other well known shooters. Now although Dust may be similar to BF3, we can all agree that it has radical differences from COD. I mean the only thing they seem to share is the fact that you have a weapon in your hand and you kill people with it. How do you even compare these two games. As for BF3, of course its superior, look at how many games there are in the Battlefield franchise, those translate into experience for the devs.
Now you also have to consider the player base. Who does this game appeal to? I don't think it appeals or will ever appeal to the COD fans who are used to relying only on their skills while they run all over their extremely small maps quickscoping everyone without the slightest tactic or strategy. The BF3 audience might find Dust more appealing, still they are the guys who overvalue a game's graphics. In my opinion the people that Dust will lure mostly are those casuals who are interested in the EVE lore and want a deeper experience.
Point is, this game cannot successfully compete with the likes of BF3 and COD. The only chance for it to be successful is to bring something unique to the table and have a different audience. So, since you are used to COD and BF3, try to see Dust from another perspective and maybe you will like it. I know I did. |

Sinned Deluvian you are right in what you are saying, DUST is very far removed from CoD and I should probably have stuck to BF3 when making comparisons to other FPS. CoD is relevant because of its popularity in the genre, and also has some relevance to my comments about graphics and controller layout, but other than that I retract any comparisons to CoD.
The main reason I used BF3 as a reference is because it shares a lot of aspects with DUST, the ability to drive land and airborne vehicles, actual long range sniping as opposed to CoD style quick-scoping, and realistic effective range on weapons. Along with that the graphics in BF3 are a good benchmark to use as they are as good as any other console-based shooter currently on the market, and it also has this elusive X-factor which I keep coming back to which just keeps you hooked into playing for hours on end.
The reason I kept coming back to Battlefield in my original post is because the aspects that the games DO share happen to be the aspects that BF3 got right, and DUST didn't.
Please don't get me wrong, I dont want DUST to be like Battlefield, I appreciate and respect the fact that DUST is it's own game and wouldn't have it any other way, but I think that if (for example) you jump into an armoured jeep in one game, it is only natural that you are going to compare it to your experience driving an armoured jeep in another game. Regardless of whether the games are totally different, that particular action (in this case driving an armoured jeep) is exactly the same.
In my opinion, and again, it's only an opinion, if you want to create something new and groundbreaking, whether it be a computer game, a car, a mobile phone, whatever... you have to look at the aspects that it will share with the leaders of it's type, whether it be technology, styling, user-compatibility etc, and you have to make sure that anything shared is either the same or better than the opposition, THEN you can add your own genius to it in order to make it a better product.
DUST certainly has it's own genius, the skills layout from EvE, the link with the EvE universe, it's all totally new and amazing, but I think what it needed to turn this from a good idea to absolutely the best FPS ever concieved is for CCP to look at what they WILL be sharing with their neighbours in the genre and steal the best of everything. In other words, if you want to make a new car you don't need to start off by working out what shape you want the wheels to be!
I hope this explains a little more where I am coming from. Thanks again for the responses.

Sorry OP but creating a long winded post about why this game isn't as good as other FPS's you're used to is just a waste of everyone's time.
Far too much thought and rose-tinted glasses here.
You should have just said at the end TLDR: Dust isn't as good as I thought it would be because it's too different from other FPS's I play. |
