I've noticed this coming up a lot, and people are not quite on the same page as what CCP has meant when referring to future plans for "Tech 3 weapon customization".
At fanfest, I spoke with Gavin Frankle (CCP Remnant) about this whole concept as well as what the future for weapons in general could hold. I'm not going to discuss all that was said, but I would like to clear this one issue up.
When they say "Tech 3 customization", CCP is simply referring to the modular system that is used in T3 ships in eve, and not alluding to there being "Tech 3" weapons.
Eventually they hope to make weapons much more customizable, and they have several ways that they can do it, but there is and will likely remain a disparity in the concept of Tech-Levels between EVE and DUST.
Maybe it will be something we see in the future, such as in a T2 vehicle or whatnot, but for the most part the Tech level system does not translate well into a FPS game. There will not be T2 or T3 weapons, as far as I understood. |

Well, I'll counter by saying that there almost certainly be tech 2 and tech 3 weapons in Dust. The meta levels all pretty well match Eve straight down the line. |

Meta levels are there to give a sense of linkage between the two games, but even devs have said it dosen't really have a place in dust.

That's pretty much what i got out of the conversation with Remnant, Saber. It's more important to get the core working properly before introducing more complexity.
Who knows, maybe one day weapons won't use PG/CPU from the suit at all, and damage / range modifications will be things that you add directly onto a weapons 'rig' slots instead of your suit, and perhaps there will be multiple modules, like a Magnetic Field Stabilizer will increase a hybrid weapons range and damage, or a gyro-stabilizer will decrease a projectile weapons recoil. Perhaps there will be a whole host of different weapon upgrades designed to modify different aspects of different types of weapons (hybrids, laser, energy, projectile, missile)

OK, I guess if you mean Tech 2 to mean "better than Tech 1" ok. That isn't really how Tech 2 (or 3) really works out in Eve though, especially now.
I interpret Tech 2 to mean a piece of gear that requires lvl 5 skills in a base skill, then lvl 1 in a more specialized skill to be able to wield that gear. In Eve it's spaceships. Specific spaceships, not a class. So, basically, we have officer gear now, which is better than Tech 2 anyway. The big deal with Tech 2 in Eve, is the way Tech 2 items are created. It was just a different resource pool to draw from.
So, I guess I'm agreeing with you now, but am unclear as to what Tech 2 or even Tech 3 would mean in Dust other than meta 5, or modularity.

For those that dont know anything about the T3 ships in EVE. They are split into 3 ship parts which is basically the rear, mid and front part. Each has its own bonuses and stats which in the end merge into one badass mamma jamma.
Ive said this before. T1 would be like standard and/or some advanced gear, T2 would be advanced and/or some proto type stuff. T3 would be completely cutomizable and in a class of its own. They could have you choose a stalk (rear), upper/lower reciever (middle part), and a barrel or whatever (front).
Sites and add ons which are just extra crap dont have to be only T3. Because thats just something you stick on the gun, not what the gun is made of. |

Edit: Im sure they will make this a racial skill that you will have to skill into separately. Now they could have the skill cover all the weapons that race makes, or it could just cover one particular weapon like a weapon proficiency. But rest assured, it will most likely cost a metric ton of SP.
This was my thinking exactly. Only one tiny change though. I would say have a raceless variant of standard to proto type gear "militia gear" be tech 1 (lore wise, you could atribute it to some NPC mega corp who is friendly with all the empires). Racial variants gear would be tech 2, and modular weaponry and specialized racial dropsuits (perhapse sectional: legs/waist, torso/arms, head; or, perhaps: legs, torso, arms, head, if you are willing to go with four sections instead of three) could be tech 3. |

If they want to make weapon attachments and such, fine, but I honestly don't see how they can really do "tech 3 weapons". Tech 3 ships are ships with different subsystems that give radically different bonuses and have different attributes that are suited for completely different roles. I just don't see how that would work in a weapon. It'd be essentially like giving us one core weapon and us building the weapon completely from scratch beyond there on our own... |

TL;DR
Customizing weapons will be available in the future. There will be no 'Tech 3' weapons that specifically support this, it will be for all weapons. T2 and T3 are likely concepts that will not be seen in DUST when it comes to weapons.
what about dropsuits?? I heard talk of a tech 2 heavy suit. something like the heavy sentinel or something like that. |

As long as range is not level based I'll be fine with mismatched ranges. There is really no need for two guns of the same build. To out range each other. |
