Turrets, particularly small turrets, have some rather crippling problems.
Let's start with blasters. Large blaster turrets are fine. I see no need to muck about here, but then I am talking to CCP. No telling what fuckery they will unleash in the future. Small blasters, however, are a bit of a joke. Rate of fire's fine. Range is ok. Heating is what I would expect. Damage is pointless. One of my corp mates (I forget which one) said he calculated out the damage output of a high end small blaster and said it was comparable to a militia assault rifle. Now, I did not verify this as I do not know how module and skill bonuses stack, but having used it on infantry, I can readily see it. Also, having used it on vehicles, I can tell you that you're kidding yourself. Just get out and use av grenades. It's a vehicle grade weapon, but it does a sorry excuse for damage. But, I'm sure I'm missing something.
Next, Rails. Large do great damage. I've been on the receiving end of it. I can verify this. Small rails, once more, are worthless. First, and fore most, heating. I get three shots off before the thing over heats. That's it. Next, the damage is a joke here as well. You can one shot pop infantry if you can score a hit. Structures and vehicles, however, you are again, useless. Even if you score a hit. That brings me to the projectile physics. They are kind of wacky. If the hard point your turret is on moves even the slightest bit, your shot is going almost horizontal to what you were aiming at. I don't know what the logic is behind the physics they used here, but I cannot see such a weapon being used in the real world, purely because of projectile behavior. Unless the platform is absolutely still, I mean utterly stationary, you're not shooting what you aimed at. Combine this with no splash damage (that I've seen) the abysmal damage against anything not infantry, and the really fast overheat, and there is no point to this module, except to take up space and cpu/pg.
Next, Missile turrets. I honestly don't have much experience with this. I've seen the large one used against infantry, though not to great effect. The small one suffers the most same problems: crap damage, no splash, debilitating projectile physics. The physics do seem slightly better, but only slightly, and it doesn't over heat. I've hit buildings and vehicles before, but, again, weak ass damage. I've yet to score a hit on infantry, though landed them close and seen no appreciable splash damage. Over all, they too seem kind of worthless.
So, my summation of small turrets is that they don't seem like they serve any purpose, other than to cost money, cpu and pg. Maybe I'm missing something, and I hope I am, but that seems to be the case.
Another thing I wanted to mention was making some sort of an owner-override that would allow him to kick a blue out of his tank, or at least the driver seat? I see too many blue berries run off with someone's 1mil iso tank and get it promptly blown up. |

quick question, did your friend take skills into account when he calculated the damage for small blasters, because you can get some ridiculous bonuses, also did he allow for the fact that turret skills stack? and what level of blaster turret was he working off?
And you're right small rails are useless. |

Turrets have a lot of progression between tiers and get bonuses from both the vehicle and turret operator. That means prototype turrets with skilled pilots and turret operators will be sort-of useful. But not in the same sense as other prototype equipment.
The main point I'd like to make though is that small turrets don't need a 50% buff but rather a 5% one. |

I honestly have no idea. I think I amditted it earlier, but I have zero turret skills. I know he runs a high end large blaster on his main fit, the sort that lets him take on other tanks like a beast and just generally beat the **** out anything that gets too close. His other fit runs high end blasters, and maybe it's 'cause I don't actually have skills, but I am not really impressed. I could do better getting out and taking them on with a sniper rifle at that range. |

Blasters are actually marvelous, their RoF (though Low Damage) is what kills, they have great DPS (If you're good)
Railguns have something broken about them. They're meant to be AV but have some cruddy damage reduction on vehicles that I'm still trying to figure out, they do less damage to vehicles than missiles!
Missiles are fine for the most part. Maybe radius needs to be tuned up and the wonky aim needs a fix. |

They travel the slowest, which makes them waaaay less accurate on the move and they have almost no splash damage. Missiles are the crummiest of them all. |

Well the only turrets that are somewhat usefull are small/large blasters against infantry and railguns are basically the best AV weapon in the game (though it can be quite hard to shot LAV's from distance). Missiles where good before CCP nerfed them into a paper pellet gun (they work somehwat decent against vehicles still). And small railguns have allways beeing the worst turret out of all 3 alternatives cause they have reduced damage against vehicles for some magical reason. In my honest opinion CCP should finally add laser, artillery and autocannons to the game. Even if they are broken who cares? Its a beta and we are here to test them and let the devs know how to fix them. |

Vehicular laser turret - mmm.
I speculate that the small ones on board NOT to suffer from platforms movement. Because of that they've got the potential to be superior to most other small turrets. So, CCP, care when implementing! |

As an amarr waiting for Amarr aircraft, I fully support this.
WTB lasers and small drone bay. And a ship that doesn't look like a joke. (What Amarr does best) |
