Put them into skills that will increase your proficiency with sniper rifles and damage mods, then on the 6th of May redue it all again if you made a mistake.
Edit: I do some sniping when bored, I just stack complex damage mods in the highs, armor repper in the low, and whatever sniper rifle I feel like using, right now its one of the tactical ones but I think the charge is more popular. |

Depends on the type of sniper you are, honestly. Both should be scouts
For overwatch snipers (traditionally your compy snipers, but they should ONLY be played by people communicating with mics) SKILLS FOR ALL SCANNING MODULES Nanocircuitry (depending on what you want to do, you may want to fit repair nanohives, but it's still an important skill) If you prefer scout type I, sidearm skills Skills for shield extenders or armor plating
If you're a tactical sniper (they move around constantly, but DO NOT use tactical sniper rifles- standard ones are way better for this) profile dampening drop uplink deployment nanocircuitry (doesn't need to be as high as for overwatch, but you still want nanohives) sidearm of choice skill (type I is a must for this role) Armor repair systems (you'll want to fit an armor rep) Again, skills for shield extenders and armor plating. |

Sniper Rifle Operation to at least level 3. At this level, scope sway is reduced enough that you can - with a little patience - snipe effectively even while standing (although crouching will still be more effective).
Mechanics to level 5 (max). This gives you a passive increase on your armour, reducing the risk of being counter-sniped and one-shotted.
Shield Boost Systems to level 4 - this is almost entirely because it unlocks Shield Control, which is another passive HP buff, only this time it increases shields. So max that out as well.
Weaponry is another good skill to train. It doesn't give as large a damage buff as Sniper Rifle Proficiency, but because of how skills are applied to your damage output, training both up is more effective than just maxing either one. Especially when you consider that Sniper Prof has a higher multiplier, and gets more expensive, faster. Additionally, Weaponry gives you increased damage with all your other weapons, so your sidearm will also get a buff, and so will any alternative fittings you set up in case you're in the mood to not snipe, or in a situation where doing so is impractical.
As for fittings, Shield Extenders and Damage Mods are nice, but you have to choose one or the other. Do you want to tank a headshot from a counter-sniper? Shield Extenders make that more likely. Do you want to make sure the other guy WON'T tank your headshots? Damage Mods are your friend. Keep in mind that stanking penalties apply to Damage Mods, but NOT to Extenders.
In the low slots, you're choosing between a few options. Armour Plates, Armour Repairers and Profile Dampeners are the main ones I'd recommend. Plates give you a straight HP buff, but they cost you in mobility. You move slower, can't jump as high, and still use stamina just as fast (meaning you don't get as far with the same stamina drain). Armour Repairers don't improve your direct survivability very much, but they have a long-term benefit in that you can recover completely from damage if you have the time and patience to do so. Profile Dampeners are more of a benefit to the already low profile of the Scout, but even on an Assault, they make you less visible, which means enemies are less likely to work out where you're shooting from. |

How about you (gasp) don't be a sniper.
I hear shield tanked assault suits are pretty great if you are a K/DR *****. |

Wouldn't hurt if we had some snipers who know what they're doing. There's a playstyle that I've used before (although I didn't come up with it- I was inspired by someone who did extremely well as a starter fit sniper) that makes playing as a sniper very enjoyable, and very helpful. This style is much more than sitting on a hill the whole game like your average sniper. The specifics on this depend on what team has the upper hand.
- If your team has the advantage, play like a frontline assault with a long-range weapon. Support the blue blob by sniping past them at medium range, or countersniping.
- If the enemy team has the advantage, you'll play more like a scout than an assault. Sneak around the edge of the map, to effectively flank the other team, or hack something that's unguarded. While you're doing this, feel free to snipe any reds you see.
Along with this, I have a scout with a burst assault rifle and drop uplinks to put in key positions, so that my team can quickly regain access to objectives that got hacked. |

get your type A assault suit, complex shields, weaponry V, and sniper operation 3 and you'll be a good sniper. Double stack the damage mods and put a shield extender and you won't fall to other snipers easily.
Profile dampening and dropsuit command will help you be harder to spot on people's huds.
Getting sniper operation to 5 so you can get sniper proficiency is a VERY good idea.
I don't understand the point of the armor repper... an armor plate would be a better idea. You need to be able to survive a high alpha attack (aka a sniper shot) so you can retreat and reposition.
If you want to be a bad arse highly mobile sniper that can win skirmishes for your side, get remote explosives and learn to overwatch critical objectives. You alone can counter an entire team worth of people trying to take an objective, if done right.
Pistols are your friends, since you're supposed to be the king of aim. Head shot equals dead enemy.
There is no real point in sniping in a scout suit right now. You get no bonus that you need as a sniper. Having more ehp and slots will be more useful than slightly better mobility.
When the new build comes out, all this will change. |

There are too many snipers and scrubs with ARs. But you know what class there isn't enough of? Legitimate Logis, sure you'll see a lot of them around but most of them are twats that use the many slots for easy damage modifiers while leaving their equipment slots empty.

From my time as a sniper in game, my advice is thus:
Weaponry lvl 5.
SR Operation lvl 5.
SR Proficiency lvl 1.
Field Mechanics lvl 3+ (Depending on how much you value armor).
Sharpshooter skill to a level you deem necessary (eventually lvl 5).
The rest I would invest in Shields / Nanocircuitry / Sidearm.
As for equipment, I personally run in the Scout Vk.0, with a Kaalakiota SR, Militia nanohive, 2x Enhanced Profile Dampeners, 1 x Complex CPU ugrade, 2x Complex Damage Modules, 1x Shield Extender and a Toxin SMG for in your face lead giving.
It does me pretty well, although each suit lost is a big drop in the ISK department.
