So I looked around on the forum and I saw a few tank guides but I didn't find anything about this particular subject. when I first started I began putting SP into shield skills because I wanted to use Caldari tanks and railguns, but yesterday a friend was asking me about how to fit his Gallente tank and I found out something kinda frightening. I looked into the market to tell him the name of something and I saw that active armor hardeners reduce damage to armor by 25% (at least the equivalent to the shield hardener I was using did). At first I didn't think anything of it but then I saw the attributes that say they last for 60 seconds with a 15 second cooldown? The hardener I have on my Gunnlogi gives a 30% reduction but it only lasts for 10 seconds then I have to wait for another 30 before I can use it again, if the module was telling the truth that means armor tankers can have a 25% reduction to damage almost constantly. I could see giving armor tankers a hardener that lasts a little longer but only 5% more damage reduction in exchange for six times shorter duration and four times longer cooldown just don't seem like a good trade. The main reason this scares me is because I am afraid I just wasted all those skill points to get into Caldari tanks and use the better shield equipment. Especially if armor tanks are going to be the best anyway. Please someone tell me I didn't waste my SP =( . |

Both are viable. The downside to armor is micro management. The benefit to shields is less prevalence of shield AV specific weapons and increased speed. It does take you longer to recoup your damage though.
I prefer armor but think both can work. Shields could benefit from a slight buff.
Edit: You didn't waste SP. I have skills for both and use both. |

Thanks for the input, I guess shield skills aren't so bad, I can still use them for my dropsuits. However, I think I will just sideline my tanks and wait. I heard there's a patch that is supposed to addressing the dynamic between shield and armor tanks. |

Shields: 0% vs EM, 60% vs Explosive, 40% Kinetic, 20% Thermal.
Armour: 60% vs EM, 10% Explosive, 35% Kinetic, 35% Thermal.
Armour tanks hands down the best Battle tank pros to Armour tanks and tanking you can take more Dmg then shields and tank dmg longer with pro Armour tank you get a bonus to blasters DMG turning the sryu A living hell for anyone runing around in range of its blaster or any S.O.B. shield tank that gets to close .
cons of armour tanks your slow you turn like ToG 2 and the last thing you want to see coming at you can be used by anyone and everyone ! ... The SL and to add to the mines RE and AV nades work just as good.
sheilds pros fast turns good can add dmg mods with out killing your tanks def can add speed mods with out killing your tanks def can devote all slots to def and when hit fixs its self with out the need of a booster . puts destroyer in "tank destroyer" (aka TD) with speed and turning you can deploy o most anywhere on the battle field Fast and hit hard and run. hands down on most maps the best way to remove the other teams tank and not take a way from the teams fire power. with its speed it can get out of the way of AV and keep AV troops at a safe range. (PS: just love the rage its like a song) only real fear of a shield tank is a fougun
cons of shields takes dmg from 1 cm dips in the roads can take over 2000 dmg from running over a rock as big as a coin boosters will turn off if under fire from hi dmg harders say 10 sec only works for 7-8 secs takes skill to drive as some things the shield tanks only with shake when aiming or move when stopped on flat ground. OB are 90% will kill you ! LAVs Can kamikaze you to death EZ just get hit buy 4 under 30 secs only have 1 line of def thats shields and when thats done your done ! forgun max range and the range for railguns are o most the same....and they where made to kill just you ! |

Basically, CCP decided that Shield tanks are a tank for 10 seconds (if you use hardeners), then you're just a slightly more shielded and slower LAV. Not like standard LAV BPO Gurista Saga, that's got almost twice the shield regen as a Sagaris.
So not only is the hardener on shield tanks worse, but the booster (shield repair) is terrible when compared to the armor rep version on armor tanks. You can repair dmg to full quickly in a Surya/Madrugar, but it'll take a couple of cooldowns to rep your shield with a booster.
But there are some advantages to shield tanking. I like it, but once I finish my shield tanking points, I'm putting SP into armor tanks. Fortunately, large hybrid turrets include blasters AND railguns. That takes a lot of SP, but you'll be able to use it on any tank you can get right now. |

Shield Hardeners do need a buff tbh and passive regen on shields need to be looked at the guristas saga gets a decent amount and tbh a shield tank should get at least that or more |

back in the 1st build passive regen on shields where o most the same as in eve and o most no one could take them down... so ccp nerffed them to the point where shield tanks are only good for TD jobs and sniping . they where better then armor but that ended buy the 4th build |

not sayin make them too high and also have a delay on the regen time like dropsuits if u take dmg ur passive regen dont kick in for X secs |

in an LAV you are exposed to the elements and handle like a sack of crap.
the shield takes also leave their low slots open for damage modifiers, so they do more damage giving rise to glass canon on top of being speedy and getting out of danger in a heartbeat.
the armor tanks are meant to be blasters in the fray shield tanks are hit and run. of course shield tanks are probably going to get a huge boost soon. in the name of "balance" |

You can have a boost to shield tanks once we get a TRUE av weapon more effective against shield than armor (no, forgeguns don't deal more damage to shields they do the same damage to both armor and shields). |

Everybody loves to head shop Turret Gunners in LAVs.
This almost balances out their primary use as a flattening device.
