Defiance isnt that much of a threat. CCPs only real enemy right now is CCP. People are just tired of being jerked around with a promise to give you a promise about a tease in the future.
While the DEV Blog about the new build was pretty cool and something Im looking forward to, the announcement about an announcement at Fanfest irked me.
CCPs marketing department is a joke if they are using these tactics to get people interested. And this is coming someone who has a masters degree in marketing. Even the new guys who started after the open beta are already tired of SOONGäó.
Even Sony has been better about hyping up the new PS4. Yeah, it might not drop till winter 2013 but they know how to do the slow play. They announced that its coming with a general time frame and gave you enough teaser information to make you excited. They also have planned out how and when they will release all of the other information about the system.
Look at how movies do it. They announce the general date of release about 4-6 months in advance with a small teaser of what is coming. Then, as you get closer to release, they being to solidify the date as well as give more and more information about what is coming. This has been a tried and true method to getting people hyped up about a release. Now compare that to what the braintrust at CCP marketing have done... |

I'm positive in a year or twos time this game will be awsome but I'm afired by that point it will be too late. They can't treat this game like EvE the markets are very diffrent to how eve was when it started they won't have a core base of players to build off if they keep fumbling along like they are.... Others. Companys are fair better at their phases. If dust had kept the NDA shield people are far more forgiving but this is been treated as a finished product and even as a free game its sub par as shown by Sony lack of intrest in promoting the game I know its hard to belive in that ccp has the best desires for dust to succeede to the point it is a passion. Right now a few teams from eve online are helping with system design. For example plaetary conquest was an eve team feature. Version 0.8 has many many things inbound because all the things ccp was unable to test on the test severs are no longer affected. They have been furoisly mad logging all the stresses the game has had on ccp's tranqulility severs. While I have to agree at this time dust could be better and the lack of upcomming updates is leaving more questions than I could safely answer. (though devs talking to is at an all time high) . Time is their enemy as in they do not have enough of it. If you saw that skybox that we are not supposed to see yet you can get a somewat better appreciation for the game as that sky box is near final asset.
Its not the DEVs that people have issues with, its the marketing team. The DEV team has been quite active on the forums and relaying information that they are allowed to give out. On the other hand, the marketing of this game has been awful at best. SOONGäó has been the biggest botch in customer communication in a long time. Its the proverbial carrot dangling in front of you that you will never get.
Hell, even if they said that the next build would be an April/May timeframe, people would at least calm down a little since they know it will come in a certain slot. God help CCP if they announce a Summer launch for the build at Fanfest because you will see people walk away in droves as they are already tired of the vague hype.

I fully agree its marketing's fault but they're only doing it to get money for the company... There is still a faction warfare update on the way though, blog should be out in the month along with possible other blogs such as the map guys doing a blog on game types and going beyond the clone out and launcher games, and they will hit lightly on map design during that.
The problem is that once you put money into the equation, you have to realize that the situation has completely changed. You are now responsible for delivering a product that people are paying for. CCP needs to realize that most players are not buying Merc Packs or AUR for the game as it is now, they are investing in what they hope that the game will become. The more disenfranchised people become as to when that date will be, the less they are willing to invest and the more bitter they will become that they put money into promises that always just seem to be on the horizon.
Look at what you posted. Its all about blogs that should be coming out promising things that will be out at another time. Its just more teases to promises about dates. Im not faulting you or the DEV team about this as its obvious that you cannot release information without the marketing seal of approval, but it is just the same ol same ol as far as players are concerned. |

0.7 was promised to be a stability build, Devs championed it as a fix build and everyone that was mostly in the know in knew it was a fix build and a non content build.
0.8 is promised to be a major massive content build more so than most of the previous builds combined. From the things I have been seeing so far. Its going to deliver at least something, it wont be an empty build that 0.7 was I can grantee that. I would like to say though that in the future updates similar to 0.7 that is all fixes and no content are likely to happen again. While you will celebrate it for the first week, its benifits get quickly forgotten. Please stop proving marketing right on this aspect the fix patches do not draw in newer players like a new feature build does.
Considering I AM marketing, that would be a very hard thing for me to do. Why do you think the common wisdom is to never buy the first year a new car model is out? Everybody knows that there are going to be glitches with it and yet.... people still buy it. Do you know why car companies continue to do this? Because they know through research what consumers' trade offs are and what they value more. What is failing here is that there are no breadcrumbs leading to the next build. There is nothing small to tide people over and keep their appetite for the major changes.
Look at the forums... look at how many people have stated that they are bored with the game right now. How many complaint threads are there about AFK farmers only to have said people come on and say that "Im only doing this because it is in hope that something will change in the near future. Otherwise I would be gone"
IF you invest too much time in the big picture, you will fail to see the ground eroding below your feet. People are crying for something, a new game mode or even just a new map to play on and they are being treated to lip service about being impatient and its just around that next corner.
I feel like Im being led into the desert and hoping to god that CCP is Moses and not some crackpot with sunstroke.

Iron Wolf Saber wrote:On the flip side problems and issues create a bad stigma over time and eventually while you may not get as many new players as new shiney features they can easily still just as leave if the game was still having an appox 25% fail to battle rate.
That is the reason why you have to ask them what they want and continue to do so as a way to gauge the route that you take for future updates. Im not talking about something on this forum because people will always want 'everything'.
In marketing research, its called a trade-off analysis. You use it to gauge what is ultimately more important to your customers rather than doing the worst thing possible and assuming what the answer is. If you couple that with a conjoint analysis (which group of features people want most and what they are willing to 'pay' for it) then you have a very good idea of the direction you wish to take.
As far as stability versus content, again, all you need to do is look at the forum. People are complaining about both. People are complaining about the matchmaking process, excessive lag on a 'certain map' that bleeds out memory, problems with hit detection or issues with some skills and even bugs that cause hard restarts which can damage consoles.
Again, its not the issue of what the DEVs are doing but this inability for CCP to ever put a date on anything. Its like they are afraid that people are going to make them accountable to it. Funny thing is, when they started introducing real money to the game, they became automatically accountable. |

Hopefully they'll announce something like "New build out today!" but you can be sure they won't be announcing "New build out last week!" you could be right, but at the same time CCP could release it a week before fanfest and then talk about how great dust is going to be using the new build as an example at fanfest. To me.... Fanfest should be a time for CCP to actually start selling the idea of dust to the eve community. Too many eve players go on saying stuff like "what does dust mean to me?" "whats the point in caring about it if it doesn't benefit me?" well..... hopefully the new build will open the way to more interaction between us and eve players, and therefore create a great selling point for CCP to capitolize on and build up some hype about the game!
FoxFour already stated that the new build will be announced at Fanfest. Of course that could change but its the party line for now. |

BTW Wolf - I would like to say thanks for the intelligent and non-PR slanted conversation. Not once have I seen you blow things out of proportion or treat any of this as a personal attack. So, cheers to you. |
