This is not true. I keep reading these threads over and over again and they fail, time after time.
There is a limit to the amount of advantage you can gain with SP investment over another player. A hard limit. When you reach it that is it. All done.
If you try to tell me that a player with 125 million SP has an absolute (instead of a relative) advantage over a player with 25 million sp invested in their character then you do not understand how the skill system works.
Each skill branch has an end. After you max out all of the skills that give you an advantage no matter what you are done. And everyone else can catch up.
All those who claim that DUST is an MMO and that is how it works in an MMO are also failing to comprehend the skill system.
DUST 514 is not structured like an MMO where each level of a skill that you gain makes your character more powerful. End of story.
In an MMO you typically have a class that you are locked into playing. Each time you level up you make that character in that one class more powerful. The leveling system starts at one and the developers keep adding higher levels so that players have a reason to keep playing and leveling up. DUST is not like that at all. There are no character classes. You can waste millions of SP just trying different stuff out and no one weapon or piece of equipment or vehicle, even when completely maxed out, is better than every other weapon, item or vehicle out there.
Basically what you are saying is that a player who has been playing for months and has skilled every possible skill to level 2 but not beyond has an advantage over a new player that went and looked up some suggestions on building a character and pushed a few levels to 4 or 5 and left everything else alone. And this just isn't the case. The new player with the level 4 or level 5 skills will have the skill point advantage in this hypothetical example.
Sure, Anyone who has been playing any game longer than a new player has an advantage. They have the advantage of having played the game longer. There is no way to take the advantage of experience out of gaming. Unless you want to give everyone a lobotomy every other week so we are all on equal footing every time we sit down to play a game of ambush. Though sometimes I think that has already happened.
Look, there are plenty of videos, posts, and guides already out there that will tell you how to put together a highly competitive fitting with just the starting SP. There are posts that detail how to put together a beastly militia tank that anyone can drive.
So in addition to the Skill system having a very definite plateau, beyond which you get more diversification but not more raw power, if you really spend your ISK wisely, you can get the better of players months ahead of you from day one. It isn't the SP that gives players an advantage. It is how they use it. It isn't the SP that gives vets an advantage, it is the experience playing the game.
Apologies If some of this was covered in the thread, but it needs to be repeated until it sinks in. Also, all of you well intentioned commenters that say something like "That is just Dust's MMO side." Could do with a little time to reflect on what you are claiming. You are accepting a flawed premise and just telling everyone to deal with it. Don't accept the flawed premise.
You can always "catch up" in Dust. You can start the game caught up.

Done. Some umm, interesting tangents. Not all posts on topic. I am glad you like the game so far.

Well, to put it bluntly: Ok. Prove it. One who makes a claim should be able to back it up.
Or, to be nice about it: Yes, it might seem like you get a huge advantage if you start before someone else in Dust, but it isn't anything to worry about. It is easy to catch up and be competitive. In fact you can start out with a competitive build on day 1. There is an example in the thread.
No matter what, if a new player invests time in the game they will catch up with the vet. Why? Because each area that you can skill into has only 5 levels. Not all skill branches will benefit you at all times.
For example, If you skill into heavy weapon rapid reload, that gives you absolutely no benefit when you are using a sniper rifle. |
