What works best against snipers, armour or shield? Ok, moving fast and staying in cover is best, but its really annoying when you take our your best tanked suit, and a sniper takes you out with one shot, and i can't even find the damn sniper he's like 5 miles away in the hills deep behind the red line. Usually I get some clue where they are, then I go and do them over.
Just wondering if a special anti sniper armour should play a part in this game. Maybe its called "High Velocity Kevlar Armour", and takes a huge chunk out of sniper damage. The downside is it would be quite hard to fit, or be very heavy and slow you down, or some other major compromise you have to make to fit it. |

BTW, thats a proto Assault suit I'm talking. Sniper kept taking me out with one shot from who knows where. |

you might try lowering your signature profile to lessen the likelihood of being seen without the scope.
using starter jeeps to cross large open areas or known gauntlets is another good idea, but make sure that the turrets hav been taken out first.
pay close attention to your UI, it isnt much but knowing the direction you got hit from helps in calculating the snipers position and field of view.
snipers are a kitten, but they can help in locking down a team, and increasing stress and anger levels, both of which impair clear thought...basically a sniper is like an inverse Heavy... where knowing where the heavy is can create stress around that locality, not knowing where the sniper is tends to create stress.
ergo.. the final tactic to combating snipers, is to not get angry, flustered or impulsive. |

what protection are you running on your expensive proto assault suit? if you are running less than 700hp in protection, it's your own fault. i'm not criticizing, i'm just saying...i run a type II assault suit with 607hp (302 shields and 305 armor) and can survive at least 1 sniper hit if not 2 (if i am at full health) depending on what kind it is. i've taken 2 hits, hid, let my shield recharge and have taken 3-4 that way before too.
i've always felt that balance is best between shields and armor. that way you are protected evenly against all weapons. my class B assault suit last build had like 785hp. i had 2 complex shield extenders, an enhanced shield recharger, and 2 complex armor plates. when i go proto this time, the load out will be similar but with a armor reper and another shield extender (whatever i can fit with the remaining cpu and pg), so i'm probably looking at over 800hp of protection. doubt i'll get 1 OHK'd in that.

To answer the actual question, Sniper Rifles deal approximately equal damage against both armour and shields, but because your shields will be taking the hits first, and are more likely to have regen capabilities, they're probably the best option to tank as a countermeasure against snipers. Additionally, Armour Plates reduce your speed, which makes you an easier target for the Sniper and reduces the value of the extra HP. |

If you get hit in the head, you are dead. It doesn't matter that you are using prototype assault with n+1 shields and armor. |

With Field Mechanics above level 3, and two Militia Shield Extenders on a Militia Assault, you can survive a headshot from someone using the un-modded Assault - Sniper fitting without Sniper Rifle Proficiency trained. You'll actually have some HP left if they replaced their Damage Mod with something else, or if you buffed Shield Boost Systems high enough to unlock Shield Control and put a few points into that as well. |

This is the primary option against snipers. If nobody else is performing counter-sniper operations then you do it yourself. It's not hard to put a few levels into sniper rifle. You can also use forge guns if you are primarily a heavy. Switch suits and kill them a few times and they'll find a less optimal position and stop being such a pain in the kitten.
If you try and tank against head shots you lose mobility. Best just to stay on the move and hunt them back if they become annoying.

On question: dual tank to just have enough buffer. Plates and rep, shield extenders.
On topic: best protection is to deploy with vehicles and drop uplinks. When in built environment, sniper cover is everywhere. |

That's what I thought, because I usually take a hit in a Type-A suit, and have enough health left to duck out of sight or run for cover. This guy was just nowhere to be seen, so must have been shooting from a real distance, I don't do much sniping is it hard to get a head shot from the other side of the map?
Just upgraded to the Proto suit, and I need to spend somet ime getting the fitting right I guess, only about 450 total HP at the moment. Still, thats 2 complex shield extenders, had far less on my Type-A. |

What do you think of the idea of sniper specific armour, or other protection, that comes with drawbacks of course. Worth pursuing or a waste of time? |

Svarta Solis wrote:What do you think of the idea of sniper specific armour, or other protection, that comes with drawbacks of course. Worth pursuing or a waste of time? Needs a lore-based reason. The current Sniper Rifles in DUST use Railgun technology, which means they're classed as "hybrid" weapons*. As such, they're effective against both shields and armour. Why would this new type of defense have an advantage specifically against Sniper Rifles without also giving protection against Forge Guns (also Railgun tech), tank-mounted Railguns and Assault Rifles (which are Blasters, but come under the same heading of hybrid weaponry)
*NOTE: The "hybrid" designation is because they combine elements of both "kinetic" (anti-armour) and "energy" (anti-shield) weapons. |

I think waste of time. Sniper is designed to OHK a person, it's why they exist. In real life, adding armor to defend against a sniper is poor implimentation. Higher ups ordered this in Iraq for turret gunners on Humvee. Suddenly the guy is adding in 40lbs of kevlar, then moving to a freaking bomb suit. Great for small arms/rifles, only now mobility is gone. Blown vehicle and they turned into a turtle trying to get away.
As stated originally, move through cover and don't be dumb is your best defense. Otherwise a sniper gets his reward for being good by dropping you. |
