Well yesterday the new dev blog got released with here and there some fancy informations. But i can read between the lines. We wont be aible to fight on Lava, Aqua, Burren desert, Gas or Ice Planets. Why? Well because of this:
Devblog wrote:Each temperate planet has between 5 and 24 districts. These serve as both the industrial backbone for your corporation, and the battlefields where you destroy anyone who interferes with your business.
We will fight only on temperate planets which is in my opinion kinda sad. I woulda had loved to fight on different planets. I simply blame the devs lazyness for this to create different looking battlefields. I will tell you how this is going to end up on EVE: Every eve player will find out which planets are temperate, reinforce them to the max so that they cant be taken and thats it. Usually each system in eve has 1-2 temperate planets and thats it. A system will fall with those few planets without counting in the others. Im dissapointed cause we probably could fight on the other hostile planets due to our dropsuit which allows us to survive in life threating enviroment. |

Temperate can be jungle, desert, ocean, whatever you want. And "laziness" (this is how you spell it) is probably due to the number of devs that they have compared to EVE team and not actually being lazy. Maps are not being made like in BF3 and COD but instead generated, so I am sure there is more complexity than just "throwing new plasma map out there"... |

they have said that they had done some in house testing of cloud cities (guessing gas planets, which I'm curious how we aren't instantly crushed under their gravity), but it was far from anything they would consider having yet. Just get the basic temp planets out there and see what bugs pop up, then add more types as time goes on. |

Why would we fight on a rock that is worth nothing, its all about the ISK and mining or proccessing lava, sea, sand is worth zilch and ice is taken care of in space by miners also some of the lesser moons are already mined by another sub type of eve system. Not to mention how hard it would be to work on them.
So yeah why would they add in planets that don't fit with the game universe?

Temperate planets are only for the beginning. Last fanfest they showed a lava planet screenshot, and they said eventually there will be battles on floating structures above gas giants, but said the PS3's hardware limit prevents them from being able to do it at the moment. You shouldn't accuse people of laziness until you know the amount of money, work, and resources goes into what they do. I want environmental variety, the lack of it makes me get bored of games really really fast (I'm very bored of Dust now, also because of lack of game modes), but I know I can't get everything I want all at once. That being said, Earth is a temperate planet, and look at all the variety of environments we have. There is so much potential in temperate planets alone. |

Your comment is very disappointing. 1) You're making excuses to limit the game's potential. 2) CCP already confirmed different exotic planet types are coming. 3) Just because a planet is covered in water or ice or molten lava does nor mean there is nothing valuable. I'm really curious how you came up with this conclusion, because it has zero basis in reality, or anything. An oceanic planet could have insanely rare and valuable minerals under its oceans, or a lava planet may be covered in volcanoes that constantly spew out precious minerals that formed in the mantle back up into the surface.
I'm really glad you're not a developer. |

CCP can't throw everything out at once. It's not like they have a magic dev team that can do everything on a whim. There needs to be planning, testing, evaluation and then deployment. Everyone needs to calm down and let them do what they do. I too would like to fight in exotic environments, but it just wont happen right off the bat. It is coming though. |

My view is based on if is profitable to mine or gather resources on a hostile enviroment, we as a human race arent mining mars or the moon yet, because it costs too much to do vs mining our own back yard.
same thing applies to dust, sure that lava planet in this system might contain "super Unobotium" and costs 3.000.000 ISK per kg mined because they need special gear and floating factories and then sells for 500.000 ISK a kg or they could set down on a normal planet where its cheaper (not needed to invest into special stuff) setup a drill to mine the resource and sell with profit.
Ill comply because you bring in the reality card for the water part.
In reality it is harder to get to the bottom of our sea (deepest parts) then it is to get into outer space, i guess heavy shields would help but it still depends on if you couldnt get the stuff cheaper on a temperate planet.
Like i said EVE is all about the ISK.

Last Fanfest, they mentionned possible new planet types for 2013. But as everything has been running about a 6 month late, i guess it will have to wait till 2014.
And i dont see what you mean with EVE plyaers reinforcing planets. The only action they can take regarding planetary conquest is Orbital Bombardment when called in. |

Basically, and taking this current open beta for example, I'll bet most players are more focused on testing out the game mechanics by playing the game as intended, rather thanGÇöfor instanceGÇödoing things like walking/jumping against every wall to see if they fall through or not.
Even if they did, far more might complain about one of the million colors used in the map's palette rather than catching and concisely/helpfully reporting the technical bugs encountered. |

So then what's the point of having bet testers if all we do is play the game as intended? Also you didn't answer what I said. What's the point of CCP inventing a cloud city and then not at least letting us play on it?

The environments they have RIGHT NOW are messed up.
Two out of Three times I get into a match on the Skim Junction map it has a memory leak and my FPS drops to nil. I have to restart DUST.
Why would I want them to bring in new environments when the ones they have introduced already make their game unplayable 2/3rds of the time.

Can i just point out
it costs $500,000 just to add a new char as DLC to a side scrolling 2d fighting game "
it is estimated that each marvel vs capcom hero cost $1 million US
so then you have to stop and think this is a 3d game the game is FTP -with the option to pay for more stuff but not every one will do that
they have to pay for the games servers they have to pay people working on other projects they have to pay the creators of dust
im sorry mum did not supply ccp with the millions needed to have a massive team of people working on the game just so it can meet YOUR release day and be on time and up to YOUR expectation's which have possible been set by the standards of other triple A games that already have millions in funding before they even consider making a game
even after all that you want then rushing to make new maps when they already have issues with the maps now ? like oh hey im walking up a hill
STRAIGHT THROUGH MY SHIELDS AND HALF MY ARMOUR that's fine let's just focus on maps these are issues that don't need to be focused on we clearly need to add more stuff and hope it does not make a bigger mess
(that is what i think every time i think ccp should add something to dust) and if you want water GO FOR A SWIM IN ONE OF THEM POOLS AND STAY DOWN THERE (yes there is water in dust and yes it does kill you) |

lol... Earth is a temperate planet and we have all of those (Desert, Jungle, Ice, Lava, Water, etc...). By temperate it just means that those planets aren't to close nor to far from a star: - too close, everything will melt -too far, everything would freeze and be in the darkness
so... 'temperate' is just for the storyline |

I respectfully say: That's utter nonsense.
Either you've been horribly mis-informed. Or your making that up.
Majority of the issues surrounding games devlopment is the price of manifacturing disks. If a company is telling you its more expensive to make DLC they are lying for one reason or another.
DLC is popular with companies because its cheaper than the phyisical production of disks and distribution.
How do you think the indie development scene came about on PSN and Xbox live? Because it costs $500,000 per download? I don't think so.

correction it cost the devs $150,000 to make the char
http://segmentnext.com/2013/02/26/skull-girls-needs-150000-from-kickstarter-for-dlc-character/ but i do specifically remember a journalist saying that it was estimated to cost 0.5mill - 1mill per char in marvel vs capcom
While $150,000 does seem like a lot of money for a single character to be added to the game, Lab Zero Games has broken down exactly where the finances go.
$48,000: Staff Salaries GÇô 8 people for 10 weeks $30,000: Animation and Clean-up Contracting $4,000: Voice recording $2,000: Hit-box Contracting $5,000: Audio Implementation Contracting $20,000: QA Testing $10,000: 1st Party Certification $10,500: IndieGoGo and Payment Processing Fees $20,500: Manufacturing and Shipping Physical Rewards

dude, they haven't added those seeds to the map generating system yet. This build is using an experitmental version of the map generator they have. In other words its several months old. The closest thing to it you see is the jagged edged map which rotates C and B from time to time.
CCP has said time and time again that there sticking with temperate planets initially because its very hard to code for less solid planets. They have said that they have concept designs for lava/cloud cities and all sorts of things like that. But we wont be seeing any of that for a while simply because they have stuff to prioritize over it. In the mean time they said they were going to be adding differn't types of enviroments to the temperate planets, jungle, icey, ocean ect.... ocean being the last because again... CCP has said its difficult to code for something like water and how it effects your suit.
So until then just let them do their work, were going to have over 7000 planets to start with, and the new build coming this april (i think) will provide us with more then enough stuff to do. |

About map generation: The "maps" we have at the moment are test beds... nothing more The hieght maps themselves are not randomly generated, they have to be crafted for the sake of good gameplay (they said so last Fanfest), the randomness comes from matching different surface infrastructure models into the sockets of the hieght maps, and applying different textures and moods on it. People are really overrstimating what the map generation actually does, it only works with assets already created by the devs. We need more height maps, and we needs more surface infrastructure (like outposts), we need more textures, and we need more sky moods. What we have now isn't enough for sufficient variety. I'm sure its coming, though. |

150,000 is more like it.
All the inhouse costs are debatable due to the fact all that equipment is a perminanet fixture (until it breaks or is replaced). The company had it anyway and wouldn't be able to trade without it, so I dunno if thats actually a cost for a specific download. More like a cost of running the business. Same a salaries.
This is the sort of stuff companies tend to release to try to win company sympathy when they actually might be charging a little too much for thier product. Sort of foot in the door technique. This new thing costs this. Sorry its so expensive but you know it did cost us this to make.

lol reinforce them how? they can't set up a POS over a planet or planet's districts, despite how crazy many eve players are they aren't going to blockade all the temperate planets for days on end with rolling picket fleets, you are worried over nothing players will react to events and seize opportunities for kills (for example blocking the routes to a group of stations where a new type of blue print has become available) but once the initial prized kills are had it will all be business as usual. |

I wouldn't expect any new planet types until 6 months after we go live. That was Laurino's original plan back at Fanfest - the first major expansion would have Lava planets, iirc.
My personal biggest disappointment with this announcement is not even a peep about core mechanics and controls.
Unkind things are being said about DUST's unfinished core mechanics/terrain/movement/controls on forums and review sites and it has been going on so long that a concensus opinion is forming among peeps who are interested in the DUST story but may not be playing the beta.
Ok, that's fine, it's a beta, but CCP themselves have said repeatedly they were going to stay laser-focused on core mechanics until the product could be compared to anything out there.
Perhaps there are core mechanincs/terrain/movement/controls improvements in the next build, I expect there are.
But the fact that CCP is changing their focus to shiny new content before the foundations are built leaves me with a queasy feeling and a sense of dread. I think concern is justified here because of the long track record CCP has with partially-finished rollouts. I do believe they've turned a corner but the truth is we've seen this behavior before.
The fatal detail is that you can't get away with partially finished core mechanics in an FPS. Maybe in some of the EVE code, but not here. |
