Okay, let's get on with this.
Playing earlier today, no one was in corp, so I decided to spen my time doing something mithradates (did I spell that right?) suggested to me, practice using the 1st person view for dropships for when we get the assault dropship and it's turret and practice tracking targets with it etc etc. While doing this I remembered all that stuff about assault dropships being high speed Low altitude aircraft and the fact that they have less HP than the standard dropship, so I threw together a Viper fit which I though would mimic what the AD's (assault dropship, I'm lazy okay) would be like.
Btw I wasn't at fanfest so I haven't played uprising, so if someone who did try the AD's would give this a go and give me some feedback so I can adjust things, that'd be great.
The 3 variants of the fitting I came up with are as follows
Btw all the mods are militia because this is a training fit that dies easily, cheap is good, you lose less when you crash/dietoenemyfire
Fitting 1- the cheapest and easiest of the fittings 2x nano fibre structure 1 1x militia shield booster 1x militia shield regenerator 1x militia extender 2x militia MT-1 turrets (just use the default ones, BPO=cheaper)
This comes to about 207,000 ISK, and is a good fit, they can easily survive whole matches if you don't mess up.
Fitting 2- same as above but with an active fuel injector instead of an shield regenerator, this is more expensive(bad)
2x nano fibre structure 1 1x militia shield booster 1x active fuel injector 1x militia extender 2x militia MT-1 turrets This comes to around 261,800 ISK, more expensive but let's you get a feel for how afterburners work on the frame (and with your higher base speed, it feels a bit like a pre-nerf afterburner
The 3rd fitting is the most expensive and is the same as the above except it switches the structure 1 mods for M-type ones
2x altered M-type nano fibre 1x militia shield booster 1x active fuel injector 1x militia extender 2x militia MT-1 turrets
This costs about 288,200 ISK and well can be the hardest to fly, really don't recommend you use it till you've tried the above two for a bit.
All the fittings had the same HP 1626 shield 778 (for fittings 1 and 2) and 678 ( for fitting 3)
Well now for the actual to do part.
As I was saying earlier this is an attempt to emulate an aircraft I have never flown and have little knowledge of beyond its description, so how well it compares to the actual aircraft is debatable and can only be answered by someone who has actually flown the AD's. So the reason I made this aircraft was to practice flying very low, and very fast, in the first person view. It has succeeded in performing that role very well, so well actually it provided some of the funnest flying I've ever had in this game.
It's a pretty good trainer for low level flying, but that's only half the training so I started doing strafing runs on enemy targets and doing my best to orbit a target for a short period while keeping it centred in my view, this had variable results. The strafing runs went excellently, seeing how half the times enemies didn't see me coming I was able to make my fake attack run and be gone and on my way out of range before they were able to acquire me (and yes I made some runs on places I knew had enemy AV in them). Orbiting was another matter, the very things which made it so good at low level flying made it an utter ass to keep centred, the viper with chassis mods on has this annoying tendency to skid, you make a turn and the dropship will keep drifting the way you are going and keep trying to roll that way as well, even when you have stopped turning and are now traveling in what is supposed to be a straight line. So orbiting was a mixed bag of "you can do it, but it's a *****".
After that bit of training I decided to push myself and see just how fast, how close, and how tightly I could manoeuvre that ship, I lost a couple to collisions or slight misjudgements due to the field of view 1P offers, but for the most part I did quite well, I tried and did things I would dare to do in other dropships, like squeezing through every confined space I could find, or going as fast as I can, then turn the afterburners on, then fly through the tightest gap I could find. I have to recommend this if you want a stunt/messing around fit.
Anyway I've rambled for a bit and gone off on a bit of a tangent and don't have the time to go through and edit it, so I'll finish with this.
This is a good low level flying/ training fit which I recommend you try out.
See ya |

Okay reading back through this thread I missed a paragraph or two I really should have put down, so here's the correction
From what we know of the AD's it's going to rely on its speed, manoeuvrability, and low level flying/taking advantage of the terrain to survive, this fit was an attempt to emulate those principles, and if you want this fit to last, it has to be used with those principals in mind.
Fly low, I really mean this, fly as low as you can, 1P person is in some ways better for this as it lets you get a better view of how close you are to the ground. Also use the terrain to your advantage, because your hugging the ground use every rise, every dip, every building as cover from AV.
Fly fast, again the whole reason the chassis mods are on it is too try and get an idea of what the AD's speed will be, and too get you used to handling that, in reality I expect the speed and handling to be substantially different between this fit and the AD's, but something is better than nothing,so here we are.
Manoeuvrability, you have it, use it. When your being shot at the chassis mods and general militia-ness of your ship mean you have no ability to tank whatsoever, so use your speed, use your aerial skidyness to your advantage. I have no idea what it must have been like for those people who shot at me, but it must have been damn hard considering how few shots ended up hitting me.
In total I have lost about 10 of the things, 3 to crashes and the 6 to enemy fire, and 1 to an RDV. In nearly all the cases I was shot down, I was either flying straight at, or away from enemy rail guns. Or I was stationary when they shot me. I'm happy to report that I didn't lose a single one to swarm launchers due to the above steps. |

From what I understand we are going to be using 3rd Person view for shooting because gun depression is controlled by the camera stick which doesn't work in the 1st Person view.
You can practice by pasting a reticle in the middle of your screen as that's exactly where it will be in game. Well from the few bits if gameplay I saw, you got the reticule in first person as well, and personally I've never been able to shoot well from third person with aircraft, I've always preferred and been better with first person.
And sorry for rambling and being slightly weird in the OP, I had tea coming up, I needed the toilet, it made me rush a bit. |

Yes you do have the reticle in fpv, but the camera stick doesn't work which means your gun is locked along your spine which forces you to tilt the whole ship to target, and that severely limits your aim. It's exactly like trying to remote rep. You can float directly over your target and get a lock on in 3rd person view but not in first unless you are diving straight down. With gun depression you can get several shots on one target as you make a pass. That would be valuable practice. I see the ADS being most effective when making flanking passes. They won't see you until they get hit and thus won't have time to react with AV. If they are already in a firefight they won't be packing a SL and are less likely to be packing a FG. I'm looking forward to what damage three proto missile turrets can do to the enemy on one pass. Yeah, gonna have to get used too switching between the 2 rapidly, another thing added to my practice list. On another note, I started my practice today with 4 million ISK, I end today with 1.5 million ISK |

Artificer Ghost wrote:How did you replicate the ADS? I'm pretty sure in a DS, you can't switch between 1P and 3P... You can. Just push down on the right stick. And when I say AD's I mean the assault dropship, I think skihids means the same. |

Artificer Ghost wrote:Oh. I thought ADS was the aiming... I played COD:BO on Nintendo DS, and I was pretty sure it said to go into 'ADS Mode' you press the Right trigger, and then I went into zoom mode. :P I'm lazy and I can't be bothered to keep typing out assault dropship, so I just went with the initials instead, saved time and I made the s lowercase to try and prevent your current confusion. |

I'd prolly get lazy too. And feel free to try it out, it's cheap and quite fun, I should go bug bojo about it as well, see what he thinks. |

Well was using the afterburner variant in a match today, and it seems like with afterburners activated its possible to outrun swarms once again. |

Okay, decided to try the afterburner/nano fibre on a myron and I found that 1 M-type nano fibre makes the myron handle like a dream and with the increased speed you can get out of trouble quicker than ever, more than making up for the 300 odd HP I lost to fit this. |

Things go badly if you put chassis mods on gallants dropships, a gorgon will fly like a viper and tank like a baloch. |

In one or both slots, and what did that do to your ability to fit mods without power modules? Low slots are
1 M-type nanofibre Local power diagnostic system
High slots are Active fuel injector Light clarity ward shield booster Aziotropic shield extender Supplemental shield extender
Turrets are 2x proto cycled missiles
Only change I had to make was to switch out a local diagnostic system to fit the m type and switch the 2nd aziotropoc to a supplemental extender. I lost about 400-500 hp total. |
