A matchmaking system only goes to segregate the community from the get go. A public game is just that - public game - where newbies get to occasionally face off against pro's. This is the community defining factor in pubs, and it has worked well since the days of quake.
Pro matchmaking: - pros get a more challenging environment - newbies don't get too unfair matches
Arguments against pros: - public, fw, nullsec is the natural progression of challenging environments. Want a hard fight? Corp vs corp, planet conquest. - public games are random, and will never be a fair environment. fairness is not a prime value in public games, and why should the redlined side have fun in the first place? Bad matches make the good ones stand out, all fun no loss is just bland.
Cons: - without facing pros, the newbies won't see even a glimpse of the full extent of dust - community lives and dies by the paragon players and corporations, who give newbies a focus of aspiration. When I started dust during Christmas, I was repeatedly pitted against SI, WTF and Imperfects who gave me a goal of the level I wanted to be. Names would pop out. I thought SI had snagged "Pro" as their corptag, since they would roll proto suits. Mingling the new and old community is crucial for it to develop. - matchmaking is a pointless step in joining games, a glitchy process in the first place. I bet the matchmaking system accounts for some time spent trying to get into games and failing.
IMHO, ditch matchmaking for public games. Its a segregating and pointless system, and dev time goes to waste on it. New Eden is not fair, deal wi |

I AGREE!! Think about it, how many times have you played a game and got killed with a crazy azz weapon and said "holy f@$%! i want that! with noobs facing eachother they'll have no idea what their skills are truely capable of. |

But if there only experience of playing is getting repeatedly stomped by vet corps they aren't going to stick around long enough to get as good as them. I personally think newbies should have access to a under 1 mil sp match list so they can learn the ropes, once they go over that then they can learn just how large the gap is and how much they have to do, that game list shouldn't be exclusive though, newbies should still have access to normal pubs if they want to jump straight in the deep end. |

Kind of agree, but don't think its worth the complexity or dev time. Less is more :) |
