I was very excited to see an MD balance thread today, mostly because I've been wanting one and didn't want to write it myself. However, upon inspection, I found it wasn't what I expected. So here's a real one!
I personally love the mass driver, and as soon as I saw it in game I knew its what i wanted to main. I love arcing grenade weapons in other FPSes and the MD is one of the coolest I've seen. I can use it effectively due to experience judging trajectory in a number of games.
It most certainly is NOT a "noobtube". If you have a solid team/squad, the splash damage combined with your team throwing fire downrange makes it seem like it is much more powerful than it really is, especially on the receiving end. However, against a well-organized team, the MD is probably the one weapon you never want to be trapped in a corner with. You have very limited ammo, extremely limited damage projection (try not to miss), and if you're unlucky enough to be in CQ you're going to learn about self-damage very quickly.
Personally I would like to see:
- A super-assault (bombard) variant of the mass driver. Even more grenades in clip, minimized damage, but splash in a very wide radius. It would be a very good support weapon, with extraordinary area denial capabilty. Clearly it would fall short againts well-tanked suits who know how much damage they can take from you (as the current assault variant already does)
- Inspired by this post, variant damage. I would like to see the mass driver have the versatility that the projectile turrets from Eve that it is trying to emulate already have. An AV variant would be kinda cool, and a well balanced flux variant would be perfectly reasonable.
- On the topic of varied ammo, low damage smoke grenades, stun grenades or super bright flares would be awesome.
- More Ammo. Please? I have to give up my equipment slot to use this weapon that hardly warrants it.
- Breach variant needs work, IMO. Its not really that useful. I find myself using the standard variant to much greater effect, simply because the breach completely loses its long-range potential.
- Better reticle. ADS is not very useful, maybe a better range indicator?
- Delayed explosion variant. I would like to bounce grenades around corners. Maybe this one is low damage or something.
Thoughts? Additional stuff? Haters? My fellow grenadiers, get in here! |

First and foremost, the terrain glitch needs to be addressed. After that, I'd like to see different ammo and grenade types like bouncing and sticky bombs. And inspired by that horrible grenadier topic, a grenadier dropsuit would be a nice addition with bonuses to mass driver fire rate, reload speed, damage, maximum ammo, splash radius or something along those lines. |

I don't think we need a whole new suit class dedicated to grenades, but maybe a tier II or just a different variation of assault or logi dedicated to all forms of explosive mayhem. |

Well, yeah, that's kind of what I was aiming for. Like a Tech-II or faction suit. Has to be Minmatar onry though. |

Nice wish list. I'd like to see some of the things mentioned here too, pretty cool.
But nothing to do with 'balance'.
If I could give NOOBS one piece of advice - GET ON A TUBE ! ...especially the assault variant -seriously- watch your kills, ISK and SP go up - it's a sweet weapon if you don't fuss too much about k/d (or balance let's face it - with no SP you need all the help you can get! |

i like the ideas of differing types, though the flash one i dont see a point as there would be flare redux in a suit that can handle EVA.
more ammo is a MUST. done the math, even HMG and FG have more ammo/mag balance, everyone else gets 4 to 5 mags, MD gets 3, and it looks forced.
as for assault types, an artillery launcher would be sweet, maybe have like two shots, but big splash, and fair damage.
the MD is good, but can still easily be outdone, and no way a single man user, team dynamics are important when using one, always... i like being able to shell people to corral them after all |

Artillery Mass Driver.
New variant based on comments in this thread's OP and in the other MD thread.
Longer range. More ammo per clip. Lower damage, but wider radius.
New HUD interface that shows more clearly where the shot is going to land.
Sounds OP, right? That's where a new feature comes in - this variant (and ONLY this variant) has special long-range shells which can't be pre-armed like regular MD rounds, meaning there's a 15m flight time before the round can explode. If the round hasn't armed, you're basically hitting a shielded target with a relatively slow-moving lump of metal. And not even a particularly heavy one, considering it's filled with advanced electronics and explosives.
If the shot hits a target before arming, it deals minimal damage (3 or 4 to shields, 6 or 7 to armour). It's only when it's actually being used as a long-range support weapon that it can hurt targets. |

first consider it's not trolling, then reconsider your genius.
