Can or will there be an equivalent to Eve's tackle frigates (in immediate usefulness) in Dust514?
In Eve, brand new players can really ruin another player's day in a matter of a couple hours worth of skill training into tackling skills. In a week that can be a fairly useful disruption frigate. Tackling is a technique that occupies an enemy vessel not letting them escape. Sometimes when used against a much larger enemy the tackle frigate can fit its tank to be mostly invulnerable, but often they are vulnerable just enough to hold down an enemy long enough for friends to show up.
I'm thinking that a scout or logi hacker with either sprint/dampening mods and some remote explosives, could pose a pretty decent effective-new player addition in a lot of skirmish matches. It would go against a sort of FPS instinct of players wanting to grab a rifle and begin shooting people, but it would be sufficiently disruptive, split forces, and start teaching a player the usefulness of watching a map, using cover, and getting a feel for how battle lines move. |

Anyone can be immediately useful in Dust 514, At the very worst a newbie can run counter sniper with a militia rifle and provide overwatch and recon support. Most snipers pop with a single headshot and most aren't moving. |

Well the difference is in DUST, any new player with a gun is a threat to a proto suit, so the role isnt as needed. I wish there was some equivilant for dealing with tanks though. A way to shut off the tanks engines so they cant flee... |

I can think of a few decent starter roles for a newbie. Scout suit, armed with a shotgun and RE's - sprint and capture initial points, then put an RE down. Blow up anyone who tries to cap. Or, as above, a counter sniper.
I wouldn't recommend a newbie being a logi (in a militia suit, at least) because he'll still be on the front lines, standard logis get better bonuses than he does, such as the armor boost.
Newbies are much better off in a supporting role, true, but that doesn't mean they can't start off in a frontline role. Militia assaults can cause a lot of damage if used properly. |

Well, I was mostly thinking about corp battles, it "could" happen. A good fireteam can make it without sniper support or a weaker sniper and it would be great training for newbies to give scout reports and learn the flow of a battle.
But honestly since corp battles will be limited to 16 v 16, there is no reason for a "Immedate" fit, because you aren't needed. In EVE you can participate, in Dust, your a liability. |

"Starter" roles that a new player can fill with minimal skill investment:
Counter-sniper - as mentioned.
Behind-lines hacker - Logi for fast hacking, or Scout for fast movement. Shotgun and your choice of SMG or Pistol on a Scout, with Profile Dampener for better sneaking or Armour Repairer to let you disengage and actually recover after a bad encounter. Logi would be best off with Mass Driver or AR, but a Shotgun can work on some maps. The primary role is to, as the name suggests, flank or slip through the enemy lines, get to objectives, and hack things. Steal all their stuff while they're busy with your teammates, then move on. As you get more experienced, there will be situations where you can position yoursel fot cut off the enemy's line of retreat. They fall back, already heavily wounded, and run straight into a hidden enemy with a Shotgun/AR who they didn't realise was right there. Or they fall back to realise their rear line has been turned into an enemy spawn area, and as they try to reclaim it, your REs remind them who really owns the place.
Rear-guard Logi - Two different fittings, one with an Uplink and whatever else will fit, the other with Nanohives, Repair Tool and/or Nanite Injector. If you're running Militia suits (Artificer Starter gives you a starter to work with), you have to pick which 2 items you'll equip, but Standard suits give you more options if and when you train up for them. For this setup, your objective is to avoid direct enemy encounters, and to provide support to your team with well-placed resupply points, or by positioning yourself to heal/revive anyone who goes down.
There are plenty more, but these are the most easily-explained and most likely to be rewarding when going up against players with better gear than a new player will have. |

I'm still thinking in terms of WP a player could get during a game, the stealth hacker/shotty could be the most profitable as it could be rewarded the most for close matches with taking lots of objectives going back and forth. |

"Is" being present-tense, meaning the item already exists in DUST right now?
Which section of the marketplace did they hide that one in? Because I checked everything that might logically contain reference to such a device without luck. Is it maybe filed under "Laser Rifles" or "Turrets"? |

Something that's affordable for new players and doesn't require tons of SP... I'd say the dust equivalent is standard infantry. No need for a specialized noob build, at least not yet (just like frigates were perfectly viable for general use in the very early days of EVE ;)). |

I thought of something along these lines, basically a 'stasis' grenade. Which would slow movement speed of all infantry and vehicles in range of the blast for a specific cool down period similar to how mods on vehicles work now. While this sounds great but with out first giving a EHP buff to vehicles first I kind of thought it might be over powered. But would be an interesting thing if balanced properly.
Edit: Also your point about tanks fleeing, that is probably one of the best defenses a tank has right now. Which would give the need to buff EHP some on vehicles, probably just damage reducing resists.
I could imagine a squad mate shouting over comms that they have the tank tackled so now they all have to focus fire on it to kill it before the stasis timer ends. |

More people on your side in eve (new or not) are always useful. The newer players can be extra useful by using modules like points and webs and ecm. They can also be useful if they can scout.
Unfortunately this is not always the case in DUST for a couple of reasons.
The first and biggest is the player limit. If you have 16+ players available then you don't want the new player because you could bring someone else more experienced along instead.
The other issue is orbital bombardments. Your new player is more likely to die and give the enemy team warpoints which brings them closer to dropping an orbital on you.
In the far future when player limits are removed and orbital bombardments are always available (with some other method of limiting them such as isk cost) then more players (whether experienced or not) will almost always be an advantage. I'm looking forward to that. |
