Due to a lack of notifications, text chat isn't very useful for communicating. A small notification to signal that someone typed something in a specific channel would be fine. Personally, I'd prefer a small pop-up window. An option to disable the notifications would be necessary, as would be an option to adjust how long the notification stays on the screen.
Here are some examples of what the notifications would look like. I made these examples back in May 2012 before I played the beta, so I didn't really know what to expect from the text chat channels and all that.

I don't think text chat while in battle is a good idea and there are notifications for text chat. The icons on the right side of your screen will flash when there is a text. |

Do you mean using text chat in the middle of battle isn't a good idea? Or having the notifications pop up like that isn't a good idea?
If it's the first, it's already a feature. It just happens to be not very useful because there isn't any kind of notification that someone typed something, so I could say something, but my teammate won't read it until much later when the intel is useless.
If it's the latter, I did say it would be optional.
Those icons on the right side of the screen aren't there when in-battle. |

I meant in the middle of battle. Typing a sentence while in a firefight will get you killed. |

It is better than not being able to communicate at all. Also, who would try to text chat while being fired at in close quarters? There are many times, however, when I am taking cover from a sniper who have been ravaging our team and I tell everyone where he is in the chats while taking fire from him. But, because there are no notification on the screen it is useless. BTW, you would be surprised at how fast you could text intel to teammates when using a keyboard or did you over look the fact that the game supports keyboard and mouse? |

+1 I agree with you. I would like a notification, or a banner on top of the screen that shows up and displays new messages; the banner should disappear after a few seconds. Disabling it should be possible as you said. |

I don't know this guy ^ , but I think you should trust his opinion on this subject. |

I didn't mean literally typing when you're shooting at each other. LoL
I'm talking about when I'm behind cover, of if I'm killed, or if I have a good view. I've used PSN text chats for communication in many games and it has been very helpful. The notification itself usually provides enough information at a glance.

Even a banner would be helpful! An option between a notification window and a banner would be great.

That costs extra money. [Until the PS4, which will supposedly have a mono headset bundled with it.] Hearing impaired. People playing without sound or with low volume.
It's not like implementing this would do any harm. |

Id like to have chat notifications, its hard enough trying to link up with my corp mates when some of us are in a match and some aren't. If we get a notification when someone says something then I can just drop match and get into a match with my corpies rather then people I don't know or like.

Another one who's in favour.
Needs to include colour-coding for the channel in which chat is happening, and preferably only in-battle chat notifications (or default to battle chat only, but with an option to turn it off or turn all channels on) |
