I'm using my VK.0 just because of the price difference. To be honest, My Vk.1 which is stacked with shields drops a lot faster than VK.0 which is armor tanked.
My core skills are pretty mediocre at the moment, that coupled with my feeling of invincibility to take on 3 guys by myself and being a priority target for some of you douchebags may be the reason I feel so gimped at the moment while wearing these things.

I cant count how many times I've baited players in proto gear to blindly run round corners into a nicely cooked grenade. Always very satisfying
Haha, looking back on my play after reading this reallly shed some light on my playstyle. |

Clever marketing by CCP blinded you!! An A-series with the correct level of core skills and good modules will almost always put you on your ass.
If, however, you have spent all that SP getting to the top tier suits and not concentrated on every other ESSENTIAL skill required to play this game, then you are so frickin lucky with the inbound SP respecing that CCP are being kind enough to offer foolish mercs.
I'm the foolish merc who spent all his SP into Protosuits and weapons! Thanks for the respec CCP |

Assuming assault, you should be well into sharpshooter and weapon proficiencies with shield control before going proto. |

It's also important to understand the actual advantages improved suits offer. It's more about being able to get away from bad fights than automatically winning fights. |

If you are the only one running it you will be a big target for people. I find b-series is better than the vk1 if I'm the only one running. If I'm with a squad or other randoms with proto it takes the target off and then I find I take way less fire than if I was the only one. |

There are a few points to keep in mind with Protosuits. They've been (mostly) covered already, but have a compiled list:
1. Many players preferentially target Protosuits. Unless there are several Protos on your team, you WILL be a priority target just by wearing it. People want to see your death. This is partly because they know Proto gear is expensive and they're costing you a lot of money, and partly because we're all sadistic little kittens. The fact that your death improves the team's situation more than a Militia guy's death is just an added bonus. Another point is that the "pot" earned by players for participation in the battle is partly based on the ISK value of gear called in. Killing a Protosuit frequently means another one will be called in straight away, which in turn means that profit margins go up for everyone involved in the battle (except the guy losing his Protosuit, obviously).
2. Protosuits aren't invincible. The players who make Protosuits look invulnerable can make Advanced gear look almost indestructible as well.
3. Many Proto players unconsciously try and take on worse odds than their suit can actually handle, throwing themselves into suicide attacks because "it's ok, my protosuit can handle it". I've seen Prototype Assaults rush at me with my Militia Shotgun because even though it's a Shotgun, and even though they know I'll be waiting RIGHT THERE as they turn the corner, they somehow think it's going to be fine to run right after me. Usually, I kill them for that mistake, and even if they do take me down, they lose all their shields and most of their armour, making themselves an easy target for my squadmates. |

1. Well said, I get primaried allot in my B-type proto and eventually after a horde of lemmings comes at me, my shields & armor fails, if i have allot of cover i can take up to 8 buggers with me, but i will die at some point if i dont retreat. (witch i don't do a whole lot sadly, i know its a work in progress)
2. I died less in my advanced B suit actually, had been using it for a month so i know what i can do with it, with the proto that extra shield extender or armor plate really is not woth the added 70k ISK the suit costs, the PG & CPU however is why i use it.
3. Oh hell no, shotguns if i am not the one using it, i get teh f*ck out of dodge fast, i know i said i don't retreat but for shotguns i make an exception, though its a backpeddle while trying to keep distance while i kill you kinda retreat.

Typically, when I see a proto suit wandering around alone, I let the entire team know. Some avoid the area entirely and attack a different objective but most will wander over and feed the proto until he gets suicidally overconfident... or sniped. Sniped works too. |

The Shotgun was an obvious example I see a lot, not something ALL Proto players do. Good players are aware of their vulnerabilities, and know how to compensate for them. |

I have been running my PS3 in 576p the last month up to yesteday (deleted everything, formatted it and reinstalled dust, runs flawlesly now), i had horrible 1 picture per second FPS issues when running in 720 or higher and it is not obvious what people are equiped with in that crap-tastic 576 resolution, but once i know ill "try" to avoid close encounters.
But like i said, i have issues with retreating, wich you should know :)
but yeah i still do derp-moves in 720 though like Brain: DON'T PEAK AROUND THAT CORNER..hes got a shotgun!! Me: Derp i got a Duvolle... "does it anyway" "Takes shotgun to the face" /dies horrible
Brain: Retreat man, theres 6 of em comming Me: Meh i can take em, did it before... "Grenade lands in front of feet" "Feet don't feel like moving" "Mouth moves a whole lot screaming: FUUUU" /dies in a blast of glory
Brain: TANK on the Right!!! Me: On it! Brain: You What!!! I said TANK!! Me: ow Tank ...right... "Press X to respawn"
Brain: Viziam Face Shaver right in front on that hill, you can't hit it from here Me: Bask in my superiour AIMING Brain! "Press X to respawn" Me: well at least i don't need to shave today... "Brain Leaves" /Tries to take Viziam again without Brain...

Assault though but yeah...
Had one guy do that 3 times in a "if not for him" flawless match, i stopped doing anything else, went up to his roof, killed him, killed all his buddies (6 total campers) and while i was killing them, one of them derped and rezzed him in front of my duvolle going at 12 rounds per second and he died again.
Well worth 3 protos for that scenario to play out :p
But yeah when a wild forge gunner appears and one shots, i always roll my eyes /sigh.. |

Like others said, I know at least that in the back of my head that it costs me more running around in a proto so maybe I try to play it more "safe" - which in reality means that I get killed more as other times I might have tried to engage first instead of taking cover, and as such die trying to save myself.
But at the same time I don't care about losing the ISK/AUR because I'm having so much fun, but might be there somewhere in the back, altering my style.
