Occasionally my PS3 would go into Loud Fan Mode. The only way to get the fan to shut off was to exit DUST514. It was a rare occurrence.
Since the disastrous release/hot fix/whatever on Mar 14, 2013 it is happening on nearly every map and battle. I did some research the last time this happened and it would appear your team has a Runaway Thread on at least one of the SPEs. This eventually will cause it to heat up such that the fans will be required to turn on and run full speed.
My PS3 is the 2 USB Fat version which is louder than the modern Slims (any version) but your very special talents have managed to accomplish something that no other game in my entire, although limited, PS3 library can do. Technically the model should make little to no difference for this situation.
The Fan is howling behind me right now. I started typing this report to give it a chance to cool down.
Possibly one might look into it. As I have yet to experience the Black Screen Hot Fix it might not be connected. I realize the Black Screen Hot Fix is more important but Threads that are no longer under your control would seem important to some Software Developers, even retired ones.
Still Howling. |

This is KR's alt. I restarted DUST and used this character. The howling started again soon after.
However, once a match started the Howling Fans left for a different engagement. Apparently the re-initialization that occurs when entering the War Barge cleared your Run Away Thread.
Ya might look into it. |

I also posted about this games unique ability to make my PS3 fan go wild.. WIth me.. it would literally start the fan from the very first opening "move controller" screen.. and its the only game that does that..
I should find my thread and let peeps know that I fixed it.. Someone posted a Utube video that shows you how to rebuild the file system on PS3.. It seemed to have worked instantly..

We have made this observation about a squadmates playstation the past week or 2. We can hear his playstation attempting to blast-off through his bluetooth.
The real question is what is the risk of us causing damage to our playstation by playing this game currently? Granted we are not on a death-box 360 that is super prone to system failure from overheating, but the yellow ring of death does occur. |

From what I've been told by techs, the temperature sensor on the PS3 is connected to the heat sink. I found out about this after I got mine repaired and they put in new and better heat transfer pads. I'd never heard my fan wind up so loud before and it worried me until I made a call or two. And after checking it out, yes. My PS3 does run cooler if a bit louder at times.
With that info... Consider that if you have the original heat pads, your GPU is getting really hot so that enough of the heat is starting to get to where it should have been going in the first place. Your fan is probably working at about 60% load if the nearly vacuum cleaner level, stage three reinforced cooling, sound I get from mine on occasion is any indication.
Also, a lot of the older PS3s, not sure about the newer ones, were soldered with a more environmentally friendly lead free solder. This lead free solder has a lower melting point and is more prone to fracturing from the heating and cooling of use. Having your PS3 standing on end may also promote this fracturing and increases the likely hood of thermal failure.
So the fan kicking up to cool your system is good. However, the heat transfer of your current thermal pads may not be good.
This is merely an informed guess on my part. Your problem could be entirely different. |

Here there CCP/Shanghai. Nice to check in from time to time. Although it would be better to tell you that I have Not had repeated events related to the Runaway Thread/Task in DUST on the PS3.
Further investigation shows the condition is pretty close to what I originally proposed. Specifically a Thread/Task, probably running on one of the SPEs, is stuck in a loop. At the very least it is not exiting its heavy processing loop causing the PS3 to heat up.
Multiple situations have occurred and I can verify the symptoms hopefully assisting you with finding and fixing the issue.
If the game is generates an intense fire fight, possibly at anytime during the game, a task starts driving the temperature higher. The temperature sensors causes the PS3 to ramp up the fan speed. The fan speed never slows down again contrary with my experiences with nearly three dozen other games on this PS3. Those that cause the PS3 to spin them up will cease the activity that caused the speed increase and the fans will slow back down to normal speeds. I have indeed verified this is still the case. Dropping back to menu selections or character/skill menus will cause the fans to slow very quickly.
DUST however will continue driving the fans at high speed. Occasionally getting into the War Barge will cause the fans to immediately return to normal speed and sound level.
Today, 0400 GMT Mar 27 after exiting a match at Manus Peak that was intense in the last quarter but settled out to wait the obvious ending the fans speed up.
Exiting the rewards/results screens into Quarters did not slow them down. I waited several minutes then re-entered a match through the battle finder. The fans did not shut down.
As soon as I exited DUST the fans [u]Immediately[u] returned to normal speed.
The additional research I have done did not reveal if Sony has access to the fan settings from within the Game OS. I would imagine it does. I do not know if you are using it or just allowing the PS3 to handle the fans on its own. That is the path I would take and suspect that many do regardless of what other functionality Sony provides.
The next time I get this to re-occur I will actually enter the battle and verify if it resets the threads as it has done in the past.
Hope this helps.

I have a PS3 slim version (bought it in 2011) and it too seems a bit louder than usual while playing DUST... Though i would not call that "howling"... It is certainly much quieter than a HTPC (DELL Optiplex 745 4GB RAM desktop specs with Radeon HD6570 specs) sitting next to it, i use to play EVE (in low/medium detail).
Kal, do you have an option to compare "game experience" with someone who owns same version of PS3 and in roughly same condition as yours? Maybe it is something with your machine as Shijima Kuraimaru suggested in post #5? PS3 has a known issue with solder cracking due to temperature and needs to be "reflown" from time to time to prevent YLOD. Thermal paste on GPU might change it's properties over time too. It is called "planned obsolescence"... So maybe it is not a bad idea to check your machine up in a service shop? Or just wait until Xmas for PS4
Or... maybe it works as intended? You know to remove dust partricles |

I already put in proper thermal paste as the factory installed was ... not well done shall we say. The unit has been solid as a rock and the Howling is not that big an issue to me during game play as I wear a headset.
The constant Drone when back in Quarters is irritating as it should not be doing that. Which I clearly demonstrated when entering the War Barge shut the Fans back to normal. That indicates to this software developer that the threads/tasks were reset to their default state and the runaway was shutdown which allows the fans to return to default immediately.
I have games that thrash my PS3 pretty hard yet after they do then it will drop right back to normal speed when the temperature drops. Either the temperature doesn't drop because of a runaway thread/task or DUST is forcing the fans to high (not likely but it might be possible). Obviously their QA doesn't drive the system hard enough or doesn't use a wide enough variety of PS3s to get to the corner cases. Which is why they have Beta testers in the first place.
Don't worry about it as this is just me pointing out to CCP/Shanghai that something is amiss that they should correct. |

Update to original Bug report.
The task/thread theory has game some traction personally for me this last few days (GMT Mar 31). When the fans are howling away doing their fan duty several actions can cause them to return to normal immediately.
First, Exit Dust.
Second, Go directly into battle. Oddly enough, to me anyway, going to the Battle Finder first does not seem to do the trick. The unfortunate problem here is that entering the War Barge should clear the Threads/Tasks to their neutral state.
These indicate that the condition that clears the game engine entering the battle directly should be considered for exiting the battle as well. Under any condition as once cleared the PS3 operates normally.
Additionally it does make one wonder if the run away thread/task is affecting game play by removing resources better used by the actual engine during game play. This might be a factor regarding some of the choppiness in Skim Junction and its inner section that has been so problematic.
Good Luck, CCP/Shanghai. |
