So I was bored and wanted to give myself a project So I decided to clean out my PS3 slim and replace the thermal heat sink paste.
And am I glad I did!
My ps3 was chock full of dust and the thermal paste that Sony put in the ps3 was both all dried cracked and worn out but also very poorly applied and of cheap quality!
So I followed this guide and now its running like a dream! Great success! Also I think it has helped with performance when the ps3 has been running for a while. Game play does seem a little bit more buttery smooth and the ps3 seems to handle dust and other games better.
Highly recommended!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hhx0XNVrD8
Be sure to find a guide that fits your model of ps3, also my ps3 was not that old about 2 years or less so be sure to check yours out especially if you always have it running and use it for everything! So if your ps3 is on the older side I suggest you consider giving it a once over!
Edit: I also used this guide for cleaning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgCI8myCnLI
Do it yourself only do it if you feel comfortable doing so after watching the video! There are people you can send it to online to to give it professional maintenance or places in your city that can/will do it. You can try cell phone repair places and the like. |

May need to give it a proper tune up to make sure it doesn't ka-put on me. |

I removed my HDD the other day and when I put it back in Sony felt I had tampered with it and asked me to format it. Bye content.

that's what happens when you buy a cheap product. the new PS3 is just so they can try to turn a profit on their system they been loosing money on ever sense they released it. using cheaper manufacturing methods and cheaper materials.
i had my fat PS3 worked on shortly after buying it because the thermal paste. 7 years later and it still going strong. |

My slim was bought when it first came out about 4 years ago? It's sounds like a pc tower, lol. Thanks, I'm definitely going to consider this. I don't see how I can **** it up with a great tutorial like that. Just need to buys the tools! |

Also, is it sad that I read "thermal heatsink paste" and was confused for quite a while, wondering when we added nanite paste from EVE Online into DUST 514? |

I didn't realize it was a fatty though... you have my deepest sympathy. Those fat beauties are too few and far between these days, they're a dying breed.

Before you recycle her, watch this video, it sounds gimmicky but it really works. I managed to save all my data, songs, pictures and my daughters Finding Nemo blu ray, that alone made it worth the effort. I only use my fatty for netflix and streaming and less strenuous tasks but I'm reconsidering the thermal paste just to have it safeguarded. |

Heads up, if you try opening up a Slim model CECH-30xxB, you need a T-8 Torx Tamper Resistant bit. Those are the Torx bits with little holes drilled in the center. OP's video shows opening a 20xx series Slim and they had plain Torx screws above the HDD.
I'm buying this set and waiting for it to arrive before I clean out my Slim. |

you can use a tiny flat head screwdriver if you want, its what I used and it worked just fine. |

I replaced thermal heatsink paste to nanite paste. PS3 start, say something: "Bzzzzz, 0110101110110001. Freedom to rouge drones!" and crawled through the open window.
Seriosly - not just replase paste, aslo i polished radiator to a mirror. Sto-ük radiator bottom - terrible, i can`t belive, that "it`s a sony". |

Also, is it sad that I read "thermal heatsink paste" and was confused for quite a while, wondering when we added nanite paste from EVE Online into DUST 514? Hold the DUST, I want nanite repair paste IRL! seriously though, if science started at the cellular size level instead of messing with buckyballs and single molecules, maybe we could get a little further along quicker... The 'bots would be simple genetic computers in a metallic housing, fitted with modular tools and sensors. the paste would be engineered for the material, with traces of the substance to repair. The first invention would be a manually applied paste with a magnetic inducer to power the 'bots. The 'bots would weld wherever they found the actual surface. They would use the entirety of the applied paste, welding it together, then remain in the base fluid which would be sticky enough to be mostly recovered for re-use. |
