I've looked through the Forums for an answer on this, I'm a frequent user but can't seem to find a post on this in particular.
Apparently I can annoy some people when I play....but I don't know why or what I've done wrong. I don't really want this to be a personal thing against me but it'd be nice to know what not to do differently. Is there any tips someone could put out there for new-to-FPS people that would make it more enjoyable to all players?
I'm in game as Flyngpenguin so if I've offended you in anyway please let me know how. I'm a big boy and I can take the criticism but please don't be rude or offensive:) You can even post the instance in question, I'm hoping it will help other newer players not make the same mistakes. I really like this game and hope to get better but I am new to the FPS genre and actually don't really have much time to play anything else these days.
I do make an effort to respect other players but I guess it's not enough:
- I try not to play Ambush anymore because I still generally have a negative K/D(I'm working on it) and I know that directly impacts the match for the rest of the team vs Skirmish which is usually the MCC going down. No one likes to lose because AwesomeRandomGuy was running around on multiple suicide missions.
- I never AFK for points. If I'm there I'm active.
- I do sometimes chat in local Chat but it's local chat. I try to leave the dedicated team channels alone for people looking for squads and such.
- I don't hijack or jump into anyone's Tanks or Dropships because I know how much ISK the owner has invested in them.
- However......I do suck at squads...don't know why but I die a lot if I'm in a squad. I guess I just try too hard and forget to stay back in cover.

Hmmm... Do you use push-to-talk if you have a mic? (you should) Do you use an eye toy as a mic? (Combined with the one above, everyone can hear everything on your TV) Do you ever get in vehicles? If so, do you try jumping out of dropships, or are you a bad gunner?
If you don't notice doing anything that might make people dislike you, it's possible that your problem is lack of awareness, as some people are completely oblivious to everything that's going on around them on the battlefield- it's super annoying when I would have survived a fight, but a nearby blueberry did nothing to attempt to help me. |

Don't worry Penguin... I went 2 and 23 in my first two skirmishes. They'll be begging you to join up if I'm around.
If it hadn't been for reading your post, I would have never even thought about taking then random tank. This game is a whole new animal from what I am used to.

Yeah, I find it annoying as well. But tbh openly expressing irritation at a newbie isn't very nice. (Not addressed to you, but to whoever took offence at this guy) Fallenpenguin, the fact that you posted this thread makes you better than a lot of other new players. If you are sticking to those rules you outlined for yourself (which I don't doubt you are) and you don't have microphone problems, then anyone getting annoyed with you is likely only upset because of your potentially poor performance in matches. You'll get better if you keep at it so don't worry about it. For improving, I suggest looking into joining a new player friendly corp. I'm relatively certain that dust university and bojo's school are both good groups. Alternatively you can tough it out and go solo.

You first problem is worrying about your K/D ratio. In this game warpoints matter, not K/D. I have seen players, including myself, have a 1/7 K/D ratio but have higher war points due to their activity in the game which lead them to be higher on the leaderboards.
It's best that you do link up with a squad and don't play John Rambo. You can use your squad to flank enemies and such. |

Join GamersForChrist we will help you learn how to play it just sounds like you are new which is a big annoyance to older players. It's because everything cost money so when you can't perform like a long term player they get mad there is not anything you can do about it but keep playing and getting better. Also turn voice chat on and push to talk off even if you don't have a mic this will allow you to hear what players are saying. Best to take orders if your new or at least hear what people are saying on the mic. |

Something annoying is the light gunner in an allies tank constantly shooting my tank with missiles despite my yelling in team voice for him to stop it;s just annoying. |

Scheneighnay McBob hit the nail on the head. Awareness is my biggest irritation with new players. Just remeber that your on a team and you must count on them as much as they count on you. The amount of times I have a blueberry looking at me while a red stands behind me shooting me is countless. I run a heavy suit so Im not that mobile. Some help would be nice.
The help is appreciated nad reciprocated as well. You save my life and ill do my best to save yours. |

I'm sorry, I've never done this to anyone but it would be really funny to watch.
I'm not complaining about all of this. In fact it was brought to my attention by mistake by someone who apparently didn't know he was talking to the person he was complaining about. I still don't know what his problem was.
I do use a turtlebeach headset to listen in, it really helps when someone is asking for ammo or revives and I'm nearby. I do use the Mute on the mike but maybe its not working, I'll activate push to talk next time I'm on and try that. One thing this game is missing is the icon to tell you your broadcasting your voice. Mb that's it, I find the open mike a bit annoying as well.
Those out there should know us blueberries do listen in even if we're not talking, don't be afraid to ask us to jump in and help. I personally sometimes hold back from helping someone if it looks like he has a squadmate nearby. I don't like stealing a squads WP but I will jump in if he looks like he needs it.
Either way, please keep posting what not to do. I have heard veterans complain in the past which is why I've changed a few of my habits but a lot of newer people don't have a clue they are doing anything wrong.

I run Logi 99 percent of the time so friendly Heavies are my favorite thing to find ingame. I do tend to follow them around if I can.

In that case, it might be because people don't always understand the whole logi situation- and you might not be doing anything wrong.
People tend to rage when a logi isn't immediately repairing or reviving them, but they don't understand that if said logibro goes out of his way to help the rager, if could make the situation worse. |

oh and make sure if your going to revive someone that he is clear to move and recoup a little. Just got 6 kills on the same player cause i let the logi heal him over and over. I my self have had multiple deaths because of this. |

For what it is worth, after reading through here, day 2 went alot better. Squaded up every mission, tried to stay with my squad. Spent more time supporting than trying to take everyone on.
Hang in there Penguin. |

I have been guilty of this in the past. My current strategy is not to revive someone if I cannot remove the threat or if I am not willing to stand by them and draw some of the fire. You can probably guess this doesn't always work well for both of us so I'm not sure if it's a valid strategy. I'm also going to upgrade my nanite injectors.
ok...another question. I had noticed some people complaining in the past about people randomly joining their squads in game. I used to do it because I do get WP but never enough to get an orbital. I thought i was helping them but once I noticed people complaining I stopped. I'd like to hear some thoughts on this if possible.
You guys really are helping here, I'd like to avoid anymore of these mistakes. |

It was suggested here earlier to join a corp that's new player friendly, so I'd have to pop in and suggest Bojo's School of the Trades and/or Dust University. Both of these schools are committed to helping teach new players about the different aspects of the game and both are more than willing to take you in.
Aside from that, as far as KDR is concerned... it really doesn't matter. The game is about war points, and if you're a dedicated logibro (or an RRR Logibro [RRR = Repair, Revive, Resupply] ), you're going to rack up war points right and left by sticking with your team and helping them out.
To answer your question about randomly joining a squad. It's more polite to pop into the squad and ask them if you can squad of with them, rather than saying nothing at all. I'm not sure if you have a microphone or not, but if you do just switch to squad chat and ask. Simple as that, really. |
