When I see these posts though the first thing that runs through my head is that one guy who's running around by himself ignoring objectives just to get his K/D up. Sure, he's racking up kills, but the rest of his team is trying to work as a team to complete objectives. Sure PUG's can suck, but if you're not part of the team, then you're part of the problem. Often, that guy who's "not part of the team" running around by himself is taking out a squad of enemies behind the lines and timing it so that your squad of noobs who are working together only have one guy left to deal with when they reach A, and you can gun him down 4 vs. 1 thanks to the K/D obsessed guy who killed the other 3 guys who would have presented much more of a challenge.
Even if you're not directly working WITH the team, you can be working FOR the team.
My girlfriend is a pretty good Sniper, and I've seen her hold 3 points ALONE against multiple hack attempts from groups of up to 3 opponents in matches where she runs 15+ for a maximum of 3 deaths. She didn't stick with the team. She didn't work with anyone else on the team. She was the only one taking advantage of those two Nanohives she had in the couple of Sniper perches she was occasionally bouncing between to cover the whole area she wanted to control. Would you call that a liability?
I run a Shotgun Scout, and I often duck behind enemy lines, NOT to hack, but to clear enemies away from the objective as my team is making a push. Sometimes I rush at a particularly well-defended objective and get 3 to 5 kills before going down, because I know where the enemies are looking, and where they're GOING to look when I open fire. I know where NOT to be at that point, and I can sometimes anticipate well enough to clear the area and start to hack the objective alone. But of course, by then, there are reinforcements, and I die (3-1 K/D isn't bad though, right?). So that got me killed, but guess what? It ALSO meant that 3 - 5 enemies were waiting to respawn and everyone else was rushing over to E while my teammates are showing up at a now-undefended point C across the other side of the map. Oops.
Yeah, I sometimes stack my K/D and try to make myself look good. But I also spend entire matches without firing a shot (Repair Tool, Uplink, Nanohive. Depending on who I'm playing as and how seriously, pick a number from 1 to 3), and am still a benefit to my team. |
