As a "proud" member of the newberries, I have been on the receiving end of numerous kickings, mostly by opponents on foot. Obviously this makes me reluctant to start using anything which is particularly costly, as in many cases I don't have the skill to back it up, but I can still get a lucky kill or drop an uplink with starter gear/minimal outlay. However, in several games recently the opposing team has deemed it necessary to call in tanks to defeat our mighty team of 0/XX K/D players.
I initially rolled Artificer, so unlike those who rolled heavy, I don't have a free forge gun. I tried a few times with Starter kit which has a swarm launcher, but the tank was able to dodge or absorb the hits more quickly than one person could keep firing. One attempt with the laser rifle allowed me to completely deplete the tanks shields, at which point I was killed and returned to find the tank in the same spot untouched by any of the team.
Acknowledging that a tank should be more powerful than a single player and teamwork should be required to take one down, which may or may not happen depending on team, what weapons/fittings would you recommend to deal with them with minimal outlay as the likelihood is that I will die quickly? Taking down a tank solo is pretty tough...especially as a new player with limited skills/equipment. Bojo's comment on the explosives thread is similar to the only way I've had any AV success on my own. Pick up the first rank of explosives so you can fit remote explosives. You can then fit them on the starter AV fitting you get for free. The goal is then to goad an enemy tank into rolling over your REs. Even then a kitted out standard tank will probably survive (although hurt badly). A militia tank however will pop every time.
Alternatively, you can place the explosives near a choke point with overwatch and wait for the tank to roll through. Once you've dented him with the explosives you can try finishing him with the swarm. |

Well fitted and driven tanks are group efforts to take down, my only successful solos against good tanks were by those who camped spawn points and I would just appear, throw AV grenades, die, and repeat till he realized what was happening (by then it was too late lol).
But if you really wanna be someone that can solo tanks you kinda need to spec into it. If you don't feel like doing that just up your Grenadier skill till you can get Packed AV grenades and use those instead of locus. Vehicle drivers HATE packed AV's! |

You're a logi? Then I know the perfect thing for you- remote explosives or proximity mines. They're both cheap and easy to skill into (demolitions I for the explosives, II for the mines), fit in your equipment slot, and can do a decent chunk of damage. However, they both take a decent amount of prediction to use, and have their strengths and weaknesses.
Remote explosives- They're harder for tanks to detect, can still be detonated while you're bleeding out, can be used as anti-infantry, and can also be used to guard an objective. However, you need to manually trigger them.
Proxy mines- Automatically explode when a vehicle (but not infantry) gets in range. unfortunately, enemy drivers hear a beeping noise when they get near them. If I can react in time to avoid them with my LAV, I'm sure a tanker would have no problem avoiding them. But that also makes them a mental roadblock for tankers. |

Tank can just shoot them.
Or, drive over them lol. I had some logi dude running around my tank earlier dropping REs and Prox mines, I just drove around, took a couple of shots, then just stopped and lol'd.
Although I did have to move away eventually. Some guy with swarms came and there was some noob ex-tank driver who brought out a forge lol.
Proto Proximity mines and REs might do enough damage. If you're a tank and expecting it, you might as well be using a light weapon like a mass driver or something.
> Yes, it was a shield tank, but armor tanks have two hardeners on 80% of the time and one hardener on 20% of the time, more HP than shield, and so even though it's explosive damage it still takes out a smaller percentage of its total HP. Lame, right? You would have thought that explosives would be better on armor, and worse on shield in almost every scenario. |

For a cheap/disposable AV kit, nothing is really going to take down a decent tank, but this will filter out the scrub-boxes. |

If you're running a Logi, I personally find AV grenades (I only run the rank one AV's) and a nanohive can do wonders. I park myself on something higher than the tank or with a lip in front of me, drop the nanohive and then just start lobbing, I've chewed through the shields and armor of some pretty expensive tank fits pretty quickly.
If you have a Logi Sver Suit BPO it'll save you a bunch of money. I can't always kill the tanks, but I do run them off quite frequently with this tactic. |

Tank users in Ambush should go die in a fire.
I'm a Logibro and I usually have a Mass Driver with Flux Grenade and Nanite, Nano, and Drop Links in the Equipment slots, so the best I can do is drop a Link/Nanos in a suitable place, throw some Flux Grenades, and SLOWLY chip with the Mass Driver, making sure the shields don't come back up. If I'm at a choke point, I may use REs and Packed AVs if I end up dying with a Drop link near. If I'm not paired with a decent team though, I don't even try, just get the hell out of dodge. |

Thanks guys for the swift replies. Sounds like it's time to start looking into REs and AV grenades.
On that subject, I seem to recall reading something suggesting proxy mines disappear on death, does this mean that REs remain after death, or just that it was expected proxy would stay active?

I'm not entirely sure about proxy mines, but I do know that REs will stay active for a very short period after death. I've been caught a couple of times right after I planted one at a letter. As soon as I respawned, I triggered it and took out the guy that just got me who was then trying to hack the terminal.
I'm not sure how long they last after respawn, but it's a pretty sweet revenge kill when you get the opportunity... |
