When the marketing machine kicks in and (hopefully) hundreds of thousands of new players pick up this game for the first time, where will they start? Is the matchmaking in instant battles the only thing that gives them even the slightest chance to learn the game without getting thrown in at the deep end?
I know Eve Online has a notorious learning curve, but it at least has tutorial & L1 missions and highsec mining available. From what I've seen so far, Dust has nothing, and the only new gameplay feature I've heard about for the next release is the planetary conquest which is where all the top players & corps will be.
Will the big launch simply lead to two million inactive accounts?
Sorry if this is a FAQ. |

CCP should implement different leaderboards, in brackets of total SP.
Say hypothetically, the brackets were 5 million SP.
300k - 5M SP ( all players fight each other and have leaderboards that reflect that).
5.01M - 10M ( all players fight each other and have leaderboards that reflect that).
So on and so forth.
Planetary Conquest would allow every player of any SP fight each other.
We are kidding ourselves if we think that allowing brand new players to constantly play against players who have 6,7,8 or even more Million SP than them will be a good marketing tool, all it will do is drive people back to CoD.

There are all kinds of ways CCP could implement "new player" content. PvE is the obvious one, but reduced rewards matches or even hard-limited matches would work.
While I'm interested in which of these CCP are considering, I'm much more concerned about the possibility they are going to do their full launch with none of them. |

I certainly hope that they do. Full release is how many months away? I have heard guesstimates of a November 2013 or May 2014 full release. If these guesses are even vaguely correct then quite a few players, even the casual ones if 2014 is correct, will have between 10 and 40 million skill points if they are really hardcore.
Would you want new players facing that in the current set up? PC will certainly distract the better players and corps but by how much. If you only hold one territory then at most you can only be attacked once every 24/48 hr period. So the rest of the time will be spent in the regular game modes. Yes there will be plenty of corps looking to attack but again any given location can only be attacked one during a given time period. Besides holding or taking territory is very expensive and how will that be funded? Yes via pub matches.
So it is absolutely necessary that there are other game modes to divert vets into to give the newberrys a chance as well as other means of raising capital for PC etc |

Isn't that what match making is all about... oh wait right... it doesn't work.
As for easy mode, you'd more maybe want a training mode where the rewards are minimal (in terms of sp/isk/salvage) but at the same time losses etc doesn't count.
But I can maybe see the similar thing happening as when it went open beta, it was pretty easy to play against the new mercs then.

Speaking of making it easy... perhaps CCP should reorder the list of roles. As a totally new person picking the first thing because you don't really know the different between them lands you in a sniper role.
Throw noobs into a front-line suit with a spray and pray. At least they'll be in the mix instead of dotting the hills. |

This is the kind of thing I think CCP should do, as it would take very little effort and for the benefit it gives. I outlined my thoughts on this a while back over here.
That and PvE, but PvE will take significant development effort so it might not be practical to get it done in time to meet marketing's deadlines for the full launch. |

Full release is a little over a month away I believe.

Why?
QQ Kittens are so much fun. They whine in their mics. They whine on the Forums.
You can watch them in battle as their QQ fills up their helmets.
Glug, glug little QQ Kittens.
How about this instead?
Make them answer questions to prove they have asked questions and read the replies on the Forums. And prove they have used a Search as well.
Then I might try to switch off my Snarky Switch. Although, it might be stuck since it has been on a long, long time. |

On post #44 on the same thread CCP Navigator explains that it was misleading statement and was just a update on the beta and not full release.

Quote:The wording for this was off and has been amended. It should simply have stated that Uprising was going to be released so apologies if the message conveyed was incorrect.
They have to add and fix a lot more things before a release like that, Soon(TM) (Like the player market or a trading system at the least/PVE in my opinion) |

I'm worried about the players who try the game, give it their best shot but are still getting repeatedly pubstomped, realise its no fun and leave.
In a sandbox game, other players are the content, so a sandbox game needs a "feeder" system to bring those players in and keep them from quitting so that they can become content for each other. Dust has no such system currently. |

Simple, create a "Meta" Counter on your suit that tells you your meta level. Restrict matches to meta levels and inform the player of it. Once in a restricted match, you'll not be able to select fittings that surpass that meta level.
So, yes new players will play against more experienced players, that will own them, but at least it would restrict the stomping from being performed with the supremely unbalanced officer weapons etc... And it would decrease the payout for doing so. Hardcores will be rewarded more richly by playing higher meta games, and that would serve as an attraction. |

Sorry if this is a FAQ.
Death in EVE is considerably harsher than death in dust.
In the former, you may risk what might take days, weeks or more of active work to recover financially, and if your pod is popped, you risk losing even more money on an expensive clone, or worse, actual skill progression. In the latter, you will have (in the most expensive losses) recovered your money in literally a couple hours of ambush, and if you wanted to, you could do it in a free suit.
Not a very deep end to be thrown into. |
