Just thought I'll share some little tech stuff.

Ever wonder if it's the game lagging or is it your connection, well here's a simple solution to troubleshoot it. Since I'm on Mac I can say exactly how to do it, but Windows peeps gonna have to Google that.

It's just a simple continuous ping test. What is that you ask? Well basically your computer hits a website over and over, performing the ping test, and it tells you if your connection is stable. Stable connection is when your test comes back with no timeouts.

 Looking something like this.

If your connection is crap, then it'll look something like this. Note the timeouts.

On Mac this is how to test it out.

Applications > Utilities > Network Utiity > Ping

Enter whatever website you want, doesn't matter, click the "Send an unlimited amount of pings", hit the "Ping" button and watch the results as they happen.

That's only general quality of your connection. For more specific (and useful) test, we'd have to ping test Dust servers. You might get a great connection to google, for example, but the connection to CCPs server farms might be a different story due to # of hops, routing, physical location, etc.

 Anyone know their IP?

Are you sure? 159.253.143.196 is in the US according to whois.

And only one server farm in EU? I thought they had 2-3: Iceland, UK, Amsterdam.

edit: according to this Tranquility's IP is 87.237.38.200, in the UK.

I pinged 87.237.38.200, and got around 16ms, which is very good for FPS
Above 100 is questionable, anything above 150 is pretty much unplayable.
Too bad there's no ping display in-game so we can't do it there.

Just pointing out where people might wanna troubleshooting first. Don't wanna be on the forums crying about the game is lagging when the problem lies with your own connection.

Yes, it's a good place to start. But if you ping Tranquility you get your answer in one go - whether it's your general connection, or connection to Tranquility itself.

Also you should look at dropped packets - you might have great ping, but if you have dropped packets (ie. data lost in transit) you'll get worse network performance. Windows ping command as described above by Spec Ops Cipher shows dropped packets.

This shows the lag I see is game lag, or alternatively other people have bad connections.

This is a little silly, why you may ask....

You are NOT directly connecting to the CCP/EVE/Dust514 server.

If you want to test your connection speed for the ps3; open up the PS3's crummy browser and go to speakeasy . com as it still works with the ps3.... that will tell you how fast your ps3 connection is to the internet.

Now for the silly part... you are connecting to the PSN and then being forwarded to the appropriate server for the game you are trying to play.

You have no control over the lag.

You can continue to check the basics of your connection by going to speedtest or ping test but that is a general thing only and will only indicate a problem and it is not generally something you can fix without calling up your isp and trouble shooting.

You will likely see many timeouts just running a ping test from your PC or MAC as you are PINGING an address.... the same thing that many hack attempts try looking for a weak network, because you are passing thru some firewalls.

Okay, now add in the fact that CCP is Tweaking the equations for interaction between overseas servers as we get closer to release of the game, and add in the voice servers seperate-ness yet integrated and you commonly see one side of a team as almost un-hit-able; at this point add in a sprinkle of players leaving and new ones maybe taking their place..... what happens to that equation when 3 players join a side and they all have bad internet (2G cell service) with packet loss and pings over 100ms, while on the other sides' team they got 3 players with a tru-Broadband connection no packet loss and pings under 30ms.

Then if you want to get really into it, ask your ISP what spot you are in their HUB? How old is your router and modem?

And to further annoy you.... IPv6 and the end to NAT has been delayed for another year minimum.
