Here we go...I'm more of an 80s guy even though I'm 25 and wasn't old enough to get that stuff back then. But I gotta say I'm a big fanof 1984 Dune fan and also big fan of Krull. What about you guys? I even had the tabletop dune game |

Aliens and Starship Troopers as far as action sci-fi goes. John Carpenter's The Thing was great too, and Dark City is up there as well. |

They don't make them like the 80s movies anymore, You quickly immersed into the movie and actually cared about the characters now these new movies are just about flash tech |

Right now REALLY diggin DREDD. Over-all tho, obviously Aliens & Starship Troopers (they should pretty much be training videos on being a Duster...), Total Recall(Arnold version....) & Predator; can't really go wrong with them two. Blade Runner OWNS...if you're watching the Director's Cut (scratch that, there's a Blade Runner version for EVERYONE ), ooooh & Outland is great as well (almost forgot about that one)....Star Wars 4-6 (of course), and last but not least, cuz I'm a DS pilot, can't stop watching the Chopper scene in Apacolypse Now (or any other Nam movie for that matter..) cuz I totally feel like I'm flying a "Huey of the Future" OOOOOOOH NEW FITTING NAME!!!!!!! |

i gotta add total recall, both of them, to my list that had starship troopers. also the terminator movies. demolition man, the star trek reboot, as well as 1st contact and the one where kirk was on trial. when i was a kid, back to the future 2 would be on the top of this list. also, if i can include certain comicbook movies on a scifi list, then the nolan batman films, x2, xmen 1st class, ironman superman/doomsday, batman red hood, superman/batman apocalypse |

if i can add tv shows, i'd have to say space above and beyond was pretty good. i wanted to watch a sci fi show that reminded me of mass effect, and this was one of the shows recommended to me among others. |

You guys seem to have covered all the obvious choices (even Zardoz!), so I'll just toss out a few of my favorite semi-obscurities8:
Hardware (1990) - Killer robot with a chainsaw wang and trippy lethal injections. Now on Blu Ray!
Nemesis (1993) - Killer cyborgs vs. killer robots with shotguns that shoot explosions. Also face-guns. Sadly OOP.
Class of 1999 (1990) - Killer robot substitute teachers vs. street hoodlums.
Beyond '90s killbots, I'm a big fan of Sunshine (2007), Outland (1981), The Apple** (1980), and Tarkovsky's sci-fi films, Stalker (1979) and Solaris (1972). (The 2002 remake isn't too shabby, either.)
Oh yeah, there is also I Come in Peace (1990) with Dolph Lundgren fighting extraterrestrial drug dealers.
* apologies for shamelessly promoting my long dead movie blog.
** drugs are not optional for this film. |
