I'm sure you might have noticed those all those black dropsuits running around. I wanted to start a disscuion on the best way for newer players to engage an experianced merc weilding powerful proto gear. I'll start of with some things that have been effective for me, and hopfully some people can chime in with tactics and stratagys that have been effective for them. The goal of this post isn't to QQ but rather help newer players, so please no tears.
Ways to identify proto gear, and identify who is dangerous. - Proto Dropsuits: these are black and and the ones that have glowing orange eyes are purchased with AUR. - Watch the kills: keep track of names and what weapons they are using. This should indicate who is strong and what role they are playing. Try to learn the names of high grade gear so you have a better sense of what you are facing, and its general weaknesses. for example, if you keep seeing the same name getting lots of kills with lets say a boundless HMG, you should be able to deduce that there is a heavy out there with serious gear. That should tell you that you might want to switch to a fitting that allows you to deal with a heavy. This applies to vehicles aswell, if you see gunlogi you might want to bring AV gear that allows you to deal with a shield tanked HAV, or is you see madrugar you should bring AV gear that is effective against an armor tanked HAV. -Squads: you should identify if the opposing team has alot of squads or solo players. the best way to do this is check corp names in the player list, that should give you a general idea as to how many people might be in squads.
- Do not engage them alone!!!!: I cant stress this point enough. Most people who bring proto gear to a Pub match, will be in a squad and will be relying on team work to prevent dying and losing ISK or AUR. You should always assume they have a buddy there with them. Not only do they have a serious advatage over you as far as gear is concerned, but they most likely have back up. I can't tell you how many people I've seen run straight at a well fitted HAV, or a black dropsuit in the hopes of maybe killing them, only to be mowed down 1 by 1. This is decidedly a dumb thing to do. So, roll with your buddies, or if your solo turn on your mic and see if anyone wants to squad up. the best way to improve your odds is simple, having a larger organized group will negate thier gear advantage.
- Teamwork: similar to above this is very important. Teamwork and organization is one of the biggest advantages a merc can have. The best part you ask? Its the fact that teamwork costs 0 SP, and 0 isk, its free!!!! Again if your solo, go ahead turn your mic on, activate voice on team chat and ask if anyone has a mic or wants to squad up. Who knows you might find a buddy or a corp that you wanna join. Teamwork takes some practice, but the payoff is worth it.
- Flanking: Take your buddies and go around them. As a new merc you don't want to take them head on, they are not only more experianced, but have a gear advantage. try taking your group around them, and approaching them from behind, this should give you the element of surprise and an advantage. A quick tip on getting behind them unseen. Shooting and running will cuase you to show up on thier mini map. Great mercs pay attention, and might be ready for you.
- Identify weakness: once you get a better feel for the game you should have a good feel for what you need to do to deal with a specific type of enemy. For example i find that when I'm faced with multiple heavies i switch to a mass driver and flux grenades. Thats just what works for me against heavies. Or when faced with lots of assualts i'll switch to a laser rifle to deal with thier enhanced shields. This comes with exoeriance but you should keep it in mind as you learn the game.
- Terrain: Use the terrain to you advantage. Fire from cover. fire through small openings. get elevation, bottle necks and choke points, any minor advantage you can get, take it!
- Isolate them: Again these mercs will most likely be in a squad. If you can find a way to split them up do so. If you ctach them alone take advantage of it. Not the easeist thing to do, but it's doable. This is always situation specific, and there isn't any sure fire way to do this. Set traps, be patiant, try and stay 1 step ahead of them. If you can expliot a terrain feature do it. This isn't the easist part to put into words so i do apologize of this portion is lacking. What works for me is that I'm a mass driver user, i can let one guy through them prevent the next 3 from coming through by creating a kill zone that they cant move through, letting my squad pick off the solo guy. A heavy can occupy multiple people at once and do somthing similar, also the laser can kind of do this.
- Be Wicked Smart: Use your head, look at risk vs. reward, pay attention to whats happening. Sometimes you can just avoid them. If there is a tank squad crushing your team, but you can still win the match, it might be beneficial to just avoid it all together and go for the win. As tanks become more and more prevelent in ambush, I find myself ignoring them more and more. Instead of taking the main threat on you might be able to steal victory by picking off thier weaker players. You are also not wasting clones, on trying to fight somthing you have no business fighting. This applies to those pesky proto suits aswell. I'm not saying run away all the time, if you are at a clear disadvantage, gain advatage before engageing.
Please feel free to contribute and disscus, just remeber this is not a QQ, NO TEARS!!!!
