Played for the first time today...hope this info helps out. This is not meant to troll or flame, just let you know how it went.
First Impression was frustrated and over-whelmed. I've played lots of FPS and MMO over the years. Dust seems like a great concept, but the learning curve is steep. By the time I sat through all the tutorials, I had enough time to play two skirmishes. Both times over-run by superior fire-power and spawn camped.
Just my opinion. I would have preferred to get a tutorial on how to fight, capture, and whatever. Let me fight and show me how to level afterward. Let me pick factions afterward. I had no idea what I was picking when I made a character, it didn't mean anything to me. Let me get invested in the fight before I start picking sides.
If I lose my equipment when I die, then I should be able to loot corpses. This may be possible, but I do not know how to do it.
I'll be back. Thanks for listening.

Forget tutorials, just go and shoot. No need to make it complicated :) IMHO tutorials should unlock after 10 matches.

The next update/build is coming up on May 6 so it's best to enjoy the game until then when refund all your skill points and ISK spent on skill books. There is going to be a ton of changes to the game. |

This is pretty much true, there are alot of finer points that a tutorial would assist with, but for the most part just splashing into the deep end is best, it only takes about 1 or 2 matches to get a decent feel for what you are doing. By 10 matches you should have a good handle on making sure to buy gear and how you can spawn in and what those CRUs and SDs are.
A tutorial where you are called on mission to shoot some bugs and resupply at a depot and where you get killed by an orbital strike and have to respawn at a CRU then capture a turret to use it to shoot a big bug and then drive a LAV to a cannon site where you have to activate it to do damage to some flying drone ship sounds like it would cover just about everything you needed. |

There are some corps set up for newer players to help them out. Dust University is one. Or you can send a message in local chat to see if someone would pick you up and train you. |

A five minute guided mission where I shoot, capture, respawn would have been great. Felt like a total tool when I got to Alpha and realized that I had no idea how to capture it. I get the concept, but I didn't realize that I had to find the control panel and hold a button. Some games you just sit in the window, some you arm stuff like this one.
I like the idea of a tiered tutorial that pops after a mission or two. Learning all the back story and and upgrades is great, but the main thing I care about when I log in for the first time is whether or not this is going to be fun. Take Wow or DCU. Character creation to combat is a few minutes. Lead me through all the deep stuff once I realize that I need it.
Anyway, we'll see how tonight goes. Thanks for the response. |

Well, in the beginning WOWs tutorial was dreadful. Last time I looked it was pretty decent nowadays. I'm sure CCP will make a good tutorial for all our blueberries. |

I've never done a tutorial mission for any game. I just log on and start pew-pew-ing
that being said, Dust is the most frustrating game I ever played as a newbie in my life. Important to keep in mind that, even when you get stomped and redlined...and pubstomped...and spawnkilled....and spawnkilled again, you still get SP and money at the end of the game. |

Honestly the best thing you can do for yourself is to join a well organized corp asap. Skill and Gear disadvantages really diminish when you're running with a squad of people who know what they're doing and communicating actively. |

In all honesty, this is still a rough beta so any time spent by CCP making a tutorial would go to pot pretty quickly. Im sure that once they have at least the final major points of the game down that they will build something.
Like others have said, you have a gift right now of being able to try out a lot of stuff and have your SP refunded to you in a couple weeks. Use the time wisely to see what you like and what your best fit is.
Good luck

I suggest that you just pick an assault suit with an assault rifle and start by doing ambush missions. You will learn the maps, learn what other people are using and doing and then you can start exploring other venues once you feel more comfortable. They are the same maps that repeat but on ambush it is much smaller, then OMS, then skirmish.
Basically don't ever stay still (you'll get sniped), don't take a heavy face on (you'll get mowed) and don't try to 1 vs 1 people just yet as you are the weakest link. Gear does make a difference in this game. Many new players get fed up of dying and resolve to sniping. Don't, you won't learn anything about the mechanics or the classes and the weapons particularities. I wasted a lot of time red lining when I started. Now I just get into the thick of things and it is much more fun.
I suggested assault as it is the easiest to play and is very versatile. However if you have some experience already and want to roll face without a lot of points, I found that the heavy as a starter is the most overpowered. The logi is a lot of fun but you have to know what you are doing and I don't suggest you start with that. Finally, the scout. It's very gimp and you will die over and over. Use it only later when you are more experienced. It can be a decent class but you have to be good at strafing and you have to know the maps to play a shotgunner IMO.
Anyways I am no expert but this is what i have learned on my own by playing for 2 months. |

I just want you to know that you're absolutely right, and that the people in these forums will never believe you. I plan on making a very detailed description on what it's like to play this game and make one message clear:
The biggest thing this game has against it is how unfriendly it is to new players.
Here is a quick list of a few things that all new players need to hear but never will:
1) When you enter combat for the first time, you will be under-powered and under-armored. Your ability to tactically outwit your opponents is irrelevant, because you simply cannot do enough damage to capitalize on good planning.
2) Choosing the correct starting skills is incredibly important, and if you mess it up there is practically no way of being successful without starting over or accepting defeat until you gain enough skill points to cover your mistakes.
3) Even when you're moderately well established, you will run into players who have put more time into the game and simply have better gear than you. The fight will not be fair. It will not be even. The difference in power and defense is so heavily reliant on skill and gear in this game, that there are times you will be out-gunned to the point where you shouldn't even bother trying to fight.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Consider this for a second -- you veteran players know who is here. We all talk, we all understand the game (some better than others), and we're more than likely gonna stick it out until the game comes out. What you don't see are all the people who couldn't make it through those first couple days of hell and gave up on the game entirely. This game was well advertised on PSN and I'm sure many people downloaded it. However, jumping into the game is such a frustrating and annoying experience, that I'm sure many people gave up on it right away.
This is the number one problem facing the game, so if you care about how well it does I would make damn sure that you help new players as much as possible. |

No. Just no. This is a terrible idea and new players should not do this. Go look at the videos about beginner skill setup that are you YouTube. The user "lowratehitman" puts out some really good stuff. |

You completely ignored the importance of putting skills into the right places, which is the absolute most important thing for a new player to do.
Here's the priority for new player skill points:
1) Put skills into getting a non-militia grade drop suit 2) Put skill points into using tier 1 or 2 weapons 3) Put skills points toward shield or armor upgrades
I don't care how well you know the flow of battle or the map layouts. If you can't kill and can't take a few bullets, you're useless in this game. That's first priority. |

Thanks for seeing my point. This is a deep game, but it almost lost me on day one because I had no idea how to play. I see the point Rhino is making about just jumping in and shooting. I agree with that to a point, and I also concede the point about it being a beta. I never like being the weak link in the chain and going 0/13 and 0/12 right out of the gate sucked. On top of that, I had a pool of skill points that I was asked to dump into bins that I did not understand. I just hate to see good games get written off early because people don't understand how to play.
The one thing I will say is there is plenty of help here once you get on to the forum.
