Honestly, from what I've seen of Destiny, it looks like a pretty MMORPG with FPS as its primary fight mechanic.
That's not a bad thing, just different.
On the other hand, Destiny is being created from whole cloth and it shows. For instance, The Hive looks like the most generic space zombie I can think of. I don't yet get the feel of a well-developed world and backstory, i.e.- they don't have a ten-year history and they didn't hire me to do the worldbuilding.
It is also worth noting that Dust can be wildly successful with a tenth of the userbase that Destiny will need to break even. Bungie's bloated a bit since the days of Myth. |

Um... Do you hear that? I think it's History come a-knocking to point out that a no-name game of Internet space spreadsheets is celebrating its ten anniversary of constant growth in defiance of every critic who predicted its death. |

Many of us are well aware of CCP's history.
Many of use are also aware of the history of those "proper" games' developers.
- Bungie- WTF was Myth III farmed out?! What happened with the promised awesome of ONI? Why did the "AAA" shooter Halo have so many issues as an MMOFPS? - EA- 'Nuff said about them - Ad nauseum.
Game companies, like most companies, disappoint.
What is remarkable is that CCP manages to do so much with so little. The graphics shown for Uprising really push the boundaries of the PS3's abysmal hardware limitations. Everyone knows that they are also "secretly" making sure that things like art assets are ready for Unreal Engine 4 and PS4 deployment.
So, really what it comes down to is that Bungie likely heard rumblings of EVE getting a persistent-world FPS when it was first floated years ago and said, "Hey, we could do that!".
The difference is that CCP is already doing it and Destiny can't do crap for real players until the PS4 comes out.

AAA has come to mean more about quality than size of the developer.
Take Star Citizen and Shroud of the Avatar for example. Both are widely being considered AAA games based on the previous work of their lead designers (and development screenshots, etc.) even though both are being made by small, crowdfunded corps. |

You need to get your eyes checked.
You need to understand rendering load. Opening up the terrain alone is scary, scary, terrifying load on the GPU. Think about how many extra polygons have to be loaded, tracked, textured, shaded, raytraced, filtered, etc. in real time.
My dupa is overheating just trying to imagine it. I need a cooling fan back there.
Add on top of that the massive improvements in general look-and-feel and I stand by my original statement.
Just because some other game looks prettier in its fishbowl doesn't mean that that games' devs pushed the limits of the hardware.

a three day old half drank up beer you find behind the couch after the hangover from a major weekend rager has finally faded into memory?
But I will consider DUST 514 a AAA game the day I can walk into Walmart and buy myself a copy.
PS don't drink that beer. Even if it seems like it's free. Finding opened beers that you've left around the house is not the same as finding money in the pockets of some jeans you haven't worn for a while.
Are you talking trash about Free Beers?

I know this is going kind of a long ways back to respond to what isn't really a particularly relevant point, but yes, yes Myth III was farmed out. It was developed by MumboJumbo, and Bungie had no hand in it.
Sorry, I meant that in the sense of Why The *kitten* was it farmed out. I suppose I should've been clear.
I guess I've just been very disappointed in Bungie ever since they got big investors. |
