Marksman is a combination of the Sniper and Frontline roles. A Marksman is as effective at close range urban combat as they are at long range sniping from the hills. This is achieved through training of sidearm skills and mastering the quick aim technique for mid range sniper riffle operation.
Minimum Skills Requirements: Sniper Riffle Operation Level 3 (Mandatary), Level 5 (Highly recommenced.) SMG or Scrambler Pistil Operation 5 (Mandatory), Proficiency 2 (Recommended.) Shield & Armour: A Marksman has the same shield and armour requirements as any other Frontline solder.
Dropsuit: Assault suit is the only appropriate suit for a Marksman. Warring a Scout suit with this skill set makes you more of a Sniper/Scout hybrid (Any name suggestions?). The Logi suit does not have a sidearm slot.
Quick Aim Technique: The key to mid rang sniping is the quick aim technique. This means aiming before you bring up your scope so that when your scope comes up your target is nearly lined up already. This is important because your tracking when aiming through the scope is slow! This precision is important when shooting at extreme ranges, but at mid range if you go up against an assault rifle, and your target is not nearly centred when your bring up your site, they will kill you before you line up your shot.
Quick Aim Practice: The best way to practice this technique is actually to use an Assault Riffle. It is less disorienting. Do some matches using the free Frontline fit and try to Aim Down Sites (ADS) as much as possible. Practice lining up your shot using the circle for a hip shot, then switch to the iron sites before firing. Get used to dropping out of ADS mode to acquire a new target, or if your target moves too far, then switching back to ADS when you have them lined up. Once you get used to it on the Assault Riffle, switch back to the Sniper Riffle for a few matches. With the Sniper Riffle there is no circle to aim with when you donGÇÖt have the scope up, so just do your best to put your target in the centre of your screen before you bring the scope up.
Stance: Although sometimes on the front lines you will have the luxury of being able to crouch and fire from cover, you will often have to fire while standing, whether it is to fire over high cover or because a Red comes around the corner unexpectedly. With Sniper Rifle Operation at Level 3 you can aim while standing at mid range, but you will have to line up your shot quickly or time your shot with your riffle sway. It is highly recommended that you max out the Sniper Riffle Operation skill. If you can fire from a standing position you can stop, line up your shot, fire, and move on much faster than if you have to crouch to fire. You will also be less susceptible to snipers. By this point you should know for yourself that the easiest target is a crouched sniper.
Sidearm: Your effectiveness with a sidearm is what makes you a Marksman, rather than just a Sniper running with your squad. You need to have enough confidence in your sidearm to go head to head with an assault rifle at close range and expect to win. DonGÇÖt use ADS on your sidearm in Close Quarter Combat (CQC). You donGÇÖt track fast enough in ADS mode if your target is strafing. Only use ADS in mid range or if you are trying to hit a stationary target such as an enemy Drop Uplink. Try to get used to strafing side to side while firing in very close range, but donGÇÖt just spray and pray. Aim while you are moving with the SMG, or between shots with the Scrambler Pistil.
Where you Operate: The short answer is GÇ£everywhereGÇ¥. You have the sniper skills to be up in the hills pinning the enemy down while your squad advances, or taking out snipers who are trying to pin your squad down. You have the short range skills and defences to take or defend objectives. You can run with your squad surpassing the short and long range capabilities of an assault rifle, while holding your own in the mid range due to mastering the quick aim technique. When running with your squad, sticking to cover a little behind the rest of your squad will put you in position to head shot reds with assault rifles as they step our from cover to fire a burst at your squad.
Quick Change, The Right Weapon for the Job: A light tap on R2 will switch between you Sniper Rifle and your Sidearm. Practice this. When Reds are advancing and you are getting exited, it is hard to keep your tap light, so practice quickly picking your weapon from the equipment wheel as well. If you body shot the Red charging at you with your Sniper Riffle you want to be able to seamlessly switch to your sidearm to finish them off as they reach close range. Remember your Primary weapon depends on range. At long range your Primary weapon is your Sniper Rifle. At short range your Primary weapon is your sidearm. At mid range your primary weapon depends on which weapon you have out, and weather your target is already shooting at you.
Equipment: Equipment depends on the situation, and on what equipment the rest of your squad has. Have fits for each type of equipment you may want to use. If your squad already has an Uplink and Nano Hive you may want to take a Nanite Injector to be a backup medic. If you are running separate from your squad, or your squad does not already have one, take an Uplink. If Uplinks are already placed, take a Nano Hive. A source of Ammo is always helpful. |

Edit: Just to elaborate, there is not much difference in play style between an Assault Suit Sniper and a Scout Suit Sniper up in the hills, but down in the thick of things the Assault Suit can use a more direct approach, while the Scout Suit will have to relay more on stealth and agility. Edit 2: I initially miss read your post, but my responses are informative so I will leave them.

I, as you know, Fox, run my Scout in this manner.
I have taken to calling it a 'Saboteur' role, as it is best utilized by hacking installations and turrets, effectively sabotaging the enemies combat efforts :) |

My friends and I reffer to this role as counter sniper, typically its either a scout or an assualt with tactical AR, or Tactical sniper. They will run with the squad, provide midrange sniper support while maintaining pressure on opposing snipers. There are only 2 downsides i see with this sort of role, the first being that you die more. I see this being balanced out by staying with a squad, you get more WP beacuse you are in range of squad orders, and you will most likley have someone a nanite injector who can pick you back up. The second downside I see is purely logistical, and that is a lack of over watch. A good traditional sniper not only rakes in alot of kills with few clones used, but provides overwatch, passing along vital info through comms. Information is power, also not somthing dicatated by how much SP you have. I'm not sure what can be done to make up for a lack of intel but hopefully the active scanner, and other such goodies comming in Uprisisng should help create a smarter battlefield environment.
Edit: I just wanted to add that Laser Rifles can also be used for a good marksman. |

Good advice, I have been running VERY similar to this load-out but I am using the blue scout dropsuits.
You are right in your assessment that at close to mid range the scout suits are just too light. I have been running/advancing in the saboteur role with SMG ready to go and hacking behind enemy lines as it's a good way to keep your WP up but, the role is great for getting in mid-range placement behind enemy lines to snipe out when squad advances are on. That's until about 3 kills then REDS catch on and come in droves to hunt you down. Then again your squadies then have the advantage of a distracted enemy who are essentially routed.
There is also a lot of ill-feeling towards pure sniper roles at the moment, when a good sniper comes in with Mic and passes on RED movements that's when they are worth their weight, not many of those though.

This is so weird, I actually recently posted a WIP Fitting Guide on the 'BSoTT' forums for the 'Marksman'... Of course, mine involved a Scrambler Rifle, TAC-AR, and Burst-AR. :P
Good stuff though! Love me some short/mid-range SR frontlining! :D

Flaylock pistol is definitely a good sidearm for this role. Actually I created my scout as a shotgun/flaylock combo, but realized that I was doing all my short range attacking with the flaylock so swapped the shotgun for a sniper and it's amazing. Very versatile role. |

Newbie, but I play long range sniper. Covenant Armor, damping module, tactical sniper rifle and hive.
I don't want to bore you with what I do, but some tips in this.
1. Always try to get the high ground overlooking multiple choke points, or areas where the enemy will frequently hack. I always try to have high enough ground to take out other snipers. having a clear line of sight to a hack point is like shooting fish in a barrel.
2. Do not attempt to aim directly at the target, or try to follow the target. Instead I try to anticipate where they will be in 1-2 seconds and move the sight to that location. Soon as they walk by I hit them.
3. Act as support role where possible. It's fun killing from a distance, but it's no fun for those protecting a hack point trying to keep off a group. I normally try to strip shields and move to another enemy in the group and repeat. The team on the ground then can rip them up with relative ease.
4. Do not stay in the same place for the whole time. Especially if you are killed do not go back to that spot. Normally you will know when it is time to move on. If you see people you have killed moving from cover to cover and trying to find you.
5. Also watch for team dynamics in the enemy. For example. I killed 3 of 5 enemy protecting a hack point. When they respawned, they all took cover in various points around the hack point. At first I thought they were being silly as some were clearly in the line of fire. But they instead used who I was shooting to determine my location. After I hit the second guy they all came after me.
6. Newbie car drivers I find if you hit them with a shot in the backside as they are heading for a mission point, they will turn the car around looking for who shot them. Helps waste time for them.
7. Always crouch, and always have most of your body hidden by the terrain. |

All good advice Mirazen, but probably more appropriate for my Sniper Guide. There is a link to it in the first line of this guide.
I will have to try distracting Murder Taxies next time I Snipe. If they stop for a moment you can actually head shot the driver and kill him without damaging the LAV. |

I made an alt just to try out the charge rifle and without even trying I found myself playing the "Marksman" and doing quit well. I am a threat to shotgunners and even sentinels lol. I have no skills in anything other than my sniper rifle so the fact that I'm doing good now tells me that I could actually make this a full time thing... at least with this alt.
This play style is known in CoD as "Quick Scoping". Those that trained in this play style will find it much easier to learn especially when using the "Duty Calls" control scheme. Because of this practice it came natural to me the first time I found myself in a mid-range fight. I quick scoped the guy, switched to my SMG and continued to lower his health. He then backed off to get out of my effective range after witch I switched back to my SR and finished him off.
This play style relies quite a bit on muscle memory so keep practicing and you'll find it comes as natural as firing an AR. +1 for the guid

You are right that this play style requires practice. I play several roles which use the SMG, and I went back to playing Overwatch Sniper for a few weeks last month, so I am good in close quarters and at counter sniping, but I have gotten rusty at quick scoping for mid range combat with the sniper rifle. When I originally wrote the guide I was fairly good at it, but that was back in the open bata when I was running Marksman all the time. I keep the guide up to date with patch changes, but it would take a few weeks of practice for me to get good at it again.
It seems like every time I write a guide, I start doing something different immediately after. At least it makes for a nice variety of guides.

I'm not so sure about other snipers, but I find it too hard to use the sniper rifle in most mid-close range conflicts on most maps. The controls are not fast enough and the scope is too focused for me to make it work. (I use a PS3 controller instead of the mouse/keyboard or PSMove)
I have moved on to Gorilla "Sniping" with the scrambler rifle. I charge it up like the charged sniper, pop out, and fire destroying the red berry's shields then swap for the SMG to finish. I change to keep from overheating the scrambler rifle since not only is the feedback damage a lot, but the overheat animation stops you from using anything for a few seconds so you are an open target . With the scrambler rifle it only takes a few rounds to fire the charged bullet. This means I can switch back if the enemy moves outside of the effective range for the SMG. I prefer this weapon choice over using the actual sniper rifles when close or in tight spaces since it leaves me a larger field of view and I have a viable weapon if I am suddenly ambushed from around a corner.

If you are having issues at mid close range, close the distance and use a sidearm or if you use a logibro suit other than amarr, use the butt or your SR to take out the enemy. Dodging around and bashing him in the head does work quite well and can conserve precious bullets. This is *very* effective in cities as well as at objectives outside cities. |
