This is slightly different from the other thread which speculates about who specifically should be on the first council, and is more a thread to get a feel for what kind of players do you the forum community think would 1) do best on the council and 2) best serve the community by attempting to improve the game? (Notice these two things are neither tied together nor are they mutually exclusive. I'm not looking for names, though you may feel free to toss them out, but rather on the breed of player.
For example, the no-holds barred, gruff FPS vet who tells it like it is in their harsh, yet honest way? Or how about the idealist who focuses on the potential of the game limited only by our imaginations and CCP's programmers? Or the slick politico who knows how to get what they want? These are nowhere near all the types of players we have, but a small stereotypical pool of examples to get your brain thinking. |

I would say all of the above as a requirement for each candidate.
In the Eve CSM, every candidate specializes in a specific role and profession but it still responsible knowing everything else about Eve Online and its intricacies as well as the political and economic aspect of it. This way, everyone in the council can contribute to a topic discussed while avoiding any ideas that can potentially harm the game.
I expect the same for each and every Dust candidate. Every candidate should know everything and anything about Dust. If you are specialized in corp management, you can stick to that topic to drive your point, but you are expected to know everything else as well including economics, assault rifles, scouts, etc. so that you have something to contribute.
Don't know anything about New Eden economics? Don't know anything about Scouts, Heavies, Logis or Assaults? Sorry, no vote for that person. |

Agree on all said but one thing. Prior knowledge to New Eden economics, mainly b/c that eliminates the console players that dont play EvE. Yes if they have some idea good, but ability to learn should be allowed as well, as there are probably people who only play Dust that dont play EvE that would make great CSMs (dust side).
But yes, knowing how suits, weapons, maps all "work" is something that is highly necessary for being one the war council |

Well, the whole knowing the economy will come with the release of the game. It will be something that people will have to study and get to know, but there will be players out there who will catch on real quick. I think that initially, this should not be a requirement, but after the WC is in full swing, they should have knowledge of every aspect of Dust. Even if you don't play the market yourself, you can talk to people who do and get a good feel for how it works(nothing beats practical experience though). |

Breadth of knowledge and specialisations are not that important in my mind. What we need are people who think about things in a certain way - analytical minds. The people who will take the plans that CCP give to them and then pick them apart to death (like some of us did with the Planetary Conquest thread). These will also likely be the most impartial players, as they look at how changes will affect the entire system, rather than just specific areas, particularly with regards to balance.
A solid showing of commitment, understanding and tolerance of others are also of huge importance in every candidate. |

Having seen the type of discussions I fear people will try promoting KDR carebears, with no understanding of what makes EVE to the game it is.
'This guy ran a tournament' or 'CEO of *big corp*' and such hardly qualifies someone to be able to predict how game mechanics will facilitate the creation of an EVE-style dynamic sandbox game. |

Why can't a "console" player be considered?
Surely dust is mainly for console players, not just for eve players who have decided to slum it on a ps3.
It's A bit narrow minded to rule them out because they have no background in eve.
I'm sure they can learn about eve, their proberly doing it as we speak.
I'd personally like to have someone with a similar background to myself on the board to represent the fps fans who haven't got a history In eve. The average blue collared clone..

Lol but its only eve, not brain surgery.
Going by your logic everyone on the eve cms should have detailed knowledge of the inner workings of dust but I'm sure they don't.
Not everyone.needs detailed knowledge of eve. Like I said, I want someone in it who represents the MAJORITY of players in dust.

I agree. As far as I'm concerned nobody, on any council, represents me unless it's thanks to a vote. If CCP want to select advisers from the community based on merit then that is fine and completely their prerogative, but no one gets to say they represent my concerns unless I had a say in them taking up that position. Furthermore I don't think anyone can rightly say they represent the community unless the community actually chose them for that role. |

I would like to see a council based on Technocrats and people who specialize in each different aspect of Dust 514. Depending on your role in Dust you see the game in a different light, and I think that carries weight in these discussions.
People who should make up the Council:
Someone specialized into infantry combat
Someone specialized into Anti Vehicle
Someone specialized into Logi Bro
Someone specialized into Vehicles
Someone who has experience with Large Corp Management
Someone who has experience with Eve
etc.... I am sure there is more
IMO in order for this council to work every aspect of Dust needs to be represented |

This could be good but I'd say these would be sub-officers from the council; like experts brought in on particular discussions to help but not on the top level. The top level of the council should be impartial and balanced players without any agenda towards a particular play style. |

I disagree I think its that drive and competition between the different play styles are whats going to make the game balanced. Competition in my Opinion is always a good thing. Furthermore, I really do not want a jack of all trades, master of none making decisions about my specific role. I would personally feel much better if I knew someone with the sole interest of infantry combat was on the council to defend and protect my role

I'm not sure that the initial council needs to be so focused on things like infantry tactics and the like.
To my mind, the very first council needs to be people who can demonstrate two things:
- Ability to offer fair solutions to tricky problems (like voting & representation) - Desire to see Dust 514 succeed as a community-driven sandbox game
At this juncture, these are the core issues that this first War Council needs to be focused on, i.e.- how to make the second War Council fairly elected and representative; and, how to keep people interested in the game long enough for it to make it out of beta with a good player base. |

You bring up a good point Vaerana. I wasn't very clear about my poll. After the initial WC sets up rules for succession etc and gets things off the ground, my poll is more about subsequent members in the long term. |

Ah... Sorry.
In that case, I suggest a few different things:
Identified Representation Firstly, some system of identified representation. One of the big problems with the CSM is that it is neigh impossible for the majority of players to be represented as the big alliances can Get Out The Vote and no one else can. It's quite rare to see an indentified "Carebear" rep, for instance. This is the whole "money in politics" problem all over again, except here the money is ISK and it's about defending Technetium subsidies instead of Oil and Corn.
Here are the different player groups that I see needing different things:
Major League - Big Corps/Alliances that own planets Minor League - Small Corps/Alliances that own some districts College League - People who don't own districts but want to own some Varsity League - New Players (& Newbie Corps) and Non-PCers
Notice that I left out FPS, as this is a given- everybody wants a fun FPS, the difference is in play style and learning curve. The Major Leaguers want new challenges while not threatening their current holdings. The Minor Leaguers want better ways to compete with the Major Leagues. The College Leagues want a way to get their foot in the door. The Varsity League wants the game to be more fun at a basic level and more user-friendly for those who want to get into the College League action.
So, I propose that future WC candidates should be from and run to represent one of these groups. If we put two reps from each group, that would give us 8, which will lead to a lot of tie votes, so I'd give one extra to the College Leagues, as they are most likely to shake up the status quo.
Demonstrated Experience By this, I'm not talking about KDR or WP or whatnot. What I mean is that candidates should campaign on their familiarity with the player group they are trying to represent. For instance, a Major League candidate should talk about their leadership of a major alliance and experience with interplanetary warfare and economics. A Minor Leaguer might campaign on similar experience, but with a focus on their understanding of what it's like to scratch a living in high-conflict space. College Leaguers could campaign on all of the horrid ways that the big leagues (Major & Minor) are keeping down everyone else and talk about their personal first-hand experience of this. Someone from the Varsity League would likely discuss their long record of helping new players learn the game and talk about the special challenges facing those players.
Creative Solutions Anyone who is trying to represent players to CCP is going to find themselves faced with very vexing questions. For instance, how do we fairly add more planets for PC without giving them all to the Major Leagues or running out of College League corps?
Candidates should campaign based on their history of reasonable suggestions and ideas, especially ones that have been implemented by CCP in the past.
Fairness & Humility Well, fairness at least. I'm not sure there is enough humility in video gaming to staff the War Council.
Seriously, though, it is vitally important for candidates to demonstrate an ability to impartially make decisions and recommendations- especially ones that are personally damaging. Candidates should be able to campaign based on sacrifices that they've had their characters or corporations make to improve the fairness and/or enjoyability of the game for others. |
