I am just curious how other players think about this: So this is a Beta, and we can pay Aurum, so real money. I know nobody forces you to use it but if I look around in Pub matches I see alot of Protos right now. So even if we are not really forced to use aurum, if newer players (like me) want to be competitive with those guys from the closed beta, or being competitive in general right now we nearly have to pay aurum. Because I guess no player likes to start in a game where he instantly loses unless he spents a lot of time and frustration in it.
I mostly use Arurum right now to skill my sideskills because I am not quiet sure how CCP is going to implement the racial dropsuits. So I use aurum to get the protos to stay competetive.
So, what do you guys think about this right now. IMO I think a Beta should be free. For sure the strategies work, but that doesn't mean this is a nice way of earning money for CCP |

Don't need to pay any Aurum to contend, just do what most people do on here and spam shotgun classes. |

Playing logi BPO and i can go positive in many match. AUR is good only for BPO. You should bulid up your passive skill first. |

Save your aurum for boosters which in the long run are actually going to give you an advantage.
I use aurum gear only for special occasions. If you concentrate on learning the core mechanics of the game, and get a god feel for normal ISK weapon, Aurum items will actually feel more valuable when you use them rather than just burning through them in pub matches.
Grind your way up using ISK. When you get comfortable fool around with some Aurum stuff when you think its necessary. Your K/D may take a beating for the time being but at least you won't be wasting money.
All those proto Aurum fits you see? Looks better than it actually is. You need the passive skills and modules to effectivly back them. I'm killing Aurum protos all day with cheap fits. |

Only thing the AUR Pay To Get Ahead suits are good for is looking sexy in the war barge.
As H4lfdog has stated above, I run my Type I Sever BPO Logi suit and come in top four in 90% of my games.

Edit: What the guy above me said is true. Type I BPOs are great, and if you get a few modules/equipment/weapons you know you will use a lot, you can save up ISK for better fits.
Now this is a really useful advice, thank you very much for this.

I play maybe 5 matches a week on average - way behind the guys who play nightly.
I don't have any protosuits - highest suit skill is assault level 2.
I haven't used aurum for anything. I don't feel like I need to use it to keep up.
Just don't stand toe to toe with someone else, be strategic. Play with your fittings to maximize and specialize. Don't try to do too many things at once. Run with the pack. You'll do fine. |

Dust and Eve are tied and will be joined soon. The amount of Isk in Eve is astronomical to what is in Dust.
On that point, there is no reason for saving Isk and using BPOs. You're just keeping the match reward low. As everyone spends more on fittings, the rewards will get bigger and compensate properly. As you might have seen, with influx of Aur proto suits in matches.
You should be aiming for little to no Isk gain for the night/week. Else, you unnecessarily handicapped yourself. You're a Merc, they only use Isk for gear. There is no saving for retirement home... ( yes, i have reserve for unknown) The goal is to win/kill/get top war points.
Only reason for BPO is because you want no skin in the game, and don't think you will improve/give it your all. Why not play better by forcing yourself not to die wastefully...
Aurum for Augments only. For Corp fights, best in slot weapons, equipment is usually Aurum only. Right now. So, you'll need it for that too.
Learn to play with expensive fittings, not throw away ones...
Unless getting Isk makes you happy. But I'm telling you, you will get crushed when Eve attaches to Dust.
You might be saving now, but my lvl 2 assault suit was able to eat a grenade with shield only weeks ago.... Wait for real players. |

Wait for real players. my post was directed at AUR items like the proto suits and AUR weapons which are one use items you pay for with real money and rarely last a match, and since the majority of my isk goes on dropships a couple of bpo's for my dropsuits are really useful for keeping my costs down. |

I agree, I use the free Merc SMG BPO as that's all my suit has CPU/power leftover for. Was just trying to add in, that the Aurum BPOs are absolute waste. For multiple reasons. |

I die more to mass of fire from an organised squad more than solo proto users. With the sole exception of snipers. |
