I'm sure you might have noticed those all those black dropsuits running around. I wanted to start a disscuion on the best way for newer players to engage an experianced merc weilding powerful proto gear. I'll start of with some things that have been effective for me, and hopfully some people can chime in with tactics and stratagys that have been effective for them. The goal of this post isn't to QQ but rather help newer players, so please no tears.
Ways to identify proto gear, and identify who is dangerous. - Proto Dropsuits: these are black and and the ones that have glowing orange eyes are purchased with AUR. - Watch the kills: keep track of names and what weapons they are using. This should indicate who is strong and what role they are playing. Try to learn the names of high grade gear so you have a better sense of what you are facing, and its general weaknesses. for example, if you keep seeing the same name getting lots of kills with lets say a boundless HMG, you should be able to deduce that there is a heavy out there with serious gear. That should tell you that you might want to switch to a fitting that allows you to deal with a heavy. This applies to vehicles aswell, if you see gunlogi you might want to bring AV gear that allows you to deal with a shield tanked HAV, or is you see madrugar you should bring AV gear that is effective against an armor tanked HAV. -Squads: you should identify if the opposing team has alot of squads or solo players. the best way to do this is check corp names in the player list, that should give you a general idea as to how many people might be in squads.
- Do not engage them alone!!!!: I cant stress this point enough. Most people who bring proto gear to a Pub match, will be in a squad and will be relying on team work to prevent dying and losing ISK or AUR. You should always assume they have a buddy there with them. Not only do they have a serious advatage over you as far as gear is concerned, but they most likely have back up. I can't tell you how many people I've seen run straight at a well fitted HAV, or a black dropsuit in the hopes of maybe killing them, only to be mowed down 1 by 1. This is decidedly a dumb thing to do. So, roll with your buddies, or if your solo turn on your mic and see if anyone wants to squad up. the best way to improve your odds is simple, having a larger organized group will negate thier gear advantage.
- Teamwork: similar to above this is very important. Teamwork and organization is one of the biggest advantages a merc can have. The best part you ask? Its the fact that teamwork costs 0 SP, and 0 isk, its free!!!! Again if your solo, go ahead turn your mic on, activate voice on team chat and ask if anyone has a mic or wants to squad up. Who knows you might find a buddy or a corp that you wanna join. Teamwork takes some practice, but the payoff is worth it.
- Flanking: Take your buddies and go around them. As a new merc you don't want to take them head on, they are not only more experianced, but have a gear advantage. try taking your group around them, and approaching them from behind, this should give you the element of surprise and an advantage. A quick tip on getting behind them unseen. Shooting and running will cuase you to show up on thier mini map. Great mercs pay attention, and might be ready for you.
- Identify weakness: once you get a better feel for the game you should have a good feel for what you need to do to deal with a specific type of enemy. For example i find that when I'm faced with multiple heavies i switch to a mass driver and flux grenades. Thats just what works for me against heavies. Or when faced with lots of assualts i'll switch to a laser rifle to deal with thier enhanced shields. This comes with exoeriance but you should keep it in mind as you learn the game.
- Terrain: Use the terrain to you advantage. Fire from cover. fire through small openings. get elevation, bottle necks and choke points, any minor advantage you can get, take it!
- Isolate them: Again these mercs will most likely be in a squad. If you can find a way to split them up do so. If you ctach them alone take advantage of it. Not the easeist thing to do, but it's doable. This is always situation specific, and there isn't any sure fire way to do this. Set traps, be patiant, try and stay 1 step ahead of them. If you can expliot a terrain feature do it. This isn't the easist part to put into words so i do apologize of this portion is lacking. What works for me is that I'm a mass driver user, i can let one guy through them prevent the next 3 from coming through by creating a kill zone that they cant move through, letting my squad pick off the solo guy. A heavy can occupy multiple people at once and do somthing similar, also the laser can kind of do this.
- Be Wicked Smart: Use your head, look at risk vs. reward, pay attention to whats happening. Sometimes you can just avoid them. If there is a tank squad crushing your team, but you can still win the match, it might be beneficial to just avoid it all together and go for the win. As tanks become more and more prevelent in ambush, I find myself ignoring them more and more. Instead of taking the main threat on you might be able to steal victory by picking off thier weaker players. You are also not wasting clones, on trying to fight somthing you have no business fighting. This applies to those pesky proto suits aswell. I'm not saying run away all the time, if you are at a clear disadvantage, gain advatage before engageing.
Please feel free to contribute and disscus, just remeber this is not a QQ, NO TEARS!!!!

Almost every player who is using proto gear in a pub match (to pub stomp) is terrible. You can easily use this to your advantage. You'll find that they are not able to:
> Strafe and aim > Use cover > Have situational awareness > Aim for the head > Watch their shield recharge
If you're able to do all of the above, you can destroy most Assault types in proto dropsuits using proto mods and proto weapons. I made a new character, and within two weeks of character creation I was able to solo the proto noobs. Get your weaponry up, get a type-II suit with shield mods, and get a GEK.
Most of the kills were extremely satisfying and rewarding. It might take you two grenades and two mags, but keep in mind that they are terrible players so you should be able to out play them. It is frustrating if they run to a group of other teammates because they are scared you'll drop their proto suit with type-II, but it's also funny when they run away like that lol.
There are also "moderately" skilled guys in proto suits. Those guys are harder to kill. You probably will need to get the jump on them or be able to use something else to your advantage. These guys aggravated me the most. You'll bring them down to no shield and less than 25% armor, but they'll still get the kill off just because they have waaaaaaaay better gear, and you'll be running low on ammo and/or reloading.
Many vets think they are good because they are "vets" and in proto gear. Go show them how wrong they are ^.^ |

Just wanted to add that identifying weapons is extremely easy in this game:
Standard - weapon name Assault Rifle, Burst Assault Rifle, Breach Scrambler Pistol etc...
Advanced - Numbers/letters followed by weapon name TT-3 Assault Scrambler Pistol, GEK-38 Assault Rifle, ELM-7 Laser Rifle etc...
Prototype - Name of manufacturer followed by weapon name Boundless Heavy Machine Gun, Viziam Laser Rifle, Ishukone Sniper Rifle
Officer - These are a bit more varied but are extremely rare in pub matches. They are easy to identify because they will have both a person/group's name followed by letters/numbers followed by the weapon name I can't remember any of the specific names since it's DT but you'll know them when you see them. |

I would sort of agree with this post but not all folks run proto in pubs just to stomp some of us like to test our gear before we corp mach it . When im out pub maching I tend not to pick on the malitia rambos as killing and aggrevating them isnt worth the irk reward I tend to go for squads that are at least standered or above as firstly its a better fight and secondly I like the chalange also I only run the proto when iv got at least 2 of my corpies with me . Pluss I never ever run anything above advanced in ambush as well its daft to throw away proto gear in ambush .

One officer wep is the balac assault rifle. Those do a lot of damage. Also, if you see a proto, I would try to take them on from midrange and under some cover. |

Ah yes the die hard proto rambos . Iv found tge best way to deal with them is a find supply depo for you and your squad and b all go proto . There nothing that says your solo proto ass is out mached than 2 proto assaults 1 proto logi and a proto heavy ( yours truly) turning up to hunt your ass down . |

In public games I'm finding that the proto suits are bursting like everyone else at the business end of a shotgun, so either blueberries are blowing cash on the Neos without knowing what to do with them, or people have skilled into them too early and aren't making full use of the suit's capabilities. Either way right now black suits in public games are nothing to worry about. |

When in doubt, use remote explosives and lure the protobear around a corner into some. Like heavies, they get cocky and don't realize they can be OHKed by equipment that is both easily affordable by anyone, and easy to skill into. |

Unless they are good (and hit detection is working... lol). But if they are good, you're kind of screwed anyways.
IMO you should do it without using a noob weapon, or not at all :D
And scrambler pistols can one-shot scout if skilled into them correctly. They require headshots, so it's not like it's a no-skill weapon either. People you kill will think scrambler pistols are OP, you are lucky, but if you repeatedly pwnface people with them, they'll know you have some FPS skills ^.^ |

This is now your new answer to everything @.@ lol.
You can also use a tank, NPC turret, or dropship to deal with proto suits too. LAVs are a bit harder because they can get destroyed with AV grenades.
Although, I have gotten some funny C4 kills myself lol. Sometimes I'd wish it were sticky, but I'd cry on forums like no other if Jihad Jeeps were brought into this game =/ |

Since all of Dust's weapons are hitscan apart from the Mass Driver, I'd argue the real noob weapon was the one that was moderately effective in nearly all scenarios but didn't excel at any, meaning the same bland strategy (point at enemy/tap button to make farting underwater noises until it dies) is employed no matter what the situation. |
