As stated " Simply what is the average two farthest point on a skirmish map, sniper needs to know " . The reason I ask, is of course due to the light weapon sharpshooter proficiency skill in regards to sniper rifles. I am trying to figure out how important it is to train that skill up early on...
I know other factors are involved, such as the ability to spot the enemy, but I tend to manage. Most snipers are pretty predictable
If anyone can help me with this question, I would appreciate it |

Currently I don't know the answer to this and if you want to train sharpshooting for sniper rifles. I've seen where it looks like range is being removed from the skill and that its going to add to accuracy. Of course none of that is final until the patch in about 1 month. |

Max range of sniper rifle is 599, so you can calculate from there.
If I snipe, I'm rarely doing it from one objective into another. I suggest that you watch the range of your targets, and go from there. Maps like skim junction and manus peak can have targets 700+m away, ashland only 100. |

Sharpshooter doesn't really help with sniper rifles- if the only way you can see a target is by the dot in the scope turning red, you probably aren't going to hit them anyway- no matter what your sharpshooter is. |

Actually, it helps a lot. It is definitely needed on a number of maps. It is an absolute must if you plan on counter-sniping.

At the edge of the default range of sniper rifles, you can't even see the target- you're forced to rely on when the scope tells you you're aiming on or near the target- pretty much when the dot in the scope turns red.
I'm saying that sharpshooter doesn't help because even with the extra range, you can't see your target to hit it.

Maps like Line Harvest and Skim Junction, if you are sniping from one end of the map to the other you definitely need sharpshooter.
IIRC, the sniping from the hills at either end of Manus Peak results in greater than 600m distances too. |

Back to the OP.
Extreme ranges will put your and your skills to test. If you are a good to great sniper than it is not much different.
The only way you need the skill is if you consistently notice the targeting information indicates 0% efficiency. That means no damage if you take the shot.
Additionally I have yet to prove the skill works as documented. Other suggest it only works at lvl 5 which is possibly although horrible if true.
Normal ranges in most maps will be 100 to 300 meters. If you want to sit on one nest through match after match then you will see another 200+ meters to those. Skim Junction end to end is over 700m. The Large Rail Gun got Nerfed recently so they no longer can shoot LRG Turrets at the far end of the map.
The longest range I ever hit was slightly over 1000m. But that was before Chromosome with the Farsight. It actually worked at 1000 yards although it is not any better than any other Sniper Rifle today regarding range (599m). And on a map we no longer see in rotation. |

That is not true. It works. 5% per level. I was sniping on my alt earlier today (chick chicky boom)
If you're out of your max range, it doesn't show 0% most of the time. It doesn't show anything at all. To check your max rage, watch a guy running in your general direction who is out of your range. Keep your sights on him. Once your sights turn red, you'll get the target info, and that should be your max range. Of course, you could just calculate it and use that trick to figure out if your calculations are right or wrong.
I'll try to get you pix tomorrow bob, going to sleep after CB stuff D: Idk if you still want since Yani and maybe other can just confirm that you see people past 599 m, but yah, I'll get you some pix tomorrow. My favorite map to snipe on is Skim Junction. Depending on the map size, I can snipe from almost my spawn into the opposing team's spawn. |

Anyway, maybe CCP/Shanghai is simply mad at me for my constant nagging regarding bugs and bug reports.
But I cannot get a shot to register past 599m. I will try again next time I log in but Any cell phone picture from you is more believable then That 800km New Berry.

I was trying to say that on my screen I can see targets with arms and legs and heads at over seven hundred meters. It's just that my camera isn't that good.

(Done on hotchk1ss)
It's just 610m, but it should show you that if you upgrade light weapon sharpshooter, you will be able to hit targets beyond 599m.
light weapon sharpshooter is 5% bonus to range per level. L5 is 25% bonus, so with it you'll be able to hit targets at over 745meters.
Snipers like to hide behind enemy lines, and if you upgrade your range a lot, then you can hit the enemy snipers from your spawn and you'll never have to move for the entire game.
Poison Prey was hitting targets close to 800m (he said km, but it's m :P) because he upgraded proficiency too.
I could take pics at longer ranges, but I'm going to figure out the passive resist for tanks first :P
edit: and on a side note, don't be like that guy and snipe in a scout suit -_- |

OMG, I did say "800KM" !!! I must of been watching a thing on North Korean Missiles at the time .
Thank You, 0 Try Harder and others.. Yep I commonly hit out between the 700-800m range. Provided there is adequate forward recon.
I have the Light weapon sharpshooter proficiency skill at level 3 now. The reason I asked map size was for the reason of where to invest my skill points next. Should I max out the specialization skill, or head to Assault Drop suit Level 5.
Regardless of the team I am on... I want to make certain my first priority is always to the side I am fighting for. So I try to base my skill tree on that dogma.
I really do appreciate the advice from the threads |

I suggest skilling up your SMG (or perhaps pistol) skills so that you can engage in some CQC. Also, sitting in the same place that every other sniper in the game does sometimes is a bad idea.
I have 0 skills in infantry and run pure MLT, so as long as I am not running people over in a car, you should be able to come out on top (just pay attention to your blind spots) |

But some of my favorite snipers multi-taskers. They can run with infantry and switch to scopes when needed, either using a secondary weapon as a primary (ie pistol), the sniper rifle itself to hit close to medium range targets, but still have the ability to take a position up high to take out enemies and make calls.
Just keep in mind that using a Ishkone or other proto sniper (like the kaala) makes you a huge high-priority target. Killing someone using proto gear gives the person who did it lots of isk, and they just made you spend lots of isk because those things are expensive. |

OMG, and yes you suck...
I did not realize that about the kill payout value, in regards to the items a victim carries.
On close skirmish maps, with still being low on the CPU modifications for the individual items, when carrying the Ishukone it is a trade of for defence, and or side arm. For range skirmish I find it better to be able to handle a few glancing blows. For short range, it would of been a better defence to have a decent sidearm. (Which I did not ). But it was only you that exploited that, 3 separate times... Then I said screw it, and change position past the enemy forward lines and took my frustration out killing spawners. (sorry )
But you are without a doubt correct....Being stubborn in position, does not exactly raise your opportunity for survival.
But I had a lot of fun, and look forward to trying again.. |

Yah, I was surprised you didn't move up sooner, but then I was like well more isk for me! I thought you would have gone up to objective E and climbed the ladder up onto the pipes there. Obj. C is risky, but might have also been alright. We controlled the CRU by objective A, so it would have been a bad idea to go up those pipes for most of the game.
A meatshield of easy-to-kill blue dots is usually useful if you're sniping. If you're alone, you're pretty much undefended, especially if you have someone in a free suit who does not care about red-line suicides. |

I have a fit of a dropship with afterburners solely for the purpose of going into kamikaze mode against proto HAVs. It's a shame that the only time I tried it so far, the HAV mysteriously vanished when my dropship took off, and I ended up circling like an idiot the rest of the battle (the last time I tried using my serious dropship during that battle, it landed, then got hit by an orbital before the blue dots got the hint) |

@0 Try Harder, thanks for the pictures*. Definitely worth a thousand words.
I have had trouble at ~635m with LW SS at lvl 2 which should have been a straight Sniper shot. To get the Kill I had to move to under 600m. I have upgraded to lvl 3 anyway and will try it out when the situation warrants.
My alt had trouble with any Forge Gun since Wang and the clan did the Ninja Nerf on them recently. He has HW SS at lvl 3 but Nothing past 299 registers any damage. Just some extra love from CCP/Shanghai for FG users. Or typical programming skill more likely.

Alright did a new fit for that Just for that really small skirmish map.. Almost better to use a 118m range Assault Rifle than a Sniper Rifle. Which I shall train up next.... Until then using a standard Tactical sniper rifle, added extra light damage mods , with a decent sidearm, greatly boosted armored defense , and a couple of grenades. (Obviously Assault Suit)
Curious to see how that goes, on the can't run, can't hide maps |
