I think it make more sense if there were mercenaries and soldiers from the Faction military. Because mercenaries are suppose to be like the few soldiers who are hired to fight in the military. As of right now, in this game, EVERYONE is mercenary and there are NO FACTION MILITARY SOLDIERS... This kinda doesn't make sense. So if the players can have a choice of being either a soldier who always fight for his faction out of his loyalty or a mercenary who just go after money :P it would be awesome |

It does make sense because unlike soldiers the only thing restricting our actions is ourselves |

When they sort FW in dust out, you will be able to fight for whoever you choose, if you want to help out your faction go ahead if you want to work for the highest bidder you can do that as well |

You can be a soldier right now. Just stop fighting for ISK and start fighting for your empire. Eve players do it too. They are technically freelancers and even mercenaries as well, but they can choose to act like loyalist soldiers.
It's called role playing. |

But we are still labeled "mercenaries" even if we fight for our faction though |

It doesn't matter. I'm a Gallente in Eve Online yet I signed up to be part of the Minmatar militia. Hell, my main ship for pvp is Minmatar. Labels don't stop me. |

^ This.
I'm Gallente myself, but my designs are a little more off the chart. For example I have a great distaste for the Amarr, and I would do everything in my power to bring down the Empire. Of course, as a mercenary, that means I can fight for anyone, but I'd choose to fight for the Caldari (even though we're bitter enemies) I'd fight for my own Gallente and I'd fight for the Minmatar. And since I don't like the Amarr, I'd never fight for them. |

The factions probably already have soldiers, we're just not them.
Being a soldier wouldn't work with our economic system where you have to buy and restock stuff since soldiers are provided their equipment by their government. This would also limit the choice of items available to them to standard issue stuff from that faction; for example, wouldn't make sense for an Amarr soldier to have possession of a Minmatar logistics suit or a Caldari sniper rifle since the Amarr doesn't make these things, or it might not even be allowed by the military. Corporations would not make sense for soldiers either since you're not fighting as part of a private business. picking where and when you go to battle wouldn't make sense either since you're told by your government when and where to go fight. |

Mercenary. Gun for Hire. Sellsword.
A person paid to wage battle on another person's behalf. That is literally ALL we do, so it is kinda apt. Even in faction warfare, you fight not just to fight, but to get paid for doing the fighting. |
