There seems to be a lot of hate on this forum against Snipers. I'm hoping that this just comes from the known glitches and the admitedly imbalanced mechanics of the weapon itself, and not against the role (and the players) specifically. It's disheartening to have a successful couple of matches in Dust, feeling like I've supported/assisted my team to victory, only to hop on the forums and see a good portion of people complaining about me (Iknow they're not complaining about me specifically, but you get my meaning). Snipers are no good Kill Stealers, lazy campers, only care about their KDR, and are overall worthless on the game seems to be the general feel that I've been getting. This isn't new to me, it's the same in almost every FPS I've ever played that allowed sniping. But what sucks is; that's my preffered play style. Yes I can go Full Assault (which is my alternate build used to give that extra bit of help, when it's needed), but I find I get frustrated pretty quickly, so it's not as enjoyable for me. Other people find sniping to be boring, so to each their own. I think some, if not most, of the issues with snipers would be cleared up if we had something else to do besides just shoot people.
Now I'm not just talking about calling out enemy positions over comms, that's fine, but the only people who benefit from that are members of my own squad; the other blue dots on my team have absolutely no knowledge of the information that I can give, so as far as they're concerned, I'm still just a no good camper. I'm talking about the ability to "Tag" red dots that I see through my scope so that they appear on my ENTIRE TEAMS radar for, let's say, 15-20 seconds. That way everybody gets to benefit from a sniper performing his duties as overwatch. Players marking out enemies in this way should get a 10 point Team Assist award for every red dot your team members kill during this time frame. As it stands right now, it may seem that a lot of snipers only care about their own KDR, but that's because all we can really do is shoot people. I was in a game the other day (I don't really know the map names but I think it was Manus Peak), and saw a tank rolling up on some of team members defending Point C. They were blue dots, not on my squad, so I had no way to warn them of their approaching doom. This ability would help prevent such disasters in the future, though not entirely as it still requires palyers to be paying attention to their surroundings and radar screen.
Also, Kill Assists. I think that players should get Kill Assists as long as they've damaged the armor of the opponent. We've all taken chunks out of the enemy, only to have them run away for just long enough for the Kill Assist timer to run down. Then someone else on our team shoots them and we get nothing for it. This mechanic works in other FPS games because they (almost all) have auto regen. Dust does not, at least when it comes to armor. Yes there are Armor Rep Mods, and Nanohives that can do this, as well as Logi's doing their job, but I feel that as long as their armor is damaged everybody who has taken a peice that enemy should get a kill assist. If they get repaired back up to full, well, you have to start over anyway. A sniper could then start softening up enemies before they encounter his team, and still be rewarded.
Basically I feel that a sniper/overwatch, who is doing their job correctly, should be able to go an entire match 0/0 and still be earning WP's because of the assists they've been giving to their team. Then you'd be able tell who is actually doing their job, and who is camping or KDR hunting.
Anyway, that's my idea. Condone, or Codemn, as you see fit.
P.S. Sorry about the length of the post. I'm pretty tired, and I tend to ramble when I've been up all night. |

Snipers are your friends. I also feel for the hate that people give to Snipers..
Coming back to your point, the Active Scanner (which god knows when will be fixed) is something that you're looking for. This will solve the problem of the accusations on "red line" sniping; it gives the front line guys a sense that "okay, they should be spotting out the enemy for me..." instead of... "get your asses down here and fight."
If you manage to hit the cherry (no pun intended) you do gain points for when that cherry pops (I really need to stop this), but I do understand the timing issue with the kill assist point thingy...it can get annoying.
Side note: if they added a scope to the active scanner (granted that it will look differently) I believe that it would make it more "appealing" for players to grab one and stick it in their fittings.

Active Scanner. I'll keep my eye open for that, thanks. The only thing I've seen so far is the mod that increases your suits scan radius. Useful, but only for yourself, and not the rest of the team which is what I'm looking for. I know it sounds silly, but I'd really just like some kind of aknowledgement that I'm contibuting to the overall effort. I can understand other players frustration when they see that blue dot in the mountains, or on top of a building. It's not like they can really reap the rewards of his help. Even if the sniper is constantly calling out positions to his squad, the rest of the team will never know it. |

People don't appreciate snipers because they never know how many people they're NOT dealing with at any given moment. |

^That's kind of my point. This way people would be able to track how effective snipers are being in the match at any given moment. Just a quick look at the player list will tell Squad Leaders and Battlefield Commanders if their sniper/overwatch is doing anything more than just shooting at people. |

You can "tag" people. If you keep your reticule on an enemy, they'll appear on TACNET for everyone to see. Also you can't limit roles by gun alone, that's slightly unfair because it gives more features to users of that gun alone. Sure, if you have a Swarm Launcher nowadays, you could be classified as AV, but is someone with AV nades classified as AV? No. The purpose of a sniper rifle is for long range assassinations. But is that the only role it's restricted to? No. I've seen people get within AR range and use it well as a very damaging close support weapon. Also target painting has already been discussed and shouldn't be limited to sniper rifle users. |

Fair points, all. I guess I'm just feeling the need to prove that I'm doing something with all the "sniper hate" out there right now. Some extra WP's would be nice as an "atta boy". I use snipers mainly because they're the ones generally performing the overwatch duties, but I agree that anybody should be able to pitch in with the "tag-and-bag". I agree that no particular role is just one thing. Assaults with AV 'nades, Heavies with AR's, etc. That's one of the things I really like about this game. I'd like to have a more overwatch/support role than just sniper, but right now it feels like all I'm getting acknowledgement from is my KDR, which I agree with other posters isn't what my job is supposed to be about. Like I said in the OP, a good Overwatch/sniper should be able to go an entire match 0/0 and still come out positve on WP's for supporting his/her team, same as Logi's and dropship pilots (I say this as what these three should be doing, not what they might currently be doing). But I would like the ability to tag multiple people in a wider area (something that sounds like this Active Scanner I was told about can do). |

Nooooooo, don't bother using that thing as a sniper dude. That's a frontline tool. It's a hand-held equipment gear (I.e the equipment slot) which is like the Motion Tracker from the Alien franchise. Assuming it works (and it didn't) it only shoots out to like, 25-50 meters I think.
Even then it's got a certain unalterable scan precision that will only pick up certain players - Scouts who haven't gone into dropsuit command/scan dampening (which they most certainly have if they're using a scout suit) for instance. |

As a heavy Forge gunner i have to say snipers are a pain in the rear for me. im so slow running around, granted most are using militia sniper rifles which does't hurt me much (running around 1050 EHP). Still, they do tend to keep me pinned down in cover, sometimes to my detremint. Even more annoying when you have several snipers all shooting at you.
That being said, if i see a lot of my team getting killed by sniper fire ill switch up and get my Farsight sniper rifle and start anti sniping. Works wonders, most snipers dont look up. Kill enough of them, it settles down to a more bareable level.
Nothing wrong with snipers as it is, wether they are red lining or not. Talk to your snipers and have them anti snipe for a bit. Sometimes i can snipe them with my forge gun which is ironically funny to me. |
