EVE was brutal, unfinished, and had serious problems when it was young. However, it was a unique experience (sandbox space based MMO where everyone plays on the same server) and never really had competition for its niche. I honestly believe that if EVE had a serious competitor in the early days, it probably would have died long before it grew into what it is today.
DUST, on the other hand, isn't particularly unique. It is a generic FPS with above average customization, clunky gameplay, and a near-pointless tie-in to the EVE universe. It is also limited to the one less popular console this generation. Console FPS are a dime a dozen, and Planetside 2/Defiance do what DUST is supposed to do just as well as it does at this point. The core FPS elements are below average, and CCP's meaningful dev cycle is slower than Blizzard's.
CCP seems to expect to be able to pull an EVE, where the game is broken and unfinished for years while they slowly fix it up, but as a game, it is not unique nor interesting enough to survive on microtransactions for years if the majority of the population sees it as a bad/boring game. Unfortunately, I fear this is where we are at this point. Practically anywhere on the internet you talk about DUST, you tend to get "meh" or "lolbad" reception. From what we know about Uprising, I doubt that is going to change any time soon, and if closed beta to now is any indication, it'll be another 6 months for the next update. Alright sweet so...You'll be quitting I take it? Later.
Haven't played in weeks. Still hoping CCP will surprise everyone and deliver with Uprising. I like the ideas behind this game and want it to succeed, but the execution thus far has been terrible. |

When a console game loses a portion of its playerbase, it's nearly impossible to advertise to get people to come back. Yeah i think you are missing that Dust is not any console game. It is revolutionary. You may have noticed you downloaded it....you did not go to game spot or walmart or order it on amazon. Yeah sure you could download other big title games...but with DUST everyone playing it did. You may have also noticed you are playing a open beta on a PS3...and it updates with scheduled releases. This has never happened before on consoles. Hell it feels like i am playing some indie game like minecraft not a game put out by mega corps Sony and CCP. Dust may not be here 2 years from now...it may not be remembered....but it has already changed everything. Don't believe me? What was the last game that totally changed the PC/Console market? Halo. It was the first multiplayer FPS on the console and it created the FPS market we have today...notice how battle field is now focused on the console market? Now who made Halo? Bungie...what is bungie trying to do today? They are making an MMO FPS for consoles....which is what Dust already is.
Being innovative is one thing, being innovative and being able to effectively execute the innovation is quite another.
Brink was innovative for its parkour fps gameplay.
MAG was innovative for having 128 v 128 games and deep skilling.
Battlefield was innovative with destructible environments.
And COD was innovative with auto-aim and leveling up.
Thing is, just because you're doing something new doesn't guarantee success or even fame, the company has to be able to get it right, and in a console fps, they need to do it right the first time. There's no second chances for advertising on a console for a single game just because you released something new for it and or tried to fix something unless the game was already popular and stable to begin with.
Just because CCP might be the first, doesn't mean they are or will be the best. If Bungie pulls it off better on initial release, then guess who Sony's going to give the lions share of the advertising grants to when it comes time for each games expansions? |

Eve has never lost player count, in all ten years. You can trust dust will do the same.
Hey come back, it's been a 12 month break, we've got giant robots, the game is good now, and you've got 8 million free sp! People will keep poping in just like eve becuase no other mmo has ever undergone so much development after release. Most mmos drop the devs, but ccp hires MORE devs after release.
Arena Net does this has well, they still have over 300 people hired there.
You can trust dust will strive. In 10 years it will have graphics comparable with that days consoles. Just look at eve ten years ok. They set the bar for supporting an mmo after release. It took them a long time but you'll never have to worry bout lack of new content in dust after release : )
to be fair eves growth is as much from multi boxing as from new players, I would bet you that as older players leave new players start creating more accounts. the number online at any given time has not drastically increased. That said eve players that quit are about as common as smokers that quit, in other words not for long or not with out a damn good reason. |

Frankly I'm not too worried about player retention in general, it critical mass that I'm worried about, I mean we got damn close on open beta but between the losses due to people not liking it and the toy losing its shine, we dropped well below that line.
A game like this needs a certain number of people to grow and if we cant hit that then no amount of awesomeness will make this game work. What has kept EVE and did keep WOW afloat were that you always knew some one that was playing(wows failure was relying on RL relationships and catering only to those people) , and because of that always had something to do.
Right now we have a great core of players like this but it doesn't fill the features this game already has, let alone those coming. With out a major boost in numbers(double the number of casual players and half again in hard core players) in the next couple of builds, I really don't think this game will be able to wow enough people to become critical let alone super critical. I really hope I am wrong or uprising starts a turn around, because while I will stick by this game until its dropped or ccp fucks up real bad, being sub critical and surviving on source blueberries sucks knowing in time even those would fade and then you would have even more work to do........err the game would eventually disappear altogether.
yes I made that analogy, and now some of you know something about me, I hate myself, but before I knew it I was half way there and figured I might as well finish it. |

COD is the most repetitive, boxed in, mindless Cheeto Eating Burp Off I have ever played. And ive been playing games since PONG. DUST is a ground breaking game leading the way into the future of gaming. C>O>D Cash Over Development. DUST Development Used Sustained and Tested. I applaud CCP for going for it. COD is like a quick nut. Dust is freaking trying to bring us a deep, immersive, (one day open world) game where we can make our own society thats FREAKING connected to another Kick Ass game on a completely separate system and people are like wahhhh, uuuuuoooo,, boho mmmmmuuhh gotta make it more like COD so I can tea bag my buddy Pink _Panties507. gguuuaahha No dammit. DUST is leading and going to bring gammers, development, fun and groundbreaking gameplay to console and not going to pander to Drop_Shot Billy. In my opinion this game will generate excitement with out advertising. Not a huge amount at first but it will grow and grow. It will fail in my opinion if they try to hedge their bet, appeal to the masses and go for the fast cash grab. Now will you please wait for your Turgid Avacado to ripen before you squash it or I will send my crack smoking explosive rats in to deal with this issue. Of course I coud be wrong. |

if dust dies here it will be a foot note, "a oh yea I heard about that but never got around to playing it, what was it about again?"
Also, wrong! I believe first fps on console goes to golden eye, although I could be wrong about that, what were you saying about firsts being special or game changers??
frankly it wasn't halo that made a difference it was the XBOX, Japanese consoles dominated the console market for every generation that came out, while FPS were big, up to that point, and FPSers are by and large a western thing. out comes the XBOX a western company and BAM it ships with a shooter. Look at the PS up to that point, hell PS had to go back and add analogs after the fact, but once XBOX proved that shooters where one of the most if not THE most important markets in the west, sony scrambled to brand them selves as the bigboy shooter console.
YOU HAVE BEEN EDUMACATED!! RESPECT YOUR HISTORY!! LEARN YOUR HISTORY!!
Granted CCP has already started a lot of balls rolling, but if this torpedoes, you can bet that those balls will be suffocated in their cribs. This was gonna happen in the next couple of years anyways, now it might get pushed back.
That said, fail or succeed I still think CCP is the only company out there that has a chance to make a MMOFPS that doesn't suck. THAT said it woulda been easier on PC. |

Good to see there are more people here other than the instant-gratification-ADHD-children I'm hoping this development time will weed out. DUST is going to grow like a ******* oak, give it time people |
