so in this game we can make rail guns that fire huge blasts, laser rifles that actually have some sort of internal power supply that is smaller then a volkswagon bus, drop ships and tanks that are death dealing chunks of metal...
but we can't figure out how to make smoke grenades?
really?
those are outta our technological capability?
c'mon man.
make smoke grenades.

Smoke would totally make the snipers less aggravating, and the ridiculous amount of open space more manageable. |

Smoke grenades lasts longer, the regular ones just explodes for a sec, and albeit they are a distraction, they are hardly doing the same job smoke grenades could. |

Frame rate would end the game for alot of people.
But i agree smoke grenades could be really effective. |

It is worth noting that there was a testing item called a "Miasma Grenade" that came up in one of the DB dumps.
That suggests that they are working on something like a smoke or gas grenade, but that it is totally not ready for prime time. |

In a completely different vein, I could see an advanced version of Sticky Foam in a grenade.
Basically it could just explode into a solid mass that traps mercs, blocks line-of-sight, but allows bullets to pass through.
If if gets hit with explosives, it could just go poof and disappear. |

TACNET + Scanning negates any effect this would have. I can sit behind the burning fixtures on certain maps and snipe through the opaque smoke they emit because enemies light up when I pass my scope over them. It would be even less effective in a close quarters firefight since people are sprinting all over the place, waving their sights back and forth until they scan someone.
However, if you're suggesting that the smoke grenades would also create some kind of profile dampening field as well as just obscuring sight (cloud of radar scrambling nanites?), that would make sense. Perhaps higher level versions could even obscure OMS pods and vehicles (though I'm not sure what use that would be.) |

Actually, many modern military "smoke" grenades do exactly that. They contain chemicals that interfere with thermal imaging:

I would be very surprised if the New Eden versions didn't mess with TacNet. |
